It's insane how this and Midwestern English are considered dialects of the same language while Ukranian and Russian are considered entirely different languages.

Doric is a north east Scottish dialect. It has a lot of similarities with the Scandinavian languages and a lot of the words are the same. For example the words ‘hoose, bairn, ken, til, oot’, are all the same in Norwegian for example. ( Hus (house), barn (children), kjenner (to know), til (to), ut (out). Among many other words and phrases.

I think we in the north east have the advantage of being able to understand most dialects all over Britain because we hear them all on tv and radio all the time but you rarely hear Doric ,it’s like a foreign language to most ....although I do sometimes struggle with full on northern Irish if they’re really fast talkers

@@g.s.1722 I'm a Scot who has worked in Antrim and Down a bit. Rural folk from both counties often sound a bit like rural Scots just across the water in Galloway or Ayrshire and the middle classes of NI can sound very similar to middle class Scots. It's the industrial working classes in the likes of Belfast and Derry who have the hardest to understand accents for me as a Scot, but they usually speak English, albeit in a strong accent. It's mainly the Antrim and Down farmers who speak an Ulster dialect of Scots - they even use good Scots words like footery (mentioned in the video). They use distinctively Irish words as well though.

Re the comment 'It's insane how this and Midwestern English are considered dialects of the same language while Ukranian and Russian are considered entirely different languages.'. I did a Linguistics master's degree and in purely linguistic (language-related) terms I totally agree, it is just that political factors tend to be more important than linguistic ones in determining what is a language and what are dialects- i.e. why Doric and RP are the same language as are totally mutually unintelligible 'dialects' of Chinese, but Ukrainian and Russian or Hindi and Urdu, which scholars say are really easy for speakers of the other to understand, are considered different languages- even though they differ less than the English spoken in London and Newcastle
@nutyyyy9 жыл бұрын
Aye, there's really no real definition of what makes a language, a language and what makes it a dialect.

@nifralo27528 жыл бұрын
+Max Barnish Did not know Ukrainian and Russian were so similar but you are right, another example is Arabic, while Iraqis and Libyans both speak "dialects" of Arabic, the average Iraqi would have no clue what Libyans are saying.

I forget who it was, but somebody once defined a language as being a dialect which possessed an army and a navy

Its not, English and Scots are officially classified as different languages. But there do seem to be some odd people out there that still think Scots is a dialect of English, which is mad. You can't have a dialect within a dialect.
@hyperion10286 жыл бұрын
CaptainQuo If this is a language then Australian should be as well.
@Hwyadylaw6 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely have a dialect within a dialect. A language *is* a dialect that has been formally recognised as such.

According to actual sociolinguistics and all else sadly my friend , for as much as you'd love it to be; its not. The English can claim to have even ruled our Scots tongues well before we spoke but that's not the truth so all my losers learn to educate yourselves before your small minds encompass not only your arrogant egos but your actual realities. To quick to speak that's half the problem ah buh buh buh. Slap, shut it!
