I love The Witch’s Shield, it’s a great go-to for protection magick. I agree, he doesn’t fear monger in that book. I had the pleasure to attend a workshop he presented on this book and I just came across my notes from that class, so this was really timely!

I really appreciate the balanced approach you take to reviews! Calling out the pub date of these books, acknowledging where the author speaks to a specific audience or from a particular viewpoint, and how he could/should have included some use warnings (yikes!), are great ways to recommend a book while protecting the people you are giving the rec to; AND of preserving the good and useful elements of an older work despite what we perceive as flaws from a more up-to-date perspective. Nicely done! Following you and becoming a Patron prompted me to pick up The Dabbler's Guide to Witchcraft by Fire Lyte; would be interested in your thoughts on the book if you've read it!
@TheWitchOfWonderlust2 жыл бұрын
I've read it! I personally feel it's exactly that - a dabblers guide. It wasn't anything I felt I should make a full review on, just because it's a basic beginner's book with a bit of a different perspective, but otherwise it's just a good beginners book!

Generally, a good video. I would probably recommend Jason Miller’s book “protection and reversal magic” more so, as well as Paul Huson’s “mastering witchcraft”… The latter book in my opinion is the best book on witchcraft (for a beginner) ever written, and is compulsory reading for any of my coven members (so are Jason’s books, which have a similar style to “mastering witchcraft”). Two other really important points. 1. Using the term ‘Wiccan’ is not really an appropriate term, especially for Christopher Penzack. Neo-Wicca is the correct term. A true ‘Wiccan’ refers to Someone who is initiated into a lineaged Gardnerian or Alexandrian coven. (Eg, some modern initiates include Thorn Mooney, Brian Cain, Levi Rowland, Jason Mankey, Patricia Crowther, Jack Chanek, Christian Day, etc). Most of these initiates Do not call themselves Wiccan; they call themselves ‘Witches’ or ‘Initiates’ and practice witchcraft as a religion, which is historically how witchcraft was originally practiced. Some of these initiates call themselves traditional Wiccans. 2. Christopher Penzack is a CABOT Witch (trained by Laurie Cabot in Salem); the Cabot tradition is not Traditional Gardnerian or Alexandrian Witchcraft (Wicca). Most of his “Wiccan” material he utilises is actually NeoWiccan, which emerged in the 90s and is based on the plagiarised ideas of Scott Cunningham. Neither Scott nor Christopher were ever Initiates. More traditional styles of counter magic and protection are presented in the grimoire tradition, in Mastering Witchcraft, and in a book written by Dion Fortune (Psychic Self Defence), the Witches Bible (by the Farrars) and books by Doreen Valiente and Rituals of the Golden Dawn (Stephen Skinners book “techniques of high magic has information about some of these techniques).

White sage is not used for cleansing it's used to invoke . The other sages can be used for banishing but white sage is pretty much the only one that can't be used for banishing. It's used to create a more harmonious space for spirit . So if you try to banish with it its going to make the problem worse .

My car plays CDs, computer has a disc drive (external disc drives are relatively inexpensive as long as it's a CD or DVD drive), and my game systems play CDs so I'm good. I generally like to rip the audio off of my CDs to have in a digital format as well, which I just do on my computer. Anywho, great review. I will look into these two books, I started to read another one of his books in the late 90's and early 2000's. They didn't connect with me back then. But that was when I was a new witch. I will give him another try and maybe these books will resonant with me. I love protection spell and rituals and who doesn't like to attract money to them. I haven't done one in a minute, been doing health, protection, and growth spells. Thanks so much for these great reviews on his books and I too still own a CD player, it is in my room with my small stereo system. Could you like, make a "beginner's library" style video one day? I know there's a lot to the basics and one of the reasons that I don't feel comfortable actually dabbling into witchcraft is (one because I don't 100% believe in it (but I want to do it because even if I'm positive that symbolically doing something does effect one's mental state and because of that alone can have a tremendous positiv effect.) and secondly) because I first need to understand how magic works to start testing things out. I don't want to do love spells and other crazy and at least arguably questionable stuff. I want to gain confidence, stand up for my self, protect my self from bad energy (because that's something that I actually think has been following me for the past few years) and be less overprotective of my self (I know it sounds contradicting but I tend to shut people out of my life just to then suffer alone in silence.) I wan't to stop being frozen.

Christopher Penzack also wrote 'The Casting of Spells', which is the first book on Witchcraft I ever read - that book should be mandatory for all beginners as it teaches everything a beginner needs to know. I just finished reading his other book 'The Lighting of Candles', which is all about candle magic. He's a great teacher, especially for those new to Witchcraft, and his books are so well written. I look forward to Book Three of The Magickal Craft Series. Interesting that in his earlier books he mentions the rule of 3 constantly, as that's something he entirely leaves out of his later books. Whilst he does give a VERY brief warning about "paying the coin" for your magic and spiritual consequences, he does not go into any great detail. I think Wicca is something he left behind...

It kills me a little inside when lists of herbs don't have actual medicinal and real world effects added to it somewhere. At least the most important points: poisonous, irritant, bad for pets. And I find this happens most with protective herbs, which kind of shows the intent to a lot of witchcraft protection, a bit baneful to the antogonist.
