The real life story of my own relationship with a wolf pack. Documentary with drama sequences illustrating events in my own life. I hand-reared wolves and then re-introduced them into the wild. Filmed in and around Zagreb and the Velebit Mountains in Croatia. BBC Natural History Unit, Prod/Dir: David Wallace.
I posted this copy following this: "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Just to inform viewers that YT blocked this video again. As it seems only in Australia, Austria and Germany. Hope it won't be as before when it was blocked in a whole lot of countries all over the world. Seems like some users enjoy much more rights than video creators on this network. This made me think of an idea to delete whole the channel with over 120 videos already uploaded since 2012.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the 3rd of September 2018 checking the status of this video I noticed it missing so I found it "blocked worldwide" five years after upload due to copyright content that was found in it. Because of the claimant policy, it can't be played on You Tube as YT copyright info says. It has been restricted just in 3 countries recently upon about 107,000 views reached. I was adviced to remove the song (Twelve Moons (Pt.1: Winter-Summer,Pt.2. Summer-Winter) Jan Garbarek Group - Sound recording 22:24 - 23:20 match/ CLAIMANT: UMG On behalf of ECM Records) using You-Tube software what I did. Here is now the copy with that song missing but video is luckily playable. Till now the revenue on adds shown went to claimant.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On the 21st.September 2018 video turned to be playable again after the removing of claimed portion of music but also including complete sound out of it.
"Audio muted due to copyright claim".
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
On October 19th 2018 as I checked, this video has no word wide restrictions any more (in fact none). It has 4 copyright claims (claimants: SODRAC, ASAP, SGAE_CS) It is monetized by copyright owners (music) and eligible for revenue sharing. I am receiving no revenue from adds shown.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
PLEASE NOTE : Still a complete copy of this documentary with no any copyright claims and no restrictions, is available on this channel. You are welcome to watch it.

Bravo Pavle!

***** As I believe there is no any problem for the people from all over the world to visit my country. A lot of tourists arrive during summertime on the Adriatic coast. But some National parks are interesting for visiting during wintertime, too. It almost seems that my nation accepts all these tourist even better then own domestic people. Croatia is not a big country but very, very beautiful for sure. We all know what the politic is so nobody can trust them today. It is sad that many nations are always pushed into conflicts by politicians who serve to who knows whose aims.

Thank you my friend, ... and for those tears that surely mean a lot ... imagine what I had to pass over fighting for them to survive. The BBC there is asked to be polite towards the viewers and not to go too far showing the emotions experienced in that story. It seems to me like a dream that I once had. There is another round of videos ready with a kind of deeper approach ... I have been preparing since long time ... need comments to edit and publish divided in a few episodes. Before that I absolutely need a break and visit the mountains this winter as I planned but haven't got a chance. Can't wait seeing those well known areas where I used to spend time with my part of the mountain and on my own way.

Pavle I am starting at the beginning, now that my attention can be 100 percent focused on you and your story ♥ I didn't think it was possible for me to cry so many different tears: happy tears, tears of relief & then so very many tears of sorrow. I honestly am at a complete loss as to what I could possible say to convey what your life, your story, your wolf family has done to my heart, mind and soul. What an incredibly beautiful and moving story of how Blue and Lik became friends at such a young age, even growing up they would still play. That part where you starting noticing how wild Lik was when he and Blue were in that field with cows, Blue knowing Lik was going to do something bad and watching him roll around in the excrement to mask his scent. It's a beautiful miracle how you found Laca and she and Lik made their beautiful babies. I was blown away that Lik spent so much time looking for you and chose you over his wolf family. I was sick to my stomach knowing someone shot Laca, and you brought her Lik and she surfaced after hearing him howl for her. The movie you were doing where you brought Lik on for a friend and instigated him attacking you and later on he actually did but he did so because he felt trapped. I love that you spent 16 days looking for Laca and sometimes seen her in the wild. What happened to her front arm/paw after she was shot? was she able to heal on her own or did she need medical attention? You put in so much love, so much time & so much attention to detail and learning with these wolves what you said earlier on about observing them and respecting their space is key. For Laca to have been shot because of a small bit to a girl, that family should have thought before feeding a wild wolf and treating it like a dog. I'm so sorry RIP Lik, I'm glad you were the one to bury your friend but because of you he had 17 long years where as if you didn't rescue him in the beginning he never would have had a wolf family and a human one with you, he was a pretty lucky wolf if you ask me ♥ There are so many important things to mention in this incredible documentary I will rewatch it again with a notepad at my side. Your love for your wolf family is one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, I can't imagine what it must have been like to release them back into the wild, knowing it was best for them. You have my absolute respect and admiration and I am grateful to have crossed paths with yours.

I am glad that my story impressed you this way. It is really great that I managed to film at least some of those, I might say "adventures" but I do not believe it is possible to imagine what I didn't succeeded to put on tape. More than twenty five years filming wolves ... creatures that I was able to touch with my bare hand every moment, every single day or night and whenever I wished to. Fortunately there is more to be seen once I finish editing the commentary ... I hope I will do that soon and show a bit different level of my relation with those magnificent creatures. I owe that for them and to myself, too. Here are some of my other uploads that show a bit more details on the same story ... the story that is in fact still alive for my life goes on the same way. I still visit my mountains when ever I find the chance ... carrying the heavy load of all those special memories in my backpack. I really have to thank you, Heather, for all these nice words. You are always welcome. (pb)

I have invested a large part of my life in achieving this goal: Let the wolves back into the wild from where the hunters once abducted the entire litter after killing their parents. I couldn’t even plan to document that true story. Then I decided to record at least parts of the event that I could as a souvenir I would say. This is how this probably unrepeatable "story" was made.

Vratio sam prirodi davno otet "draguljčić" ... i to srećom, čak višestruko. Danas, kad imam prilike posjetiti te poznate planine kad me uhvati umor nakon dugih lutanja, prilegnem umoran tamo gdje me san svlada. Pozdrav.

There is the editing project on my experiences from the wild with wolves and wildlife in general... I planned it to be a two and a half hour long documentary ... but as it seems I'll upload that all divided in 4-5 parts. It is the old archive footage but the story might be interesting. It touches the "Wolf man" in a way because that documentary is based on my own diary, too. So expect more details on wolves and my relationship with them in the wild. I did that all myself completely alone ... that wasn't easy a t all. I would like to finish that once for ever. Recent troubles with my old Land rover slowed down all my plans but I managed to solve all the problems in time. Hope, I'll have enough time and peace to complete editing. Thanks for stopping by ... you are always welcome.

Fingers crossed, in the uk we are without wolves, bears, lynx other mammals are struggling but im optimistic about the future...we now at least have beavers. @@steffanskipper2397 Yes, that whole life story took a long time, and I honestly didn't expect it to. Back in 1980, quite unusually, an advertisement was published for the sale of 6 wolf cubs at the age of 20 days. I didn't believe it, but I still set out to see for myself. Honestly, maybe it would have been better for me if I had never come across that scene. It was more than obvious that they were not dogs even just by the stench they created. The price for one is 100 DM and I spent that much for the trip. All I have to do is buy at least one so that I can set him free the next day i it al fails. Who knows if I will be able to do anything with his rearing, perhaps even with his upbringing? But which one to choose? How to leave the others ... and I would prefer to pick them all up. And I decided, almost squinting, for the one in the corner who wasn't even aware that someone was watching them and wanted to take them away. The way home through the beautiful Lika, after which I named him (Lik), was full of all kinds of thoughts ... because who knows what will happen to the others. Maybe I'll go back for the others, but as a student I couldn't count on any money soon. Arriving home, I immediately clashed with my father. No wonder, because the wolf was then generally considered a pest and hunters would receive rewards if they killed one. I spent a month with that smelly, messy, wild creature because my father threatened to take him away as soon as I wasn't around. But that also passed slowly and he became a member of the family and even got a German Shepherd puppy so that he would not be alone and that she would replace his own family from which he was separated. And the relationship was created ... over time neither Lik could do without her nor she without him. Personally, I didn't want to bother them and I preferred to stay away because I certainly didn't intend to tame the wolf. .... what started with that wolf here ended with his death at the age of eighteen..... You can't even imagine what I had to go through and what experiences I gained. By the way. ... a wolf in Scotland. To be honest, I am not very optimistic, especially for such attempts in these times. In fact, thinking about what the minimum wolf needs are, I would feel sorry for anyone reintroduced like that. And what if they reproduce? How would the brothers and sisters of those for whom there is no space end up? I brought Bijela Capa (White Sock) home when he was six years old. In fact, Mr. Vesel from ZOO Ljubljana gave it to me as a gift, understanding my intention to return him to the wild. Not long after that in fact after a year of preparations I released him in the company of Heidi the she-wolf (named by my friend J.D. Wells from Kendal, Cumbria) so he wasn't left alone. I followed him and modestly helped him even for years and luckily they both headed to the northeast as if they knew in their genes where it was the safest..... a huge territory is needed just to be able to choose their home. With that, I actually fulfilled my promise to Lik and Lača. Greetings to you and your son from Croatia

I totally agree with GraveyardDave19, this documentary is just so "real", and I too was teary-eyed when the wolves had to live amongst themselves, worried that they werent prepared for what lay ahead of them. The wolves remain to be the most misunderstood creatures till now, and i am hopeful that the preservation efforts for them would be given the attention and support it needs. ive always enjoyed watching films and natgeo features on the wolf. thank you for sharing your life with these amazing creatures thru film, Pavle! I have never been able to actually live with an animal as complex as wolves or bears, though i know had i been younger, i'd do so given the opportunity. yup, this is turning out to be the best natgeo doc ive seen so far!!!

Hope I'm not missing a big point to say I was so happy to see you had a family, Pavle. It was not obvious until almost two-thirds into the documentary, but what a beautiful scene it was. I know how proud your sons must be of your story. My heart aches for those affected by the war and the awful injustice and terror experienced by so many. Guessing many animals paid great prices, as well. Thank you for caring for these extraordinary creatures. I'm soft by comparison: I don't even like a bit in my horse's mouth. You had a different path...one that was both old school and pioneer in one. Here's sending you extra angels of peace and comfort. May your days with loved ones - both two and four-legged - be filled with joy and understanding. Paz y luz. Brett Butler

Yes, "cubs" directly from my species. Somehow, it seems to me that it was easier when both my sons were younger, because maybe they were glad that I worked so hard with wolves, but later I wasn't sure anymore. Maybe I went too far, so in fact, even those who wanted to could no longer follow me. And in that terrible time of war, a man hardly cares about anything but himself and his close relatives.. Animals manage on their own. I saw horrible scenes and fates of animals that cannot be forgotten. I treated the wolves as my family, and the responsibility for them was perhaps even greater. But the experience I lived with them cannot be compared to anything. I had the great honor of being with them for so many years. I tried to convey a lot from my real life story and share it with people but I still have to hide some details because, as I used to mention often: the wolf should remain a secret ... for his own good.

Thank you for these kind words, Goran. I am only sorry for the quality of the video isn't as I would like it to be. The format is kind of obsolete but perhaps that makes it special somehow. It has been quite long time since the story happened and it certainly would not be suitable to watch it in modern high resolution. Besides, I could not get any better copy of it for the BBC didn't send me any better. The original footage is filmed with simple amateur VHSC camcorder. Nothing better was available at that time nor I could afford anything better. I am not professional but I tried to do my best to record that real life story. Yes, it was not easy to come out of those hard times and be satisfied, let alone happy, regardless of the fact that I wanted the best. Honestly, it was extremely difficult for me, especially since no one could help me. And the emotions, they really crushed me. I published some documented memories on this network with the intention of sharing them at least with like-minded people. Times have changed, so people live differently and have completely different priorities. On this channel, I tried without many words to show real moments from the wilderness that I personally experienced over many years. I hope that after this long break in posting new recordings, I will be able to continue with more recent recordings or parts of my abundant archive. Every so often one learns of a human being whose affinity is drawn towards nature just as early man once was; it's a gift to those who can wonder just like nature intended us to do. I tried to describe the mountains in my own way. I am still visiting those remote wild areas. Perhaps next month as I planned there will be the chance for me to travel there. After that I have to return editing quite long round of uploads that will widen the story described in The Wolf Man on some other way. The commentary is just what has to be completed. Hard work especially when you do not have adequate conditions to work in. But as I hope the time will come when I will "get rid" of those emotional details that are heavy load for the brain unless you share it with others. What I am sorry for is that the picture quality isn't as good as all these modern uploads are but I believe even such obsolete footage can at least tell the viewers the real life story that seems to me as a dream, now.

Although it has been long time since I visited the area where I used to contact the family of wolves I often think to visit it some day again. In fact I was trying hard not to approach them so that they could become as wild as possible ... the only way for them to survive ...with no human touch at all. It surely wasn't easy for there was far to strong bonding between us what I couldn't even expect. It is not easy for me to recall those days ... I am still visiting the mountains almost regularly, having all the lessons received from wolves well remembered. Through the time I gained quite a respectful experience to be able to feel myself quite safe in the wild. I managed to film many of my adventures and luckily succeeded to upload a small part of them onto this channel. Pavle Balenovic so many thanks. I can relate to your story since as a teen I often spent my summers roaming the mountains of the north of spain and fishing in the florida marshes. Many hours lost in nature surrounded by wild animals- I would vanish days and at 55 can say they were the most “authentic” years of my life. At a certain point ones mindset seemed to blend into oneness with nature and almost everything made sense... Your bond with that wolf and harsh winter takes your adventure to a whole different level.. I can only envy and cherish your experience.. I got a glimpse of what you lived for years.. You should go back to those mountains and get in touch with the wolf inside you.. Loved your adventure!

Ukoliko nekim kontaktima mogu pomoći kontaktirajte me mailom. Hvala puno na komentaru. PB

You just made me recall those days when whole the pack was still at home. I loved to be with them ... as much as possible, as close as possible. I even used to sit on the ground near them and pick that old five string just because I was a kind of satisfied. They understood that well. Thou it wasn't nice situation at all ... imagine. No one could nor would help me anything concerning wolves. In one moment there were eight wolves that I have to take care about. They all looked happy whenever I would sit beside them with that instrument on which even sad tunes look happy, somehow. I am glad you recognized the Foggy Mountain Breakdown under the scene when Lik and Blue chase each other through the woods in the age of few months only. Many years passed away since those great times but occasionally I take my banjo and pick some notes for myself. Thanks for visiting my channel. YOU are Paul???I had no idea!!! Yes I will watch all your downloads! You are an amazing man. You understand the wolves and it is almost like you are a part of their pack. The wolves have been persecuted here in America for over 200 years. There are a few wolf packs today in Yellowstone and other protected areas but still some of them get shot and killed by ranchers.Oh and yes I recognize Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and Dueling Banjos, because I was born and raised in the Appalachia Mountains of east KY. My state is the birthplace of Bluegrass music.I was raised on banjo and fiddle music. My Uncles used to sit on the porch and play Bluegrass for hours every Saturday evening ...it is a part of our Hillbilly culture. How wonderful that a Croatian loves this kind of music. RIP beautiful Lik and Blue and Lacha.

Oh yes that's me ... still and alive although even to me that story seems like a dream. Mostly because I am back .. how people would say, back to my own kind. Honestly it wasn't easy to "survive" those emotions especially when I had to release them to where they truly belong. It wasn't easy for them, too ... I was absolutely aware of that. Just imagine, each day through those eighteen + six years I was able to touch the fur of the wolf, or pull his bushy tail whenever I wished to ... it is impossible to describe what the experience is left behind all that time spent together. I still visit my mountains where everything reminds me of those years that surely can't happen ever again. I am glad that I managed to film at least some details about that time. Hope soon, another round of videos I prepared, will be uploaded as soon as I be able to finish editing. I am sorry for the footage are filmed mostly on quite obsolete format which no one uses any more but as I mentioned it can't be repeated ever again to be filmed in 4K or more modern 8K picture resolution. Till my next uploads you still have enough to watch on this channel and join my adventures virtually. Once they were all real and true. Thanks for the scene of your uncle and his banjo, I can imagine and even hear the music he played.

Sorry, I do not have it ... I am quite well occupied with contacts on YT what in facts takes a lot of time I would better use editing my future uploads at the moment. There is huge archive left t be sorted out and prepared for viewing. I do not believe I will be able to prepare and edit that all myself alone. But if I won't be able who will? No one understands what each shot is saying or representing. I knew exactly what I was filming. Besides there is quite a lot of ideas and plans to do up there in the wild. Hope now, you got the idea why YT is the only way I can accept today for keeping contacts. (together with the email address shown there). I owe myself to finish a short book, in fact my "diary" (I might call it this way) from those times ... I need even more to be able to publish it some day.

The wolf is a mighty, caring creature that should never be hunted on again by humans. Lachas death should have been prevented by the wolfs (non exciting) right to live in the wild.

Osobno i danas mi upravo taj svijet najviše znači. Divljine. Priroda i život u njoj.

I am very glad to receive such the message and thank you for stopping by. White sock is released a year after I returned him back from Slovenia where luckily despite all the troubles I managed to realize my plan. He was always on my mind for he was left while others released into the wild. It wasn't fair for him and he absolutely didn't deserve that. (my favorite he was). I hardly found him a mate to be released together so I saved another captive wolf with him. The very night I released them, White sock showed up on the road as I was returning home ... a few miles away from the release spot what made me almost cry ... he tried to follow me. For a few years later I succeeded to follow his trails and support them both with some food. John from Cumbria joined me once to check the area and paw prints. There are some more details on White sock in my uploads here so take a time and check them if you please. Hope you'll enjoy. Besides I still plan to continue with many more on wolves. ... thanks a lot for the info from Ljubljana ZOO I am going to check that right away. You are always welcome.

Today on the 3rd of September 2018 checking the status of this video I noticed it missing so I found it "blocked worldwide" due to copyright content that was found in it. Because of the claimant policy, it can't be played on KZbin as YT copyright info says. It has been restricted just in 3 countries recently upon about 107,000 views reached. I was advised to remove the song (Twelve Moons (Pt.1: Winter-Summer,Pt.2. Summer-Winter) Jan Garbarek Group - Sound recording 22:24 - 23:20 match/ CLAIMANT: UMG On behalf of ECM Records) using KZbin software what I did. Here is now the copy with that song missing but video is luckily playable. Till now the revenue went to claimant. I am just the one who filmed all that material over more than 16 years and finished my own real life story with the BBC Bristol who showed it in public first in 1998. The status of this copy of this documentary has been changing few times although I posted it following this: "Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for "fair use" for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Fair use is a use permitted by copyright statute that might otherwise be infringing. Non-profit, educational or personal use tips the balance in favor of fair use."

Today on the October 19th 2018 as I checked, this video has no viewing restrictions any more what is only important to me so that people can watch it . Revenue on adds shown goes to copyright owners (bckg.music) as YT informs. Me, as one of the music creators (banjo) and one who filmed all this project through 18 years, mostly through the wild, the one whom this all story is about, do not have any rights nor am asking any revenue. This is how it goes in this world today. So, the audio that has been muted completely is back on its place again ... I didn't want to delete it when it was muted (although it was perhaps even expected) because all those great and positive comments, left by viewers through all these years would be lost. Hope it will remain as it is right now ... with no restrictions.

@@PavleBalenovic I hope with every ounce of my animal loving being that YT will quit bothering you and forcing you to further edit this video in hopes that MILLIONS might see this magnificent work you've not only put together very well, but that you actually LIVED what I just watched!!! My highest compliments to you my friend, what you've so unselfishly put together and posted for all to see, brought to me, in less than an hour, EVERY emotion I'm able to feel! There are moments of powerful and profound sadness, but for the majority of the film there was an amazing sense of deep happiness!!!! Happiness for the fact that there are still people in the world who understand how important the wildlife on this planet truly is. The same wildlife that can bring happiness to us that cannot be given to us by our own species. You did an amazing job at showing the bonds that can form between humans and wild animals, at the same time showing that even after a lifetime of "domesticated" living, they are still WILD animals! Watching Lick being torn apart trying to choose whether or not to be with you or obey thousands of years of instinct and be a father to his own family was incredibly difficult and at the same time heartwarming! I know exactly what you felt when you were wondering how anyone could intentionally try to kill an animal that is capable of so much love and caring, an animal that shows intelligence on the same level of humans! It was hard seeing her limping but I was so relieved to find they didn't succeed in killing a mother that was so desperately needed by not one but THREE children of her own!!! I've tried for more than 40 years to grasp what brings people to ruthlessly kill innocent creatures, I've decided that by loving all animals as much as I do I'll never be able to know why some decide to harm them!! I mostly just want to thank you for creating such an amazing work of film that will undoubtedly cause a lot of people to rethink the way they see the wolves of our world. Thank you also for giving it to the world in this way! My day will be great no matter what happens while at work and out in the world because I was fortunate enough to find and watch your vision brought to life!!! THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!!!!! I will do everything I can to spread this film to as many people as possible, maybe if enough people see it you will be able to change minds, warm hearts and most of all, bring HOPE to a human population which is rapidly losing the hope and love which we so desperately need to live a life of meaning and happiness. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!

From shot to scene on the screen it is all my own work... no support from anyone so you can understand what the efforts I am investing. Is it all because of wolves? ... perhaps I owe them the opportunity to see the truth about them. This is what I am trying to share. I am only afraid that I won't have enough chance to tell it all.
