I'm also interested in Black Leopard, Red Wolf, but I'm waiting until the trilogy is published to read them all in a row. I'm a big fan of A Brief History of Seven Killings. If you do read that too I hope you like it! They're probably very different.

just finished the first book. 7,5/10 for me. loved the writing style, loved the worldbuilding and the story itself was great, but the pace was simply to hasty for my taste. I love character stuff in fantasy and this has very little of that. the plot just rushes along at ant incredible pace. I feel as if I've just read a lengthy prologue to something.

I have been curious about this "cozy fantasy" for a while, but I think I'm good after seeing this video XD It really reminds me of low/zero stakes isekai/fantasy anime where I genuinely cant tell why it has been created and who it is for.

Thank you so much for your comments on Emily Wilde - you gave me a lot to think about! I did not go into that book with a critical eye at all for probably the exact reason you said, that it’s pitched as cozy. Now hearing you talk about it I’m like, *did* I ever like that book? Because ya, I didn’t like the autism rep and the romance was so boring & unbelievable…but I think I was like ya sure, cozy fairies, whatever lol. But the changeling thing - I did not know that history & im so glad you shared because now I can be angry with you.

I love most of Tchaikovsky's stuff that I've read, but I agree with a lot of what you said about The Tiger and the Wolf. The worldbuilding was imaginative in places, and his prose is always competent, but it's too long-winded and becomes tedious, and the characters aren't compelling. And I agree on the noble savages archetype, it's all a bit reductive and tropey. Hence the John Gwynne praise...

Ohhh…I don’t think you’re going to like the thirteenth child- it is a standalone. The start of the book is really good and I was thinking that it was going to be a 5 star but then it really devolved and became a really convoluted and annoying plot. It was like she lost the plot and it didn’t really match with the beginning and by the end I was so annoyed. 🙃😳

I gave Bone Shard Daughter 2 stars. Didn't care enough to be mad at it. The series which made me mad like the way Bone Shard annoyed you was Malazan. 🤣 Gave Emily Wilde 2 stars too. The Thirteenth Child is a standalone. And I hated it 😅In fact, I don't know anyone who liked it But given how opposite our tastes tend to be, maybe that means you'll love it (note: the beginning is beloved, but it's after the setting changes and the true plot kicks in that it becomes a garbled mess that's only barely redeemed by a fantastic start)
@jelisaveta10Күн бұрын
Oh yes Lady Macbeth was a big disappointment. The vibes were not vibeing, the plot holes and a female protagonist does not a feminist retelling make. I was skimming by the end and I usually don’t do that. Finished it only because it isn’t long and I was hoping it would redeem itself… it didn not. 😔

I think foundryside is pretty good, but it’s pretty much the most hard rule magic system you can get which makes me think you’ll find tons of flaws and eviscerate it lol. The characters are a lot better than boneshard daughter at least… And if you liked Malibu rising, you’ll most likely enjoy Carrie Soto. I think it’s a better book but daisy jones is my favorite of that ‘quartet’. She also has a new book coming out this year.

I love that you have standards, and the education to inform them! But as I watch the wrap-ups where you go through a lot of books, I am left wondering; "Why so many current books?" I mean, we are **living** in the age of the artificial trilogy padded with YA froth that should have been a single novela. When you hit older books, (like "Lud in the Mist") from a time when writers had to be literate, you seem to enjoy them. The market isn't going to change, so why don't you look at someplace else? Like perhaps 70s or 80s fantasy? Or George MacDonald? or Dunsany? Moorcock's "Warhound and the World's Pain?" I'm not trying to be weird, genuinely curious. It's not just that it's harder to find a foil stamped die cut cover from then, is it?

I was wondering. I heard the concept of bone ships and i went isn’t this just one step over from liveship traders in terms of world building? Then i saw hobb had reviewed it and i was wondering is it actually different or are people praising the world building as creative when it’s very similar?

Aww, I was really hoping for a rant review of Illborn, but I don't blame you for DNF'ing the prologue. I actually liked the prologue, bad writing notwithstanding, but you are right the entire book is like that. I trudged through about 20%. Derivative world building, sexist, and some of the worst dialogue I've ever read. However, loved your rant review of The Boneshard Daughter. I didn't hate it that much, but it's definitely one of the most overpraised fantasy books out there and I don't think I'll read another book by the author. I heard she got an agent and her first book wasn't picked up by a publisher and then wrote 1-2 more books and then finally sold The Boneshard Daughter as her debut, with a huge book deal (6 figures maybe?). And that book was so mid, I was left very unimpressed. I'm kind of tired of magic systems with lots of rules. I know you don't love Sanderson, but I think he's the only one that can make these types of magic systems interesting, and even he isn't perfect at it. If you can't do it well, just let the magic remain more mysterious. It will work better for 90% of the fantasy books out there. And lastly I'll mention, I'm always surprised how much you love the Red Rising Saga. We tend to agree more on books we dislike than like, but it's a series I want to like but find exhausting. For some reason, I can't connect with the characters and don't find Darrow an interesting character. If I had to guess books you wouldn't like, Red Rising would be one of them. That said I did enjoy Golden Sun and Morning Star, but haven't enjoyed this new series much at all.

I love your rage over Bone shard daughter. I have never been interested in reading it, but now I'm kinda tempted to borrow it from the library to see just how bad it is and how many pages I can stomach before it gets forcefully returned through the returns slot 🤣 Emily Wilde's... yeah, it was not great. Read, immediately sold, no intention to continue. I don't get the love. The idea of allowing a man academic to steal a woman's research pissed me off. Allowing him to horn in and take most of the credit, and the message that it was only with a "charismatic" man would the research be accepted, pissed me off even more. (Maybe this aspect was amplified as my worst part because of my history as a science academic). The relationship felt forced. And the story in general was boring as shit. And this is before we get to the fae part. Oh, yeah, that excerpt from Illborn definitely sounds like a school assignment. Probably no more than B grade.
