Itll be crazy if the next witcher beats the next elder scrolls. Which it probably will. Cause bethesda is seemingly incompetent

Gameplay wise and graphically it probably will. Release time? Maybe not. CDPR is learning a whole new state of the art engine. Bethesda is using their old beater that they've had for 20 years and know every inch of. If Witcher 4 launches before Elder Scrolls, then Bethesda needs to finally realize that the Creation Engine needs to be taken out back and shot.

@@ChaseSchleichtrue, but CDPR has switched methods of development from waterfall to agile and they're partnered with Epic on the use of UE5 instead of just licensing it. So, while they're learning a new engine it's a mature engine, that sounds more user friendly for devs, and they have the resources at Epic to assist. Elder Scrolls 6 probably will come out first since Bethesda says they have a playable version, how "playable" it is could vary depending on how they define it. That said, I think Elder Scrolls 6 will be a massive disappointment as long as Bethesda continues using Creation Engine. I believe we'll get a 4k textured Skyrim, and if it was 2017 I think everyone would be on board with that. However, it'll be more likely it's 2027 and the game will just feel outdated. I don't see them making a big leap in quality from Starfield to Elder Scrolls 6. Exploration will probably get better since they won't have to procedurally generate 1000 planets worth of map.

Bethesda has always been incompetent. One of their best games took all the assets of a previous game, added ironsights, and a worse, bland desert setting. And it’s a fan favorite. Get over the hype start learning how to form your own media literate opinions and be a part of the movement to stop letting audiences get ass fucked when we just want to do the fucking ourselves

REDengine 3 was specifically built for The Witcher 3. Then it was modified for Cyberpunk. The core design of Red Engine was for open-world games. I think the reason they swapped to Unreal 5 is the tools. The environmental tools from what I've seen have got to be some of the best there are. Not just for creating but the modification tools are bonkers. REDengine 2 was more of a middleware engine.

I think you're forgetting all the development problem they had with working with the Red Engine they made for Cyberpunk 2077. One of the biggest cause of delays is getting people to learn their own engine and then get to work on working on the game. Unreal Engine has tons of people already familiar with it, so there's very little startup time after hiring a new developer to work on your game.

Couldn't it also be because the release on Cyberpunk on console was disastrous? Having to think about how your PC code can also run on console is a big chunk of work that's offloaded to the engine. Epic has showcased 2 targeted UE5 demos, one for Playstation (Echo) and one for XBox (Matrix) to show how the engine performs on them. If they want to go cross platform, UE5 does the job because is the same gameplay code with almost no changes when it comes to port it to a specific devices --- (Full disclosure: I've worked on apps with UE4, and I didn't have to change one bit of code between Apple and Android, all while testing it on PC).

@@zuriyel5368 yea that can work as well. after posting the comment I was thinking of V in cyberpunk and how it had fixed story and stuff with character customisation... and if they go that route.. i wish they give us Multiple witchers or non witcher character's to choose from different starting points of their story, maybe even take it a step further the other choices we left behind come back as a side character's (giving up mission or guiding us), let us get used to that character and gives more incentive to go back and play as a new character we already know in the game. They can all have different paths, while staying on the same missions. Then it might be fun. But i don't think any rpg has achieved it yet but I can only hope for this from CDPR. so, here's hoping.

After playing a lot of cyberpunk 2077 it’s clear that visually speaking the engine is fantastic also it shines with rendering highly detailed character model + it loads the map really fast however it also has a lot of issues. The biggest offender is that it doesn’t handle streaming of asset very well so it creates a lot of pop in or worst sometimes a ground texture won’t load fast enough cause you are moving too fast with your car and you’ll fall to the chaos realm lol (happened a lot during launch, not so much now tho), it also struggles with rag doll physics and npc randomisation (even on my 2.0 run I still see instances of the same npc model close to each others). If moving to UE5 allow then to deal with those aspect of their game better than RedEngine while fully utilising nanite and lumen for highly detailed environnement then I’m all for it honestly.

they were evolving and working on the red engine WHILE WORKING ON CYBERPUNK. it's actually insane just how hard and chaotic Cyberpunk 2077 development was. as one of the devs said "it's like a train moving while you build tracks in front of it at the same time." at the end of the day YES. cyberpunk turned out to be one of the best looking games ever. it's gonna be a benchmark for pc graphics for decades. but i don't think they want a repeat of that. going for a ready made engine is probably a better choice. they can just focus on the game itself and systems instead of graphics. in my humble opinion, making a medieval world is just easier than something like night city with all it's verticality and the insane amount of light sources and geometry at play in that city.

Nanite, in particular, seems like it would be a game-changer for an open-world RPG as vast as The Witcher. This system essentially removes polygon constraints, allowing for amazingly detailed scenes and objects without the usual performance hits. Every blade of grass, brick in a city wall, and stitch in Geralt's armor could be rendered with phenomenal fidelity. Then you have Lumen, UE5's fully dynamic global illumination solution. This would ensure that lighting and reflections look stunningly realistic and respond accurately to changing conditions. The glow of a fireplace, play of shadows under a stormy sky - all illuminated naturally. But the benefits could go beyond just pure graphical prowess. UE5's World Partition system could be a major asset for developing and streaming in a massive open-world seamlessly. It divides the world into a grid and streams in only visible cells, optimizing performance. Ultimately, these flagship technologies feel tailored for taking a gorgeous fantasy world like The Witcher and rendering it with unparalleled graphical quality and fidelity without compromising open-world scope. For a developer like CDPR who prides themselves on world-building, that's potentially revolutionary.

That’s potentially the entire game’s production cost. I’ve never understood devs’ resistance to trying the Larian model. You can get product to market quicker, get players to effectively be your QA/QC (and paying for the privilege), and make money in the bargain. Triple win.

Apart from the characters that are in the book the stories themselves are completely original and in some cases exceed their source material especially some of the side quests in Witcher 3. I imagine too that even if the protagonist is original, we’ll still be encountering the likes of Ciri, Geralt, Yennefer, maybe even Dykstra or Dandelion. I’m extremely confident that CDPR can build an original story with original characters set in this world

I think there are situations when having your own engine makes sense, some good examples are dice with the frostbite engine which is specifically designed for battlefield and another would be the warscape engine used by creative assembly to make total war. Unreal seems to be focused on being an engine mainly (based on the advertising) for open world action/ adventure games, so the witcher makes a lot of sense to switch to unreal 5, however, I tend to be against studios switch to UE5 because I notice there is sort of a uniformity between games made to the point that I can tell immediately that is an unreal game. This is a the reason I am against bethesda going to unreal as their games have a look and feel to them that no other games have which would be lost in a switch to unreal (I believe most of the issues that bethesda has more comes down to competency/ complacency, Bruce Nesmith (skyrim lead designer) said that bethesda become full of themselves after morrowind and oblivion success and has led to complacency at the studio).

Even if the environment has less reflective surfaces that doesn't mean the game could not make use of similar number of light sources like in cyberpunk. Imagine a village in fire, mobs with torches, a lot of mages spamming firebolts, and more. Dynamic lighting baby!

I love how UE5 games look, but only because of the GPU I have (RTX 4080). Let's be honest: those games rarely don't have performance issues on consoles or low-end ("entry level" too) hardware, because they are way too GPU demanding, and not a lot of people talk about this. Pretty much every UE5 game I know uses sub-1080p resolutions on consoles, at least for Performance Mode, and they still have severe performance issues, with the exception of Brothers: A Tale Of Two Sons Remake, because that one does run at native 1080p, but with lower settings (like lower quality shadows) and it rarely hits 60 fps anyways. The framerate is in the 40s most of the time, with drops to even the 20s, which is insane. We are talking about a short small game that doesn't have many things happening on screen. Then we have more extreme examples like Immortals Of Aveum or Lords Of The Fallen, which had a straight up bad console version. Imo, unplayable. Remnant II is another example, and I'm sure that game isn't badly optimized. We only had a few UE5 games and most of them, with the exception of Fornite, are really GPU demanding. The next The Witcher game isn't going to be another Fortnite, Brothers or Remnant. Chances are it's going to be an open world, like... a big game. I hope CDPR finds the way to make that run well on consoles.

I am worried about the stylization of the graphics/art direction of witcher 4. Even though a lot of recent unreal engine games have graphical fidelity the style of the graphics are very generic. Witcher 3 has a certain charm to its art direction that I love and I really hope they just don't go with hyper-realistic art direction with witcher 4.

I don't think even 10% of the magic of the Witcher 3 was due to the engine ('s color). Amazing Writing, great music and atmosphere unique to each area, super high quality side quests, well created open world with believeable lore and detail and characters you could identify/empathize with etc. Was the Magic. Fortunately; all of the above can be re-achieved in UE5, i would say easier actually, due to the tech; Especially the atmoshphere & lighting part.

what you say it incorrect so the whole hypothesis is incorrect. ALL materials are reflective - car hood, glass, tree bark, ground, stone - it's all reflective but to a different degree. For the engine it doesn't really matter. As soon as some engine supports physically correct lighting and materials you can build medieval castle or a moon station with it with no changes in rendering needed. one thing tho - red engine has probably best streaming in the world, will be interesting to see comparison to unreal. also red engine supports like dozens and dozens of dynamic lights on the screen, while unreal like 6 or 10 ? anyway, it's all goes down to other aspect IMO. everybody knows unreal. nobody knows red engine. if they want to scale to 3 large IP's as they say, they will need tons and tons of developers. hot to make it happen ? switch to well known tech that will make your hiring easy and also the devs will have transferable skills (which would not be the case with red engine). it was business decision. i saw stuff like that in other companies...
