This I'd a major timesaver Phil, much appreciated! The only real way to improve it would be to rebuild the 98se iso to have installed all the updates. Not like nlite that tacks them on, but built right into the base installer. It wouldn't make sense to do that with any version of Windows that wasn't well and truly dead, but 98se definitely is, so… The major questions you have on install really are DX 7 or 9, etc.

Question: Why would you recommend DX7 over DX9? My own experience is that 9 is better to have than 7, though admittedly most of my 3D Windows gaming experience is from the early 2000s onward, so is 7 simply better for compatibility with anything made with DX7 or earlier, or is there more to it than that?
@philscomputerlab16 күн бұрын
Better for compatibility with DX5, 6 and 7 games. But it's not a big issue. Most games will work just fine but 7 will just work if you let's say have a Voodoo card and play suitable games.
@sakitoshi16 күн бұрын
previous DX versions are included, so there is no advantage. maybe an obscure game performs a little worse, but that is a big maybe and has not been demonstrated.
@Pixelmusement16 күн бұрын
@@sakitoshi That's not entirely correct, but close. I've done some looking up on this since commenting to see if I could find out the specifics: DX8 includes DX7 while DX9 includes DX8 and DX7. However, what gets complicated here is that if you have DX9 installed then DX6 games will actually run in DX8 mode while DX5 or earlier will run in DX7 mode, meaning there may be some highly specific cases where having an install of DX7 will be better for DX6 games specifically, but otherwise going between DX7 and DX9 shouldn't make a difference.

If you’re able to track down the “iWare mouse” driver, it’s what many mice manufacturers offered as a more customizable update package than the supplementary Microsoft software you featured for that scroll wheel functionality. Still makes me sad that they kind of axed the fantastic boot sounds that 95, 98, ME/2000, and XP had. I forget that they even have them anymore, but I still love the Win95/Win98/Win2k startup sounds despite hearing them way too many times over the years (I used Win2k I got for free from my Uncle's work until XP SP2 came out, blew my 6th grade graduation money on a copy of XP SP2, and felt kind of let down with how it felt like mostly Win2K with a new theme... that I switched back to classic and never turned back). To be fair, to the people confused by/annoyed at the number of reboots. Yes, they're annoying, but even decent hardware back then with a spinning rust hard drive would boot Win98SE from cold to desktop/login in no time at all. At my dad's office we ran 98SE on computers that came out nearly 10 years after Win2k launched on a closed network for an old database solution, and those minimum XP spec SFF PCs, even with spinning rust, would boot in seconds. Honestly, I wish we still had that setup, or Win2k/XP, instead of upgrading everything to Windows 7 and then 10/11. I'd pay to go back to those for the database (it works on new Windows... but like anything in a command prompt, it's jank at best to try and get "full screen" that they removed after XP) and just have a handful of old ThinkPads running openSUSE for them to use for web browsing/email/etc.

Some network cards cause this to make windows 98 se unbootable, except into safe mode. The 86box VM I was using for testing had a [ISA] 3com Etherlink II. These kind of projects are awesome, unfortunately they are usually English language only. Patches for other languages are much more rare so I usually only install the vanilla Windows 98SE, and then any language specific update that may be needed by a specific program and/or game.

I would prefer a German version, there are also very good inofficial patches out there.

Whatever disk imaging i'm using... I really don't have anything that old, any suggestions? Old Norton Ghost perhaps?

Plug the drive into a modern PC and image it there.

Have you ever made a guide on how to back up and restore and image on old systems like this?
@philscomputerlab16 күн бұрын
Not yet. I like to use removable media, so a USB card reader or USB SATA Adapter do the trick.

What is the significance of installing IE 5.5 instead of 6.0 on Windows 98? Is there something in IE 6.0 that isn't good for a Retro PC?

I should have counted the rebootss. That was a lot.

Hi Phil, es gibt auch eine automatisierte Windows ME Update Disk. Die wird bald sogar geupdatet. Vielleicht magst du dazu auch ein Video machen. :)
@micbr50816 күн бұрын
This 98 compilation is derived from the Windows Me version of the disc - I'm working on the next version of that CD now, and hopefully should have a release in hands of the public within a matter of days now. I'll reach out to Phil shortly if he's interested in giving it a run. The Internet Archive downtime has made the release a bit more difficult than I'd hoped - currently I still can't update the listing on there (WMEUPD-R2) as the archive is still in read-only mode, so I'm looking at other locations I can host the files as well. Once the IA comes out of read-only mode, I'll update the main listing as well.

@micbr508 Thanks a lot. I understand. Cool to see that you replied me.

@@micbr508 the master is here. Thank you for your Windows Me update disc. It inspired me to make the one for 98 SE and I couldn’t have done it without your work.

Can I use this on an existing installation that has some updates installed via Windows Update Restored? Or is it better to use this on a fresh installation?

Hey Phil, I have a question. How demanding was Thief 1 back in the day? I'm using a Radeon 7500 PCI and a Pentium 3 600MHz and it still runs slow no matter the resolution, like sub30 fps.
@philscomputerlab13 күн бұрын
@@nerdyneedsalife8315 I haven't played that game back in the day, but your CPU should be fine. Maybe it's the graphics card, but unless you have parts to swap and test, hard to say...
@nerdyneedsalife831513 күн бұрын
@philscomputerlab Okie dokie, thanks Phil, I thought that the 7500 would be a good card because it came later than the game and it's iust a 7200 with a smaller die. I wonder if I need something more era appropriate like a different ATI card or an Nvidia. I can't afford a Voodoo

@nerdyneedsalife8315 How do other games run? What year did Thief come out?
@nerdyneedsalife831513 күн бұрын
@@philscomputerlab Thief released in 1998. I will try some other games tonight but for games like Duke3D they ran fine which isn't surprising. I can maybe try Quake 2 and see if it's just Thief's engine being a demanding engine

Yes, unfortunately it's probably all just for the English version. I need something like that for the German version.
