Thank you for the great discussion, I just finished and loved The Wolf and it was nice to hear your thoughts! Since you were wondering about genre, in France we coined the word uchronie for this type of books, I think you sometimes use uchronia now in English as well. It's synonymous to alternate history, but it's a whole thing in France, a proper genre of speculative fiction :)
