thank you so much for the side-by-side comparison at the end. when i realized how different these two editions are i was really torn between them and couldn't find anyone comparing them. this really helped me decide to go with the second edition as i really prefer the detail in the artwork despite also appreciating some of the changes to the third edition.

Thank you for this extensive review. I love everything, even the background music which I can find very distracting. I’m interested in learning more about William Blake as my father loved his poetry. I also wish to explore using the tarot for writing, so am curious as to how it will read in that context and not for tarot readings, but to develop plots. I wish the changes of colour to the original artwork had been more subtle. I find some of the changes garish and much prefer the second edition. I may still purchase the 3rd edition as it is accessible, but if I can find a second edition at a reasonable price, I’d certainly consider that purchase first.

Wow! I like the 2nd addition moreso than the 3rd. The colors of the 2nd seem to “match” the concept of the deck more. I was drawn to this deck at NWTS and not sure why… I don’t have a lot of knowledge of William Blake or a personal connection. I did get a sense it would be good for journaling. Pretty cool review! Thanks!

Nice review, Dustin! Loved the music you chose for the flip-through! I have the indie version (2) of this, which came with a LWB but much thinner ~ does this third edition have expanded info about the paintings? I'd be interested to get the 3rd edition if it does ~ otherwise, I like the think cardstock of the indie version and have heard baaaaaaad things about Red Feather cardstock! People often comment that WB was kinda "out there," but I see his visions/philosophy as akin to the psychological side of Alchemy and as preceding some of Jung's observations about the collective unconscious. Thanks for your reviews, you always do such a thorough job!

Thank you Vada! The guidebook looks pretty much the same with a new introduction, and some minor corrections and edits. I rather like the card stock on this one, it has a wonderful finish and is nice and sturdy. I am a William Blake fan, having read his poetry back in the late '60s and early '70s in my wild youth. I need not explain to you the cultural importance of William Blake's radical spiritualism and visions to the psychedelic age. I'm planning to revisit his poetry now in my crone years. After seeing your video, I decided on the 2nd indie version. Incredibly, it only cost a fraction more than the MM version, including shipping from the author's US store to EU. I see the real value of the 3rd ed is in the guidebook though.

Ohhh - I had never seen the second edition before and I much prefer what little you showed of it. I bought the 3rd edition a few months back because of my particular use for Tarot as a creative writing tool and I studied Blake’s literature in college. I wanted to love this deck so much and just didn’t click with it - the images felt flattened and artificial to me, and not quite what I remembered his art to be - and now I understand why - so tucked it away with my decks that I keep but never use, for inclusion in a special project I want to do. Also there was one card - 10 of poetry? Or maybe it was the 10 that corresponds to the 10 of swords - that really hit me wrong. I’d have to go pull my deck out of storage to tell you which card but I dislike it viscerally. In any event this deck was mostly a miss for me. I didn’t realize until now that this was a collage deck so hats off to the creator for doing that well but collage decks are not my favorite thing and I usually won’t buy a deck if I realize it is collaged together. I mistakenly thought he was just choosing snips of Blake’s work intact. So there is another mark against it for me. I will keep it due to the special place Blake’s literature holds for me though.

I bought the 1995 Thorsons edition which Mary Greer edited when it was first released. The guidebook is really comprehensive being 166 pages in length. I have always loved Blake’s art and I would sing Jerusalem at the top of my lungs in Sunday school lol. The 7 of Painting is a collage of Jerusalem. However I found the deck inaccessible mainly because the artwork was so hard to see. I was so disappointed and it’s stayed in its box ever since. I’m absolutely delighted that this 3rd edition has been released with the brighter colouration. Excuse me whilst I clear my throat ready to sing …. Ahem ….. ‘and did those feet in ancient times, walk upon England’s mountains green”

The 3d edition has lost an atrocious amount of detail. They destroyed the art. I can not believe what I am seeing. To a collector like me, it is sacrilege. I am so glad you showed this. I will search for a 2nd edition, or not buy this one at all.

I think saying "They destroyed the art" is perhaps a little over the top and less than constructive. There is certainly an exchange of detail for more dramatic and contrasting color, which I supposed would have a wider mass market appeal. I do, however, still personally find the earlier editions more appealing.

@@ModernMetaphysicae I just received the new edition and will return it. I think the artwork in the new version no longer looks like Blake's artwork and is almost cartoonish. I do like the box and card stock better but its all about the art for me.

Hi Nicoll! Its mostly just formatting changes, the inclusion of the images of the cards in color, and a few additions describing the changes from the previous editions. Theres also may be a couple extra spreads I'll have to pull them out again and check, but nothing crazy different.
