It's English Border (as in the English Welsh border) Morris dancing. Very much a living tradition: as the barker says, it's from Market Harborough (not on the border) because that's where he was when he wrote it. There are various interpretations of the face painting and why Border sides do and Cotswold sides don't. 1 Cotswold sides went up from the Cotswolds to London and surroundings, where they wouldn't be known, in quiet times in the agricultural and forest year, the Border sides were dancing locally because there were no rich cities near enough to travel to to dance. 2 Cotswold Morris is art so the dancers were happy to be known: Border Morris was basically thought of as demanding money with menaces so it was probably a good idea the magistrates didn't know who was at it. Take your pick. Personally I dance Cotswold but play for a Border side... This is a great dance.
