Hey I’ve also got the same interest as you and I aspire to be a great director but I also have the problem of worrying of people disliking the films I will make soon, but what terrifies me the most is what I can do, when you think about writing a script it’s worrying because it needs to be original and creative and sometimes deep meaning and that what makes it hard for me because I don’t really have a exact vision, and I don’t want to screw up. Hopefully I’ll see you at the top with me as celebrities and be proud of our accomplishments we wanted and succeeded, I’ll see you on the red carpet.

@@bobhatessinners8327 I think art that's made with the idea of how people will like it or not will turn out to be shit. Take Eminems for instance. Your concern should be with creating good art, having something to say, and having a burning desire to say it. Fantasizing about being on the red carpet is not going to get you there.

Bravo. You’ve got balls making the clear cut difference between the director’s role and the cinematographers role, thank you. As a female director that has graduated from one of the top film schools in the US, it gets so draining having to constantly argue with the cinematographer over which lens I prefer to use, or where I should place my camera! How about making it work, instead of bullying me about why it can’t so they can get their beautiful shots instead of focusing on the story! Please elaborate on this subject further so everyone can get the record straight once and for all. If more directors knew how to properly use light and lens - things would be different. There is only ONE director on set - PERIOD.

I'm just worried that I won't be good enough. I think mainly tho I'd love to be in the film industry as you can create relationships on screen and off. You can make memories on and off. Always keep in mind that filmmaking is an artistic endeavour. There are a lot of filmmakers who are better than you. But don't be scared by them, and don't compare your work to theirs; instead, learn from it. The most important filmmaking lesson I've learnt is this: "It's only in comparison to what you've done before. What you create does not have to be better than what others create, but it must be better than what you previously created." Keep this in mind and you'll always be motivated. :)
@devonthurgood93814 жыл бұрын
This answered a lot of questions for me. I always wondered why films seemed to be considered a creation of the director. I always thought "well, if the script poorly written, isnt that the scriptwriters fault?" While I suppose thats partially a 'yes', the director still had to gove it the thumbs up.
@JoshuaFortuna5 жыл бұрын
Great topic and well stated point. However, the reason for titles such as Director of Photography, Casting Director, Art Director, etc. is because there are people below them. The Director can say “I don’t like the shadows on the face”, but it’s up to the DP to relay to his/her department to get that situated. That’s like saying Jeff Bezos is directly in charge of each employee at Amazon.
@Bubbalovecats3 жыл бұрын
I agree with what is said in the video. As you know there’s a whole lot of ego floating around on set - and it’s rare to find a talented cinematographer who understands that his job is to serve the directors vision - not his or her own.

im thinking about going over into the film industry, and i think i want to direct. im not sure if i understand what that would entail. from my understanding, a director gets the idea for the film, gets a scriptwriter to make it into a script, then gets a producer to handle the money and schedule and stuff, then gets actors and all the things that tag alongside that, then overlooks all the filmmaking stuff as it starts production and post-production. right? do directors have to do most of the other stuff like filming and sound and producing and stuff if it is a small budget film? i want to know exactly what i am getting into.

Thanks for the video. I've been debating this for a long time and I really appreciate your explanation. Animation directing and live action directing are widely different roles and this might be the best long definition that fits both worlds. At least for animation, the director role is much less creative than we give them credit for. Head positions bellow him like head of story, production designer and animation director are often the ones figuring out ideas and solutions while the director keep them on track with his vision. The director's work happen before and after the creation itself. One thing to notice is how well accostumed we are with working with poor guidance that it's fairly easy to get a good result despite the director instead of because of him. Not every director fully understand his part and just to flash out ideas while the artists struggle to assemble into something real. I'm not sure if that's as common in live action, since the production on set takes a much shorter time and crew are paid by the day, while for animation it takes years with crew being paid by the month or approved material. Another thing that I'd like to add is that not every film imo has a director. My first two short films were done by myself alone. Instead of directing, I was simply sitting down and doing it; which is a completely different position and skill set. Only in my first feature that I actually went into directing as I had a crew bellow me to direct. Some filmmakers make excellent films on their own but are terrible when they get to direct as they lack the skill (and interest) to pass a vision to another artist create.

So my question is am i the director or the artist? I have worked with a local artist on a small budget music video . The artist is the one who came up with the overall concept like "oh i want to do this song, i want it to be on the beach with me wearing a gown". But i am the one who came up with all the different scenes, whats supposed to be there in the intro, whats in the chorus, 2nd verse and so forth and the set decor in each scene. I also research all the looks and fashion and create mood boards. But since i cannot make the decision alone i definitely have to consult the artist from time to time to see if shes comfortable with everything or if there's something she wants to tweak here and there. And she does tweaked here and there because she has a vision in her head as well. I guided the camerman on the angles thoughout the shoot and make suggestions regarding the lighting tosuit her face since she can't obviously see herself while performing. I am also there 100% of the time guiding the artist in her movement and face and so forth. I also physically help the crew build the set since its a small budget video. I was there in the editing room (several times) deciding on the cuts etc. with the artist sitting there as well. But the artist wants to be the director. She was the one who first came up with the principal idea of how the overall vibe and im the one who filled all the blanks. I found the location but she aslo was searching for locations as well. So whos the director in this situation?

I don't agree with the statement that a cinematographer is essentially the director if the director trusts them with creative control of the camera. The job of director on a film set was traditionally an actor/performance focused roll. Many directors forget this and get absorbed in technicalities and trying to get cool shots. Getting a great, believable performance from the actors is much more important than camera placement.

Directors also must have their webcam be cinematic
@Superbustr7 ай бұрын
The director completes a lot of pre production paper work. Essentially the director plans out the whole shoot sometimes with and sometimes without the help of a producer or cinematographer. Then if the Director is good, he enjoys drinking a lot of coffee whilst the crew get on with it and shoot the film on set. Everyone should know exactly what they are doing on set and should be made well aware if the tasks at hand, if the director is good. On low budget shoots you don’t hire many if any head of departments and often have to do multiple production roles yourself.

My son will be 7 on Friday and he needs a resume for school so he wants to be a director or producer and I don't know the difference 🤣 He does his own little clips on KZbin with puppets or plushies 🤣 So I'm thinking Director and screenwriter 🤔

not too sure what i want to be. I am going to go to uni in September and am not too sure what course to apply for, or even go to uni? I know that covid has messed up the whole industry, so do you think it would be better for me to just get straight into the industry? Or go to uni for 4 years and come out with 56k in debt?

So basically director is the leader of filmmaking

Shame you failed to mention director's having to keep in mind the budget. They can't do infinite amount of retakes. Maybe there's a timeline or the actor has other schedules etc. Wished you went deeper in to that side of things.

If a movie has good cinematography, does it always mean it's well directed?

Great cinematography can't save a bad movie. Most hollywood blockbusters have good images, but if the story sucks, its still a chore to watch.
