I love that Suzanne Collins always has a specific theme she wants to explore. She doesn't just write new novels in the Hungergames franchise because it's popular and guarantee her money, but because she has something to say and it fits into the setting she built and suits the characters she has already established. And I absolutely agree with her, the usage of propaganda, what is real and what is not, is on one hand a more prominent issue than ever before and on the other hand is Panem a great setting to explore it with its advanced technology and its dictatorship. She's not just milking something for money, she's using the potential of what she has created and I respect that.

That art style of How to Summon a Fairy Godmother cover is a modern take on Art Nouveau, a very popular art style from 1890s to 1910s.

Pre-Raphaelites, mmm, okay, I can see that, at least to the degree that their influence is clear on much of the art nouveau movement in general. This cover specifically reminds me of Mucha’s “The Seasons” 1896 series and 1897 series as well as “Precious Stones” 1902 But good references, everyone should look them up 😉

@@starsift Just like Bainter said. Gravity changes with distance (source and the thing affected). And the moon for example doesn't have the same gravity as the earth cause the mass is also really an important factor :)

The Last Wish and The Sword of Destiny are the BEST witcher books. Yes, they are "story collections" but they're not side stories, they are very important character pieces and essential for the plot. They also each have an overarching element that makes them more than anthologies. Especially Sword of Destiny has one of the most narratively satisfying moments in the whole series. One the show tried and completely failed to capture.

I would've been so confused by The Witcher books... my boxset has The Last Wish first but it's not numbered, then Sword of Destiny (also unnumbered) and then Blood of Elves which has a 1 on the spine (: so good to know!!

I disagree. I think saying The Last Wish is the first book in the series is like saying The Hobbit is the first LotR book. It’s the first book in the universe (kind of), but Blood of the Elves is where the series story starts.

I actually started with Blood of the Elves and only read Sword of Destiny and Last Wish after Baptism of Fire, I didn’t have too much issue, though I had watched season 1 of the show before

Some people could totally read 2 collections after the saga ends and get it but some people cant then misunderstand it all and hate the witcher. Thats not the outcome we want tho. But going back to ur reference the Hobbit was written first just like the short stories both also predate the events from their respective follow ups lotr and the witcher saga thats why it could be great insight to read them first to get to know the world and characters better.

Its also ok to read the saga then short stories its just that some info/worldbuilding/character development wont be there and some readers lack patience and knowledge that its in short stories that came before the saga that fleshed it all out so the saga can focus on the plot and further development.

YES!!! Its amazing. I think they continue the comic series but I didnt read that yet. Its not Vertigo label just black label but its just a lot of shenianigans happening at DC. Plus there is the Wolf Among Us which is a great game and hopefully they give us an anticipated sequel to it sooner or later. They dropped a trailer for it to release early 2024 but it most likely got delayed.

I don't know, may be it's just mine experience, but almost all Polish fantasy writers that I've read follow the same Sapkowski's model. Meaning, they start with first books of short stories, only then move to full novels. Robert Wegner, Jacek Piekara... just the same (I like this model though).

​@@alkrimiy Thats coz Sapkowski's work influenced and pretty much kickstarted Polish fantasy. Some took notes some didnt and do their thing. Now we got so many Polish authors that write fantasy and all of them at some point read Sapkowski which could impact their writing.

Whenever starting a franchise. Investigate and make a list of everything ordered by chronological release order. Warhammer 40k took me months and is still bot perfectly organized because it is hard to find what month a book was published in

Huh. After watching (and loving) the first two seasons of Witcher and loving it, I also started with Blood of Elves and DNF'd. The writing style, short-story feel, and overall not understanding what order or time things were happening really turned me off. Now I learn I started on Book 3 😅😅

Man, I remember first getting into the Witcher series almost ten years ago when there were only really fan-translations available in the US, and even then there were amazing fans posting reading-order recommendations that helped me out a lot. Thank you for this PSA, Daniel! Those books are amazing and worth the read- especially if you like short stories and great, thematic and poetic narratives. And grim fairy tales.

Yep. I started with blood of elves a few years back, and only read the short stories just before I read the final book. That led to some whiplash! It really doesn't help either that the blood of elves starts with big letters and only a few words per page, which my book reader senses tell me means it's the first one in the series. Please fix this.

Those short stories were published first in the magazine called Fantastyka so they were simply written before the saga. New readers aint aware of that but if u do ask specific questions u get a specific answers.

Kinda related to what you said about the order to read the Witcher books: I read Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials trilogy out of order (2, 1, then 3) purely because the first book was already checked out of the library at the time and that's actually the order I recommend people to read them. My reason behind this is The Subtle Knife starts off in our world and Will, the protagonist of that book, makes an excellent audience surrogate

It's so weird, when Songbirds and Snakes came out everyone was super mad cause it wasn't bought Haymitch - but it added a bit more to the HG world. With Sunrise of the Reaping its really hard to add anything that we don't already know. I think it would be cool if the story was, like, told to us by a future Haymitch (after HG trilogy). [Spoiler] Cause at the end of Mockingjay Katniss, Peeta and Haymitch write about all they had been through. It would be like killing two birds with one stone - we get Haymitch story and see a nice add on Epilogue of the entire series. Either that or have it that Haymitch is telling this story to Katniss and Peeta's kids or something. I don't know.

Souls light (or lite) refers to Dark Soul and they play style. Basically Elden Ring is a Souls game but heavy.

Souls-lite usually just means that there is more than one Chooseable Difficulty, but most of the rest of the gameplay is inspired by Souls-Like Games, though this can vary.

Unpopular opinion related to the rant in the introduction: There is not a single pretty or good The Witcher paperback or paperback boxed set in english, currently on the market. I read in English because eventhough it's not my first language, I have a pretty good understanding of the language and also because it's cheaper (like half of the price cheaper) than reading in my native language. I am sure that I will love The Witcher books but I am struggling to find a good set. Either they have the game's covers wich I am not much of fan of (not the games, but having gaming screeshots as book covers) or they have that stupid unremovable Netflix logo. Even the ones I consider prettier are still pretty "meh". Not to mention the fact that, like Daniel said, they sell a lot of them separately which makes no sense at all. At least some of the sets, whilst still considering Blood of Elves to be the first one and count it as 1, include the both short stories books in the correct order

I'm excited about another Hunger Games book, I really enjoyed the prequel about Snow. (Didn't like the movie for that one though.) I feel like Suzanne Collins gets slept on too much just because of the young-adult label on her novels, I think the Hunger Games is a great and surprisingly nuanced story about rebellion and propaganda.

I feel that aBoS&S had a problem with the halves being disjointed, to the point that I think Suzanne Collins could have gotten away with a second book for the second half, though it wasn't wrong to have it all in one. The movie, on the other hand, needed the Dune treatment. It would have been so much better with two full arcs and would probably have had just enough run time.

I don't know if you've talked about it before but Xbox also showed a new trailer for Metaphor Re:Fantazio, which is a turn-based JRPG with a fantasy setting from the creators of Persona. I kind of dismissed it before, but I've been convinced to check it out because of the gameplay they showcased and now I'm pretty pumped about it. It's also coming to PC and PS5, btw.
