The Wizard Of Oz(1939) If I Only Had A Heart.
Buddy Ebsen was originally cast, but due to allergic reaction from the aluminum powder makeup, Ebsen was replaced by Jack Haley.
Lyrics:
When a man's an empty kettle
He should be on his mettle
And yet I'm torn apart
Just because I'm presumin'
That I could be kinda human
If I only had a heart
I'd be tender, I'd be gentle
And awful sentimental
Regarding love and art
I'd be friends with the sparrows
And the boy that shoots the arrows
If I only had a heart
Picture me a balcony
Above a voice sings low
Wherefore art thou, Romeo?
I hear a beat, how sweet!
Just to register emotion, jealousy, devotion
And really feel the part
I could stay young and chipper
And I'd lock it with a zipper
If I only had a heart

Fun Fact: The lady who sang the line "wherefore art thou, Romeo?" is Adriana Caselotti, the voice of Snow White in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937). She was also paid $1000 for her only line in the film.

originally the tin man was played by buddy ebson and his costume was made of lead and his face was painted in aluminium dust this caused him to suffer from lead poisoning and he was rushed to hospital the director then called the hospital and demanded he come to work but the hospital denied it. so he was replaced with jack haley and the costume was changed to cardboard and metal and grey face paint. you can find the original version of the song on youtube sung by ebson.

Jack Haley grew up in Boston. This is reflected in his accent here - “No haht”
@superjackster0165
@superjackster0165 2 жыл бұрын
Here’s a little fun fact. Jack Haley did not use his normal speaking voice when playing the Tin Man, only when playing Hickory, one of the farm hands in Kansas. His normal speaking voice contained none of the almost falsetto-like quality that the Tin Man's did. This was Haley's own idea, and he himself said that this was the tone of voice that he used when relating bedtime stories to his then-small son, Jack Haley Jr.. The effette voice also contributed to the whole "Friends of Dorothy" mythology.

And you'd never guess he was brought in at the last minute. I mean, a similar thing happened with Fraggle Rock in 1981 when casting was underway. Not many people know that Karen Prell actually auditioned to play Mokey, because she thought she had more in common with her. She was understandably a little disappointed when she was cast as Red, but she eventually found out that she really did have a lot of Red inside. And sh still performs Red to this day!

The Lion does eventually get the spotlight in the song, If I Were King of the Forest. You're right, Heart is the best, because that's where the Tin Man shows he already has a heart. The Tin Man reminds me a little bit of Mr. Spock from _Star Trek._ Vulcans were supposed to have No Emotions, but every time an episode focused upon Mr. Spock, mister 'Pillar of Stone' was always on the edge of an emotional breakdown. The Tin Man already _has_ a gentle heart, he just needs somebody to share it with.

To me, if I only had a heart resonates even stronger with Data from Star Trek The Next Generation. He’s an android, and while he definitely doesn’t feel in the same way other humans do, he isn’t without feeling as much as he claims. He was taught for a long time that an android couldn’t be many of the things he deeply wanted to be. His greatest desire is to be human, he doesn’t want to stop being an android, he just wants to be a human too. He must have been inspired by the Tin Woodsman because his character arc and desire to be a person who can feel resonates with him in so many ways. The irony of someone so gentle and kind and caring, and selfless believing that they cannot love is profound. His earnest wish to be human is the most human thing of all. Of the human members of the cast, he is the most human of all. Data’s character mirrors Spock as his opposite. Spock is ashamed of his humanity and attempts to suppress and hide his boundless emotion that he sees as a weakness and a threat to those around him. Vulcan feelings are so much more potent than human emotions, and so for them the only way to think critically, logically and ethically was to learn to suppress their emotions. Humans are the opposite: when we suppress our emotions we cannot escape them, we merely no longer recognise their sway over us and we become aggressive and cruel to ourself and others and leave those who are in tune with their emotions to pick up the pieces and do the emotional labour that the emotionally repressed person should have taken responsibility and accountability to do so themselves. For humans their is no choice between emotion and logic, because we cannot function without fully understanding and reconciling both as necessary for a healthy mind. Emotion is meaning, logic is understanding. You cannot understand without meaning, and you cannot find meaning without understanding. Spock is both Human and Vulcan, both knowing he has a ‘heart’, wishing he didn’t, and wishing that he could have emotions without shame and self-loathing. While Data isn’t a particularly emotional person, and from an outside perspective he seems like he would make for a very successful Vulcan. In reality though, his desire to be human is in and of itself the most human thing of all. Sometimes he will describe an experience he has had in his forthright and earnest way, and he will say the most heartfelt, heartbreaking thing you’ve ever heard, only to say that he is incapable of feeling sadness but he imagines that of he could, it would make him sad. He will sometimes say that his feelings cannot be hurt, but it becomes more and more apparent that this not only isn’t true, he genuinely believes that what he experiences is not important enough to be considered equally valid as organic human feelings, despite them evidently being incredibly important to him. Brent Spiner plays him with such subtlety and nuance and innocence and humour and dignity, and as someone who has been made to feel like I don’t belong, Mr. Data is the Star Trek character I think I relate to the most alongside Mr. Spock. They are both so different and yet they are two sides of the same coin. I chose to listen to this song today because I had been watching Star Trek TNG, and Data reminds me of it. So to see another Trekkie see parallels between these characters was a welcome surprise :) LLAP 🖖

It wasn't an allergic reaction; the aluminum powder clogged his bronchial passages. But he went on to a long life and career, creating two T.V. icons: Jed Clampett and Barnaby Jones. He died in 2003 at the age of 95.

I have to wonder what the film would be like with Buddy Ebsen (Jed Clampett) as he was originally cast in the role. It'd be interesting to hear him sing, but stillI can't picture anyone but Jack Haley singing this song. There's no way to describe it other than "heartfelt."

@@SillyCreatureSally Wow... I just heard it. Hard to imagine there's an alternate timeline where that was the version we got. I wouldn't call it emotionless per se, but that recording definitely doesn't capture the longing that Haley imbued into his rendition.
