It's about how all this affects the family more than about the witch itself. Take a couple of scenes out and this could have been just a well made tragic family drama set in the 1600's about how superstition and the belief in witches destroys a family who has some very bad luck. But in this case there actually is a witch. And Black Phillip really is the devil:) I love this film, but i understand it's not for everyone.

Next you must see Robert Eggers "the Lighthouse" it's another take on peirod peace stories this time about lighthouse, it's maybe not scary but very symbolic and artistic cinema! He went up in my opinion quite much UP in this movie from the VVitch ;) but the atmosphere is dense and exelent preformance of Willem Dafoe and Robert Pattinson! A must see!

I still say that it's an unfair prejudice against goats - not in this film but the association of goats with the devil. They're not the only animal with hooves or horns you know

People rarely catch it, but the baby that was stolen was Thomasin's, and was the reason for the family being exiled from the community because of her "sinfulness," (having a baby out of wedlock.) And then you have the rest of the family and their sins. The father with his pride and lying. The mother with her greed. Caleb with his lust. And the twins with their sloth.

Another thing people can miss is the shots of the mould on the corn, it's thought this mould, called Ergot, may have contributed to the Salem Witch Trails due to causing hallucinations if consumed.

You should rewatch the movie, the mother is pregnant in the beginning. So Sam is the mothers baby. And they were cast out of the plantation because of the father's pride. The father had a different interpretation of the Bible.
