there's old witch folklore that states that boiling the flesh of children grants witches the power of flight. the twins are missing at the end but the coven of witches are dancing around a boiling cauldron, and then start to fly. soooooooo uh yeah. them kids got cooked.

Seems a waste of good resources, I always thought the pagans were practical by nature, they don't worship for the sake of glory in this life or the next. What's the power of flight going to do for them? they are not actually travelling anywhere, so casting the spell is like a psychotropic drug, for the rush.

The folklore you are talking about is Witches making flying ointment from the flesh of children specifically. They’d put the flying ointment all over themselves which is how they’d fly. The point of the broom stick was to be comfortable in the air. The brooms weren’t what granted them flight.

I've seen this movie so many times and this is the first time I noticed specifically that Caleb chokes up an apple after talking with Thomasin about how neither of them have seen one in a long time (I think it was more noticeable in this video because the moments were edited to be close together). I also love the conversation the father has with Caleb about the corn going bad (not in this video)- ergot is the fungus that grows on corn- implying that they might be ingesting ergot, which causes hallucinations and seizures. How much of their experiences were real (because a witch has been hexing them) and how much is hallucinogens, exacerbated by religious hysteria? I love this movie so much because I always find something new to contemplate. Watching along with you was wonderful!

This is one of my favorite movies ever made. If the people from this time period could make a horror movie, this is what they would have made. If you showed this to them, it would've scared them to death because it's exactly what they feared.

The best part about Robert Eggers' movies (besides the phenomenal acting and directing) is his use of dialects. For this movie and The Lighthouse he did research (by reading diaries, journals, and reports) on how people spoke during those time periods. It gives his films a legitimacy that few other films capture.

That "Wouldst thou like to live deliciously?" line has lived in my head rent free ever since I first saw this film years ago. Modern culture kind of whitewashed how insanely creepy the concept of witches must have been to people back in those times, and this movie PERFECTLY revives that old sense of dread we lost a while ago when it comes to witches.
@okapi7559

This movie flawlessly captured what must have been like to be a puritan back then. They leave England for the United States and find it to be a land completely wild and full of unknowns, and with religion making them believe that the Devil and evil is in every corner and capable of corrupting everything, even you and your loved ones, they must've gone through a lot of hardships. Eggers says he's embarrassed by The Witch nowadays, but it'll forever be my favourite movie of his!

This film is a work of art and a masterclass in Horror filmmaking. I remembered seeing this the day it opened and it made me an A24 film fan ever since. Robert Eggers put some much working into getting every detail of that historical period right, even to its dialogue. I'm a huge expert on the Salem Witch Trials and this film really captured not just the authenticity, but the paranoia. Anya Taylor Joy and the rest of the cast really carried this movie. It's a masterpiece.

The boiling of fat of the child for flight comes from extreme perspectives on the making of “flying ointment”, a salve made by European witches often from hog’s fat and nightshades. The flying ointment would be applied to the head of a broom under ritualistic conditions and then used by witches that would “ride” it in flight. Datura is considered one of the most popular nightshades for this salve (and is quite toxic). Most flying ointments these days are practically colognes without a nightshade component, and there are many historical recipes that are traps laid by practitioners gone by, riddled with vicious toxins.

This film is a brilliant look into the isolation, paranoia, and fear of the frontier days. Eggers also uses many different witch tropes from the days, the rabbit, the goat, the young witch, the old witch, the coven, the bonfires, the talking animals, the succubus, the bloody milk, sudden misfortune, and possession. The beauty of it is, did any of it happen as we saw, or is it all a hallucination because of spoilt rye or just good old madness?

I honestly feel like the father doesn't get enough credit for being a pretty emotionally available, loving father, especially for the time period. He didn't jump to conclusions about Thomasin until Caleb literally died, and even then he was pleading with Thomasin to convince him she wasn't a witch. He truly loved his family, he just made some bad decisions. Edit: also at this time it would have been completely reasonable to conclude she was a witch, the fact that he resisted it for so long makes him an historical outlier in my book.

The story is open to be interpreted either literally by the folklore, or more psychologically, that the things they are seeing express anxieties, especially for children on the edge, or over the edge, of adolescence. The two older children are in the age cohort of the girls in Salem who has fits and accused people of bewitching them. The New Englanders believed that the land in America they were moving into was all Satan's territory, so perhaps the parents' warning about the woods reflects this point of view. 'Familiar spirits' are demons, which can take the form of animals, that the devil sends to accompany witches in their enterprises. The Providence author HP Lovecraft, who was steeped in New England lore, refers to an entity called the Black Goat of the Woods with a Thousand Young. I think he might well have been inspired by lore surrounding the Devil appearing in the form of a goat to lead the witches' Sabbat.

17:00 Woods in this folklore are associated with witches and the devil who have their rituals out there. It stands in contrast to the villages that are land subjugated by the Christian settlers where there is no hiding "sin" because everyone spies on everyone else. You can see this usage in The Crucible, the WGN Salem series, or the Chilling Sabrina comic series that preceded the Netflix show.

Hey guys, another great reaction.😊 Although THE VVITCH gave me that eerie & slightly uncomfortable feeling when I 1st watched it, I really liked it. I liked it enough to suggest it to a friend, &then watched it w/her for my 2nd viewing.😊 My friend commented on whether/not the family members were dispatched because of committing 1 of the 7 Deadly Sins. The father's sin was Pride which he admits to. The mother's sin was Wrath mostly directed @ Thomasin, but also @ the father. Caleb's was Lust. The twins were guilty of Sloth by not doing their chores & playing all day. Causing Thomasin to pick up the slack. The only innocent ones were the baby & Thomasin. The baby was sacrificed because it was believed that the murder of innocence & if the baby was not yet baptized that it would enhance the witch's power by giving it over to the Devil.. I don't think the baby was baptized because the mother complained that her babe was in Hell. In the end, the witch & the Devil succeeded in corrupting Thomasin's innocence. Having murdered her mother & having no family left, she decided to go the way of the witch in order to live. @ least, that's the way my friend & I saw it. The acting in this movie was stellar. U all watched GAME OF THRONES, right? The actors that played the mother & father are both from GoT. Anyway, I guess that's all I have to say.😊👍

Everyone thinks the Devil comes at you with horns, red skin, glowing eyes, fire, and a pitchfork. They’re wrong. The Devil comes at you with everything your little heart has ever wanted. You just have to be able to sign your name, and if not, he’ll help guide your hand. Great reaction!
