I just recently learned about her : read a book called The Women Before Wallis. About Rosemary, Freda Dudley Ward and Lady Thelma Furness. Despite what this video says most authors I’ve read think Freda was probably the love of his life before Wallis. They were together off and on for 16 years; but unlike Wallis, the other three knew Edward could not marry them. Rosemary’s story was truly tragic. But Thelma’s was too in a way. When she died suddenly in NYC they found a teddy bear in her purse. She and Edward use to exchange a pair of them when they were away from each other so she had been carrying that bear around for 25 or so years.

This one moved me to tears. On a separate note, Queen Mary (IMO) made a gigantic mistake, but because of that, we were immensely gifted with Queen Elizabeth II and perhaps saved from a king who might have handed the UK over to the Third Reich.

Remember that the RF was German. They followed social conventions, rigidly followed the conventions. There was at least one interfering old man in the decision to thwart the marriage of Charles to Camilla when they were both young and unencumbered. That was the Earl of Mountbatten, who hoped to advance his own granddaughter to that position. We all know how THAT turned out.

@@rinlo1424 No he didn't.....Wallis never loved him, it was all a big game to her. She still wrote love letters to her ex husband after she got with Edward. She tried to escape marrying him when she realized what the abdication would mean and how she would be the most hated woman in Britain. She tried to call the wedding off but Edward threatened to commit suicide. And while it might have been love to him, it was also an excuse to walk walk away from the kingship he had never wanted. He didn't want the hard work and responsibility. He was a frivolous but demanding playboy who still expected royal privileges and he used Wallis as an excuse - they could have had a morganatic marriage - the people of Britain were accepting of that but he wouldn't do it because he simply didn't want to be king.

There’s also an eerie similarity between Rosemary and Princess Diana. Both almost queens on the same throne. Both beautiful and charming; they were the devoted mothers of sons. Can you imagine to have known Rosemary, she did so much in her short life, very compassionate and dedicated helping others, her mother Millicent was as extraordinary too, she thought her daughter the values of life. I can see her and Edward, however it was not meant to be. What a shame destiny would take her life in a horrible way. Loved the vintage photos, soft music and your clear and gentle voice. You outdid yourself with this beautiful biography delivered with sensitivity and beauty. What an amazing woman, and perhaps she could have saved Edward. He started off on the right track, visiting the soldiers with such kindness and one wonders if things would have been better if he had not married Wallis. Perhaps not though, because he had sympathy with the Germans before her. He spoke fluent German, and the British RF is German.

It's an interesting question. I think by the time he met Wallis though he probably was no longer fit to be king, she just helped him get where he wanted to go. What do you think?

@@MythicMindScape21 Thank you for your response. I think you are probably right, especially in light of his later behavior. I think Edward was not very bright, and had very narrow interests, and essentially needed a mother (enter Wallis). He never wanted to be king really, and Wallis was the way out. Harry resembles Edward a lot; wants the perks, but can't do the responsibility. The UK dodged a bullet , and was very lucky George VI became king.

⭐️💙 Loved this biography. Rosemary was such an extraordinary woman to have been brought up with such wealth within the upper classes yet shown with humility, grace, bravery, and compassion. Such courage and strength to care for wounded soldiers displays a strong character. Her nature alone - self-assured, steadfast, compassionate would have been a great boon for the Royal family. I think she and Edward would have complemented each other. It’s always interesting to ponder how different a world it would be if a seemingly insignificant decision were reversed. Rosemary and Edward may have become the most popular and loved reigning couple. Elizabeth and Margaret would have led ordinary lives… I knew of Rosemary but didn’t know anything about her or understand her significance in Edward’s life. It’s sad to think of her losses but I imagine had she lived she would have carried on with great resilience and continually growing strength. Thank you for researching and presenting the life of this remarkable woman. She is certainly someone to admire and emulate.

I really feel like you've had some sort of experience in this field. I worked as a lecturer in History and have done some work as a journalist. I used to write quite a good deal but I always have trouble finishing novels as I am always searching for the perfect word. I hope to return to it in time, as nothing brings me more joy than writing. As for the channel, I saw that there were many biography channels on youtube, but they didn't always tell the most interesting stories, they went for a lot of scandal and superficial stuff, and left so many people especially women uncovered. So just for fun I decided to create a few videos to see if I liked it and if anyone would also like to hear deeper stories of some rather known and unknown people told in an engaging way. I was pretty shy at first, and the videos are not perfect, neither are these. But I hope to get better as we go, and having such great support from people like you really means everything and forces me to stick to a schedule of finishing one per week :) Rather than always looking for the perfect word as in a novel, I sometimes have to settle for one I might not like as much. But it has been wonderful so far. ❤❤❤❤

I heard your voice in an ad for nano zoom today. I recognized it right away. Another story I’ve never heard. Rosemary & Eric suffered every parent’s worst nightmare. 😔But she definitely did some awesome work & left a legacy of humanity. I do believe Queen Mary made a mistake. Thanks for sharing her story! ❤💐

Very interesting. Thank you for telling this story. I was impressed by the way these great ladies setup their own hospitals for wounded soldiers in France. Life was very complicated when affairs among the aristocracy were widely accepted (providing they were discreetly carried out). These days any indiscretion is probably captured on film and beamed around the world..

Pity his parents did not allow the romance, it could have been the making of a real man. Instead they were left with a weak fool.

I cannot believe these meddling mothers. Millicent wanted Rosemary to herself to work at her side, and Edward's domineering mother wanted perfection. "Bow, call him sir, and treat him like dirt" was a brilliant summation, and ending with Wallis, a dominatrix whom he almost invited to to humiliate him. He never grew up.

How about, he was never listened to? How about, since his life was already mapped out for him, by people who took NO consideration into who HE was, he was done and LEFT?

@miriamhavard7621 l agree.

So sad that Prince of Wales didn’t marry Rosemary, his Mother was so crabby & nasty! It makes you wonder how different history may have played out if he had married her rather than Wallis

It would have been a disaster.

@vickislominski7618 You are so certain of that? Edward was by nature a weak man, and a strong woman with the right character might have influenced him into being a better man and Monarch. Wallis was in it for her own benefit and that of of her promoters -- Nazi sympathizers. Reportedly, Wallis was horrified by the marriage proposal and abdication. Her aim was to be Maitresse en Titre to influence the future King that way. She found herself trapped in the role she had made for herself -- wife to a man who had given up his throne for her but now had no power whatsoever.

Mary and George were painful but at lest we got Queen Elizabeth. The Royals really are their own worst enemy

Rosemary is the grandmother of Rachel Ward, the actress from The Thornbirds. Rachel’s father was the baby in the pram when Rosemary’s son Jeremy was hit be the vehicle (Peter Alistair Ward).

Thank you for a most fascinating story of Rosemary. In her earliest photographs she appears sad, no smiles. She packed a life of service into her thirty six years. The loss of a child is something few mothers can recover from, understandably. Edward VIII wasn’t good enough for Rosemary. He was a Nazi sympathizer & gutless. Life was just a cocktail party to quote a RS song.
