What was the alternative a full on invasion by the British army we didn't have the arms to take them on head on they would have sent all of their forces here and massacred every Irish man woman and child it would have been worse then the Boer war concentration camps. Which only ended twenty years before the Irish war of independence ended. Trading space for time was the pragmatic move and we could have taken the north back if there was no civil war. The result is inevitable now we will reunify eventually it may take longer but there was no option other than signing the anglo Irish treaty.

The British government threatened to renew the war with the IRA if the Anglo-Irish Treaty of 1921 was not adopted. And in 1921, the IRA was at the end of its rope militarily although the British had yet to realize it. In obvious retrospect, the treaty's adoption by the Irish Dáil Éireann was the right and responsible thing to do, even if such an approval was clearly coerced. That said, I don't blame the republican (anti-treaty) faction for feeling betrayed, because the treaty recognized the division of Ireland as an accomplished fact. Still, the British evacuated Dublin and southern Ireland and that was a major accomplishment, even if many Irish citizens couldn't see it as such at the time.
@taintabird235 жыл бұрын
@Shane Gallagher That's a common myth Shane, in fact the Treaty afforded the Irish Free State considerably more freedom than was ever on offer with Home Rule, even before Redmond offered to water it down to appease unionists. As for Home Rule offering a greater prospect of a united Ireland - we could speculate that it might have - but it hard to find any evidence to support the it.
@johnroche75415 жыл бұрын
It is a myth that the IRA were on the ropes military at the time of the Truce. The worst period for British casualties was the last 10 weeks of the conflict. Even in the last 11 days of the conflict the British lost 27(16 policemen,10 soldiers and 1 Royal Marine). At the time of the Truce the IRA were better trained and experienced than the year before. On the morning of the Truce an IRA unit(80 or more men)was going to ambush a military convoy in Limerick using 8 landmines but the convoy arrived after 12 noon. A unit in Co. Kerry was going to ambush a military patrol again using landmines on the morning of the Truce but the patrol never showed up. If the conflict continued the IRA would have used IED'S more. The IRA in Cork captured a lot of explosives from Fastnet Lighthouse in June 1921 which would be used in the manufacture of IEDS. Have you read what Churchill said in the House of Commons defending the signing of the Treaty? He admitted that the IRA were not defeated and that engagements were getting bigger and British casualties were rising. It is a total myth that the IRA were on the ropes in the summer of 1921.
@taintabird235 жыл бұрын
@Shane Gallagher No, it offered quite a lot of new freedoms actually, including the right to raise its own taxes, set its own budgets, make its own laws and organise its own police force. None of these were available under Home Rule.
@taintabird235 жыл бұрын
@Shane Gallagher Actually, using historical facts.
@johnroche75415 жыл бұрын
@Shane Gallagher As I stated in my earlier text it is a myth that the IRA were on the ropes at the time of the Truce 1921. You have given a list of IRA ambushes with the figure of Crown Force dead. Another myth is the amount of Crown Force dead from some of these engagements. I have studied the Crown Force casualties from these engagements for over 20 years. My research consists of information from both Irish and U.K. sources. What fuelled my research was the conflicting figures for Crown Force casualties given by the IRA and British government. I would consider myself an expert on this subject as I can provide the name,rank and regiment for British Army dead which can be confirmed by the C.W.G.C. The death of every policeman in the conflict cam be found in Richard Abbotts excellent book"Police Casualties in Ireland 1919-1922. Military deaths in the conflict are my speciality. As I stated in my earlier text the firepower of the IRA units was improved with use of IED'S. Here are a few more examples that you might not have known about or maybe you did. The IRA used an IED against the Auxiliaries at the Clonfin Ambush in Co.Longford resulting in the deaths of 4 Auxiliaries. It could have been another Kilmichael. Sean McEoin was merciful to the survivors. If this happened in any of the of the Munster counties I don't think the Auxies would have got mercy. The Cork IRA used an IED against the band of the Hampshire Regiment at Youghal on 31st May 1921 resulting in the deaths of 7 soldiers and wounding 19. You are wrong when you state that 13 British soldiers were killed as a result of an ambush at Millstreet. This ambush is better known as the Rathcoole ambush and the IRA used several IED'S some of which did not detonate properly but some lorries were wrecked and 2 Auxies were killed.This took place in Co.Cork in June 1921. Another ambush that took place in June 1921 was the ambush of a troop train carrying soldiers and horses from the 10th Hussars. They were the King's escort when he opened the Parliament in N.Ireland. Again the IRA used an IED to derail the train. However the IRA exploded it under the wrong carriages but still it was derailed resulting in the deaths of 3 soldiers from the 10th Hussars and 1 guard(civilian) and the deaths of over 80 horses. The aftermath is captured by British Pathe. Check it out. If the IED had exploded under the troop carriages instead of the horse carriages imagine the death toll. This took place on24th June 1921 in Co. Armagh. In early July 1921 the Dublin IRA had planted an IED on some tracks waiting for a troop train carrying soldiers from the K.O.Y L.I. to stop when they would detonate it. Unfortunately an officer from the South Lancs. saw the command wire and prevented the explosion. On 3rd July in Co.Cork the IRA used an IED against a lorry carrying soldiers from the Cameron Highlanders but unfortunately the trigger man detonated the IED too late and wounded 3 soldiers. Also on 3rd July 1921 in Co.Waterford George Lennon was going to ambush soldiers from the East Kent's using IED'S but called off the operation as their position was in an area where the British were conducting a large sweep. By the way no British soldiers were killed at Durrow during March 1921. If the conflict continued the IRA would have used this tactic for the rest of the summer and an autumn campaign. The IRA would not need big units for this strategy. Look how successful this tactic has worked both in Iraq and Afghanistan in recent years. I find it so annoying when historians make sweeping comments that the IRA were on the ropes in the summer of 1921. In an interview in the 1970's Tom Barry maintained that the IRA and the people were never really tested. He states that if the British brought over another 70,000 troops the real test could begin. C

He wasn’t the best: *Pádraic Delaney,* as the agonised but lethally resolute, elder brother, was. Cillian Murphy and Liam Cunningham get all the praise because of Peaky Blinders and Game Of Thrones. But actually, a lot of the supporting cast gave the performance of their lives. The film wouldn’t have been half as good without them. But all that said, I agree about awards. It’s just that I don’t think Cillian Murphy should have been alone in getting one. But anyway, you needn’t hold your breath waiting for awards from the Anglo-Saxon film world for films about our war of independence. If it hadn’t been for French interest and support, this film would never have seen the light of day.

Where the hell do you think the money came from for that war. If Dev hadn't gone to America there was no war. Michael Collins sure enjoyed the high life with that money though. It's amazing how every mistake Dev makes is remembered by people, but Collins gets a free pass. Everything from missing money, to the wearing of a Generals's uniform, drinking and womanising while negotiating a treaty with the Brits. Let's not forget the signing of the treaty because it was the "best we could have got" zero consultation and then holding a referendum with the threat of war if you don't vote yes.

Honest answer, I don’t know. Were they going to win a war against Britain? Was radical socialism going to be embraced by the Irish people? I doubt it. The creation of the Irish Republic was an immense, though limited, accomplishment. It may be there is unification yet, and without the bloodshed.
@jedsithor Жыл бұрын
It's complicated. In the years following the civil war, successive governments gradually dismantled the treaty until Ireland became a republic, completely separate from the UK. However, the North remained under British occupation and rule (and still does) oppressing Irish Nationalist communities, colluding with Loyalists to do so, which resulted in the rise of a new version of the IRA and the Troubles while in the Republic, the Church had a stranglehold over the country, aided by whichever government was in power. In a sense, they're both right and that's the tragedy of it.

I don’t agree that “the IRA were at the end of their rope”, but what I would say is that time was not on their side. Think about it and you won’t be surprised at that. Britain, at that time, had the No.1 spot in world power that the USA holds now _ but their Empire’s resources were greatly stretched by WW1 (and the USA was catching up). The War Of Independence was perfectly timed *while it lasted* _ with other upheavals around the world making Britain anxious for a settlement. However, from the moment the Truce was agreed, the advantage moved slowly back towards the recovering, major world Power. Again, this should not be a surprise. The Treaty was far from ideal _ but *IF* Sinn Fein and the IRA had remained *united,* it would have been *very* difficult for the former colonial class and conservative parts of society to resist ongoing change. Before the split which led to the Civil War, Lloyd George was making speeches to the British Parliament, effectively preparing them to have to concede some of Northern Ireland’s territory. Of course he wasn’t doing this from the goodness of his heart _ it was how he saw the balance of forces and Britain’s options. Once the Civil War split came, all the pressure was off the British _ and also off the former colonial class here. Of course they took full advantage _ but they wouldn’t have been able to without the split. Some of the comments I’ve seen here against Collins, Griffith, and Mulcahy are despicable _ from anonymous keyboard cowards who’ve never risked their lives for anyone and never would. I speak as someone who has resisted all those who attack Dev and Brugha, as much as those who attack Collins and Griffith. And by the way, Fine Gael has *zero* right to call itself the party of Collins _ he would spit on them if he were alive. It’s true that *Cumann* na nGaedhal *started* as the pro-Treaty wing of Old Sinn Fein _ but what became Fine Gael was flooded with Southern Unionists, time-servers, opportunists, the richer and more conservative, and above all, the embittered elements who had been on course to dominate a Home Rule Ireland, and intended to climb back to power. As indeed they now have: while ye all pointlessly re-fight the Civil War on your keyboards, Fine Gael controls the best schools, businesses and the media. In or out of formal government, it runs the 26 Counties, despite *never* being voted an overall majority by the people. I don’t always agree with Mary Ellen Synon, but she wrote the finest words to throw in the teeth of anyone who wants to keep dishonouring their Civil War opponents: *”Were they flawed? _ yes. But were they heroes? _ YES. Deep in their Irish souls they looked at their people: mean, subjugated, and starving, and said: These People Are Worth Fighting For. And they did it. AND _ THEY _ WON. They were all heroes.....”* *”.... We are not heroes. But let us not be quislings either”.*

If you think Ireland was going to get a republic, 32 counties and complete independence from the British empire in 1921 you are a fool. Britain was weakened after WW1 but it still had the strength to start a total war with a old small colony. Mass imprisonments, concentration camps, Black and Tans tactics x1000, mass deportation and execution. The flying columns would have put up a terrible fight but they would eventually be run to the ground like game animals. Ireland would have gotten the treatment of the Boer and the war for independence would have been for nothing
@323guiltyspark2 жыл бұрын
In the end, Michael Collins turned out to be right. The treaty was a big step towards independence. Ironically, De Valera reaped the political rewards of the treaty when he and the Dail almost unilaterally declared an end to the Free State and the formation of the Republic in '37. All Britain could do was just sit there and watch. The implicit price of independence were the six counties, but if they kept fighting as they did in '21, there might still be Black & Tans marching around Cork.
