Grace Sherwood is my 10th great-grandmother, on my maternal side. Her love of animals, midwifery, and herbalism has not changed in our family. Many have said I am the reincarnation of Grace, herself. As to this, I will not proclaim. Yet, I hold many of her gifts. I am proud to say I am of the lineage of Grace. We all still live in Virginia, not far from Witchduck. May her name be held in grace, itself. Mote it be.

That makes me happy that a statue was erected in her honor. The woman was a victim of her times. Ignorance and fear are very powerful. There are times in history I wish I could go back in time and smack some people for the atrocious acts of cruelty.

Aww YAY! You're in my neck of the woods! In Hampton there is the Air Power Park. "This free, 15-acre park features several vintage aircraft and experimental space launch vehicles from the 1950s and 1960s, including jets, missiles and rockets." We also have Bluebird Gap Farm which is free.

I'm so shocked right now, I've lived in Chesapeake, 10 minutes away from Va. beach, and had know idea! I always told my kids that Witchduck rd. was where they would dunk witches, but never looked up the history.

Her neighbor who accused her was also the captain of her jury along with her accusers friends. She was one of my greats grandmas. I really like her because she stood up for herself.

The location of the statue is near the site of the colonial courthouse where she was tried & sentenced. She was said to love animals & often fed birds, strays and woodland animals, including raccoons. Of course, the fact that animals would come when she called made people think she was a witch.

Some people think a mold in Salem drove them to madness, so that they took the extreme caution of executing their witches. Maybe that same mold wasn't prevalent in Virginia at that time. So 8 years seemed crazy long to them.

How big of a difference in diet or climate between VA and MA back then? Ergot doesn't need a whole lot to get started, heck rushing to harvest the rye as the rain starts is all it really takes...and then as it's stored it can go wild. Scary story about a town in France either just around the end of the 19th century or the beginning of the 20th.
