It has to be the most re-released film in history. Sad it's not the sharpest picture because there's certainly good tech around now that can really polish up old prints. As for colours, I've never seen a washed out version of this film, it always seems to be over coloured once you get to Oz.

Yeah I have to agree with you there. The only thing is I never picked up any of the previous releases. So I'm very happy with what I've got here. When you check out the 4K picture and stack it up against the previous Blu-ray you'll know exactly what I mean when I say the colours looked washed out. Such an amazing effort

Wonderful package for a proper classic movie! So many memories of family gatherings at Christmas around the TV and having so much fun and enjoyment watching this! Now this is what you call a classic, Keith. Every Christmas as a kid this would be on and we would all watch it. Great memories of this film as I am sure was the same for many of us. This is a beautiful edition, Keith and a must for all movie lovers. The steel book looks amazing. I watched a series on cursed movies and Margaret Hamilton who played the witch, was badly burnt on the set from the pyrotechnics and was off for a few weeks. I look forward to North by Northwest. I love that one.

@@millerman9991 Yes Keith, if you get a chance I recommend it. We all know about the debunking of one of the munchkins hanging himself on set and it turned out to be one of the birds in the background well there is a guy who owns a very early version of the film and it shows that it was a munchkin hanging himself. Apparently Hollywood tried to cover it up by patching it up with a bird. Believe what you will but it makes you think.

I'm not going to lie Gary I didn't realise this movie had a history. This is definitely the first I'm hearing about it and it's probably why I'm going to try and get my hands on that episode. It's hard to believe such an Innocent movie could have such problems.

It's a very nice set Keith. You're absolutely right, The Wizard Of Oz looks stunning in 4k with the HDR. I may get this set myself in the new year if I can get it a bit cheaper. I know you like it but I was slightly underwhelmed by the steelbook design. Hey Gary. Like I said in the video this is not a numbered Edition and chances are it'll be around for another while. Whether it will drop down in price I honestly don't know. As for the Steelbook yeah I couldn't be happier with it. I think there is improvements they could make to it. Maybe a high gloss finish would have added so much. I got the 80th Anniversary pop-up deluxe boxset in 4k (which I prefer to this boxset) when that came out. I believe it's the same transfer, which, I can't complain about, because, as you said, it is amazing in picture and sound quality. Still, both sets do this film justice for its age. I'm now looking forward to seeing what's been done to Labyrinth & Dark Crystal 4k deluxe box sets, which I've pre-ordered for later this month.

Hey Keith, on a mini vacation in Chicago, but definitely taking time out for your channel. definitely one of my favorites growing up. This was always on around Christmas and Willy Wonka was always around Thanksgiving great movies to set the holiday season. talk about perfect casting the woman who plays the witch. Incredible scared the crap out of me when I was little and I’m sure you’ve seen Chitty Chitty Bang Bang that child catcher guy scared the crap out of me as well. To be honest the first thing that stuck out for me is right when it turned into colour. When you see that sequence for the first time on 4K there is nothing quite like it. I never thought It could look as good as it does. Trust me when I say it's worth checking out.

Yeah I've seen the 3D version myself and it was impressive no question about it. But in terms of picture quality the 4K release wins It hands down. Just on the colours alone. But if you're happy with the 3D version stick with it.

I only bought the 4k steelbook. I have the double 70th year blu ray collectors edition. It sad to say but there were more extras, books art cards and so on then on this release. I suppose the extra bonus disc from that set is not in this 4k set because its only 1 4k and 1 blu ray..

To be honest I was more interested in getting this edition because I own so many of those collectors Editions from Warner Brothers. All of them go beautifully together. There is definitely not a dedicated bonus disc with this set. Which is a shame.

@millerman9991 Yes all Samsung TV's support HDR10+ because Samsung pioneered it. I don't understand why more companies don't support it because it costs them nothing. But they would rather pay a fortune to Dolby for Dolby Vision.🙄

I think it's one of those things like Blu-ray vs HD DVD. Only one of them can remain and Dolby Vision was the one. Not only that but you also have to realise that HDR Plus is only exclusive to Samsung where Dolby vision features on everything else so naturally they would caterer towards Dolby vision more.

@@millerman9991 Panasonic, TCL and Hisense support HDR10+. And some more recently released 4K Blu-ray's have it. Bloodsport 4K released on Mediabook last year has HDR10+. Prime Video and Apple TV have lots of movies and TV series on HDR10+ as well so it's still being supported but not as much as Dolby Vision.

Wait so they removed the HDR10+ on this release. I swear to god Dolby must be paying people off because why on earth would they do something so stupid. I may be mistaken but it does seem like HDR10+ support is slowly coming back, it died out for a while but I'm seeing more & more releases with it. Honestly I don't understand why it isn't the priority over DV, I mean Samsung are the biggest manufacturer in the world & a lot of other brands support it. I'm pretty sure there are more new TV's that support HDR10+ than DV, but I guess Dolby's marketing is that good, just look at how they've killed DTS. Still I feel like they could easily convert DV to HDR10+ automatically so there's no excuse. And if they stopped putting inferior grading on the HDR10 version this wouldn't be an issue anyway.

Hi Keith great review. I already have the limited edition emerald box version of this classic so won’t need to pick this one up. I’m slightly disappointed I didn’t hold on because this steel is fantastic Hope you are well my friend, I mentioned a long time ago back when you got your Sony Oled that if I ever gotten around to be lucky enough to get my hands on one myself that I might have to reach out to you and pick your brains as to what picture settings you recommend for both Blu-rays and 4K’s. I received my Sony A8OL today and we just watched the movie 65 with Adam Driver on 4K I’d never seen it before and we were absolutely blown away by the colours and contrast on this set. I know that you have had yours for sometime now and I remember you saying you’ve tweaked it several times to come up with the best settings. I’m feel slightly overwhelmed looking at all the different options. Should I use cinema mode or it is best to use custom which I’ve heard people say? Any good advice you could share would be massively appreciated my friend. All the best Steve.

First off Stephen great to hear that you got yourself a brand new Sony TV. I have to admit 65 was a great movie to check out on that television. It is absolutely breathtaking and not only that but I actually enjoyed that movie. Not sure why it got the hatred that it got. It's very hard to explain to you Stephen what I use when it comes to my settings because I have three different settings. One for Blu-rays and the other two is HDR and Dolby Vision. You mentioned custom and cinema mode. What I actually use is a feature that you won't have on your TV until you install it. It's called custom for Pro. If you type that in to Google you should be able to find out all the information that you need to install it on your TV. My best advice to you Stephen is to mess around with it for a while until you find a setting that best suits you. I ended up getting mine professionally calibrated in the end. It can be so overwhelming but trust me you will get used to it

The artwork sells it for me. I do wish a flying monkey was there. I couldn't care less about any of those extras. I already have the poppy field 4K steelbook & a blu-ray steel, so it's really hard to justify buying it. Honestly, if they'd went with any other character on the cover, I wouldn't be about to buy it. I just had a thought. How cool would it have been to have the witch on the slipbox cover & Glinda on the steel book, the steel being pink & the disc holder artwork as her bubble!? 😎

Hi. Can anyone tell me why there are danish subtitles on the standard blu-ray disc, but not on the 4K. I've seen it before and sometimes it's the other way around.

Unfortunately I'm not at home so I can't check for you. But if it's the same Blu-ray disc as the 75th anniversary disc which I'm presuming it is according to blu-ray.com there is in fact Danish subtitles

Hi Keith the 80th anniversary also is 4k. Is this the same transfer do you know ? Otherwise the steelbook us enticing to me but maybe I should hold back for a sale to get that , just not sure at the mo. Great stuff. Excelsior

Hey Del. It's the exact same 4K transfer that was on the 80th anniversary. Why change it when it looks as good as it does. The release is widely available and I can't imagine it selling out

@millerman9991 you know how it is......a 4k from arrow then 2 years later a 4k from scream factory for the same film.....so i had to ask really and as always we both agree why change it ? So yep....holding back until a sale. Excelsior

I have to say that personally I preferred the artwork on the previous 4k steelbook, the one with Dorothy sleeping in the flowerbed. There's also that 4 disc set that included a 4k, 2 Blu-Rays & a CD. It has this really cool pop up image on the box and comes with stills, a poster & map of OZ. That's probably the nicest set overall.

I need to check out that edition that you are talking about. It doesn't ring a bell. I think the best release I've ever seen for Wizard of Oz was the release that come out in America on Blu-ray. I honestly can't remember which anniversary it was. I remember you got so much in that set. I think there was even jewellery in it if I remember correctly

Be honest. Is the picture and/or sound quality appreciably better than Blu Ray (at least enough to invest in the 4K)? What's the difference anyway? Maybe I'll wait for the 100th anniversary release which will probably be interactive: you're really there, and you actually turn sepia during the Kansas sequences.

Every single aspect of the Blu-ray they improved on with the 4K release. The grain structure is better resolved. The picture is so much sharper and the colours literally blow the Blu-ray out of the water. So yes there is an appreciable difference. Of course it all depends on the equipment you're using as well

What gets me about these "Collectors Editions" is they're nearly double or sometimes over double the price of the standard and all you get extra is Printed Cardboard. The only Collectors Edition I'm interested in is The Hitcher which has a book for interviews and a book for the original script.

The thing with myself is I love every single aspect of releases like this. Whether it's the outer case or the Steelbook itself. I even love the way the postcards are presented. Not only that but it's also the definitive version to own and for that reason alone I think it's worth paying extra

@millerman9991 Oh absolutely! If you get enjoyment from having a nice package that's fantastic. I've just got the "Insane Collector" mindset where the most important part to me is the content on the disc and I want the most content possible like the complete uncut uncensored movie and any deleted scenes or cutting room floor material is great. Never been big on commentaries but it's nice them being there and I do like special features like Behind the scenes, Bloopers and Making Of, I particularly loved the one in the Shining. I wish special features and deleted scenes were given more love and remastered.

@WesTheHunter don't get me wrong as much as I as much as I enjoy fancy packaging it will always come down to the disc and it's contents. Ideally I like the best of both worlds.

I completely understand that Lee. This movie is not for everybody. As for the Blazing Saddles release great to hear that you have it pre-ordered yourself. I really hope Warner Brothers deliver on that 4K transfer. You're not going to believe me when I say this but I have not seen young Frankenstein. I was meant to get around to watching it but I never did. I was very tempted to pick up that Steelbook edition that came out on Blu-ray. I still might. Thank you once again for stopping by

@lee-the-artist-1392 yeah I was aware that Mel Brooks directed it but I didn't realise it was the same year as Blazing Saddles. The sad thing about it Lee is if it didn't happen on its 50th anniversary chances are it's not going to happen anytime soon. I really hope I'm wrong when I say that for your sake. You never know maybe they'll wait and see how Blazing Saddles does and if it does well they might consider it.

Don't need it, I have the 3D BluRay. Looks fantastic and 4K dos not support 3D. Also the film rating was raised for the 3D version from G to PG because of "some scary moments". Probably those flying monkeys in 3D!

@@millerman9991Yea, Grauman’s Chinese Theater is possibly the most legendary theater in motion picture history. It’s on Hollywood Blvd and has all of the iconic hand and foot impressions of legendary figures in front of their doors. That’s THE theater when it comes to major film premieres. That must of been something else to be at that premiere that ticket is for.

Gotta be honest, I really don’t like this film. It’s one of those “classics” people DEMAND that you like. I didn’t watch it all the way through until I was 13, and it really didn’t live up to the hype.

I completely understand that. It's definitely not for everybody. This movie was a staple in my life. You could never make it past Christmas and not see it on the TV.
