@beo74 Me too, always something new happening with this show that you can connect the dots with afterwards but never thought of it in the beginning. Miss this age of HBO. Don't really get into what they put out now. Some is ok, but just ok. Sopranos, The Wire, Deadwood, Band of Brothers, The Pacific (though not as good as BoB), but quite good. Even Entourage a bit, but just a bit. The first four are icons of television and I seriously doubt we will ever see series as good as these for a good while if ever. I think 2 shows came close, 1) I really liked City on a Hill on Showtime, but didn't get to finish the last season, and they took it completely off the platform before I could. Sooo disappointing. Kind of had The Wire feel a bit. Kevin Bacon was astounding as a scumbag FBI agent. Mindhunters on Netflix was great too, and as usual..gets cancelled. Is it just me or does Netflix not have a clue anymore? I would kill for more Mindhunters and more actually done well Altered Carbon. AC season 1 was astounding, season 2 was very Meh. Yet I thought both seasons of MHs were great and had a great deal to build on.

Good on you to recognize that there’s more depth and layers with the second season. You can expect more of that. That’s what’s so great with The Wire: they tell new interesting stories with old and new characters while adding more layers to what’s there in terms of how it all is connected (all the pieces matter). The drugs, the drug crews, the addicts and citizens, the suppliers, the police, politicians, the game overall and… well, more to come. :-)

After viewing season two I was surprised and impressed at how high the creators had set the bar and although never disappointed by subsequent seasons I came to expect that standard and was not as startled as they continued to hit that high mark. @@yetisburgeadress oh I loved Treme. Even Davis, who I know a lot of people find as annoying as Ziggy. I already knew and liked some of the music in it, but the performances in the show are fun. I don't think there was a character story I disliked, but I particularly enjoyed Creighton and Toni Burnette, Sonny, Big Chief Lambreaux, Jeanette Desautel, and Antoine of course. A lot of those characters have serious character flaws but I guess they are very willful characters and free spirits. Sonny is a bit of an outlier I suppose but I enjoy his arc and growth. Like The Wire, I like how the city itself is a main character. There's a tremendous sense of place. They don't shy away from the bad aspects and although the writers have their own political opinions which do shape the story a bit they treat the viewer intelligently and it never descends into propaganda.

"The Greek" could be Turkish but I think not due to how he interacted with the Turkish guy from the container ship. He could be Cypriot, or even Italian (there's a Greek speaking area in the south of Italy). He really could be from many different places around the Levant. His organisation contains an Israeli and a Greek, and a Ukrainian. The Ukrainian is a bit atypical in the group, though. Naturally his exact place of origin is deliberately vague, so it may be that the writers didn't actually have anywhere particular in mind.

I got two theories on the nationality of the greek: A: He is actually greek, and him saying "I'm not even greek" is in reference to the fake passports they use to travel for business B: He is from Cyprus. He refers to a turkish man as his patriot early in the season, which would be bizarre for an actual greek to say. Cyprus is essentially divided into two halves, one ethnically greek, and the other is ethnically turkish. So he would still have greek roots, but it would make sense why he called the turk his patriot while also explaining the "I'm not even greek" line

I hated season 2 on the first watch, as you said. Because season 1 was about the people in the housing project. Season 2 felt like it got away from the street. Which it did. It was about organized labor and the plight of the working poor. I was kinda bored and wanted it to just get back to the low rises. Every episode not with Barksdale people or Omar i wanted to fast forward. And at that time i wasn't clear that the show was showing the varying institutions of the city. In hindsight I love season 2. I think it's great. Not my favorite but I totally enjoy it now. It take it as adding depth rather than ignoring other characters. I loved one and the later seasons but now that i've watched The Wire more than 3 times i love season 2. Brother Mouzhone is my favorite new character hands down.
@alexmckee4683 Жыл бұрын
Brother seems like a cartoon character to me. Unrealistic. I get having a Nation of Islam type character, that does make sense, and it's cool to have some diversity in the Black stories they tell. But he's totally unrealistic in my view. Cheese's guys could have killed him if they had had their weapons ready. That kind of attitude'd get you dead real quick. He's also supposed to be a legendary "soldier" but all we see is one minor altercation that could have gone either way. Then Omar sets up on him and defeats his security trivially. Unlike Omar where season 1 shows us that Omar is a fearless stick-up artist with solid tactical skills, we're repeatedly told how serious a threat Brother is but we don't really get to see it. Unless they were deliberately trying to subvert that trope, I think the Brother character is one of the weaker aspects of The Wire.
