The mention of Glamour Shots alone would've made me laugh, but I love that you have someone's that you could share! I remember when those were all the rage. I am glad you pointed out how strongly Lely homogenized these poor womens' appearances. (I think it is sad that they were so changed.) I did hunt for alternate portraits and it seems they still were fairly similar, but not nearly as look-alike as Lely painted.

Isn't that what makeup does, to homogenize one's features? Look at all the women who use botox, they get a similar look.
@lisakilmer26672 ай бұрын
@@mtngrl5859 Absolutely, yes. But this feels like photoshopping a group of women to all look like Kardashians, which is even worse (I think) than people voluntarily trying to look like Kardashians.
@mtngrl58592 ай бұрын
@@lisakilmer2667 About 25 years ago I was a guest at the home of an Earl and his Countess. They knew I was a fan of the Restoration period & gave me a tour of their art gallery. In this gallery were a couple of family members painted by Sir Peter Lely. While there were subtle differences btw the ladies, but the eyes were all similar, I remembered asking the Countess if I thought the family members looked like that or if it was more of a stylistic device. I'm not sure why it would be worse in your opinion, what is the difference btw an artist presenting a sitter in one way or a complete industry trying to create a false image of femininity? Throughout history, the majority of women have complied to some beauty standard to "fit" in or be desirable. There were women during the restoration period who didn't go to court or try to win the King's favor. There were accomplished women like Margaret Cavendish, Duchess of Newcastle who was a scientist, philosopher, playwright who was held in high esteem by the King.
@lisakilmer26672 ай бұрын
@@mtngrl5859 I definitely rebel against the fashion industry (I will never fit the "correct" mold). But I think there is a difference between wearing the correct stays for a modish silhouette and having somebody else's eyes put on my face in a portrait. All the "beauties" are wearing the exact same hairstyle, fine. But to have their faces altered to look like sisters seems so insulting. It says, loudly, "you're not okay unless you look like ABC (the original woman)" - and that is very like the current pressure to imitate the fake Kardashian look, even to use plastic surgery.

The ladies that turned down Charles II and James II, whether the kings fully respected their answer or continued to try to seduce them, at least sounded like they were happier than Anne Boleyn. These ladies didn't lose their heads.

Charles ll was a far more tolerant monarch than Henry Vllll. He didn't obsess on an heir like Henry did, but he also had the advantage of knowing that a female monarch like Elizabeth l could effectively rule the country. Also, his brother had heirs, so he felt secured knowing the Stuart line would continue.

I don’t think it’s prudish to dislike adultery, that’s just having good morality. The problem is the Victorians hypocrisy. Despite their desire to seem morally superior, adultery was still extremely common in nearly every major Victorian royal court. It’s was also common for everyday people which is why syphilis rates were sky high during the Victorian era.

Apparently after the Restoration, Charles II wanted a symbol of Britain. He decided to adapt the Roman goddess Minerva, herself from the Greek Athena, goddess of wisdom and the martial arts. The model was Barbara, Lady Castlemaine, Charles' current mistress. The result was called Britannia!!! So, that's how the symbol of Britain came into being.
