"The Wizard of Oz" Talkback W/ Dina Massachi

For the 85th Anniversary of The Wizard of Oz, IPH presented a week of screenings of the beloved classic. On the final evening of the film's presentation, audience members were joined by Dina Massachi, Project Director of CharlOz. Massachi has written and presented numerous academic essays on Baum’s Oz and its various adaptations. She edited The Characters of Oz: Essays on Their Adaptation and Transformation (McFarland 2023). Massachi also appeared in the “American Oz” episode of PBS’s American Experience. She is a lecturer for the American Studies program at UNC Charlotte; one of her favorite classes is a course on The Wizard of Oz.

I knew a lot of this as a huge Oz fan since I was 7 years old and was gifted the 50th Anniversary VHS tape. Margaret Hamilton and her stunt double was burned. All three guys had to eat lunch in their dressing rooms. Also, technicolor only had ASA 8 as a speed for the film, so there was a TON of light that was needed for the Technicolor. This increased the heat in the sound stages. Buddy Ebsen with the aluminum poisoning.
