The Wolfe Tones - Protestant men

A song by Irish band the Wolfe Tones about the United Irishmen. Many of the United men were northern Protestants. This a weird quirk of Irish history, considering so many Protestants in the North view Irish Republicanism with distain and deny their Republican heritage.

I think you'll find that a Republic was certainly what many Presbyterians wanted in the 18th Century. Many of our forefathers viewed themselves as Irish first, not British! Being British was motivated by economics (money) rather than for political reasons!

The truth of the matter, as I see it, is that the fight for the right of self-determination for the people of Ireland has never been a question of Catholic and protestant. To simply reduce the struggle to such a basic and ill-informed cause is to totally misunderstand the entire republican movement, and it flies against all those that have died for such a struggle. Sadly, this tactic has been with great success been used in every struggle to divide the proletariat and maintain the imperialist and capitalistic ideals of foreign powers. Just as the struggles during those dark days in South Africa was never a black against whites. Once again, the divide and rule tactic was played out. There is just one struggle and one fight, and this can be seen in every country across the world. The truth can be seen if you simply ask a question, if a struggle is won tomorrow, let's say Ireland, then what happens to the protestants? Simple answer nothing, we all live together in peace, they are also Irish. We do not then attack our own people. There was even a time in Irish history when the Irish Catholics were the loyalists. If you want to know about that, pick up a book. When a soldier dies in war, he died for his country, he did not fight and die for every one but a single group of people. Now I would just like to say I love this song, this group is also so very good, and the young Tones are just as good. Same music and same sound. They, all, seem to just have natural talent washing over themselves. Thank you.
