I read the book several years ago and have seen other adaptations which did not do it justice. This followed the book faithfully. It was so well written, acted, and directed. The settings and costumes were magnificent. Even though I know the story, this series had me on the edge of my seat until its conclusion. I couldn't stop watching until the end. Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Like another reviewer, I never knew this existed and I am so glad I stumbled upon it!!

The very best BBC adaptation of a book ever, in my opinion. I saw it when it first aired when I was a child and it touched off a lifetime love of British literature.

Mary Pagones, I agree wholeheartedly. Especially amazing is Jenny Seagrove as Laura - the only "true to fiction" actress to portray a Victorian heroine as written. I cannot believe that it is almost completely overlooked in mentions of ‘film versions" of the novel.

The movie - The Woman in White, 1997, starring Tara Fitzgerald, is also a very admirable drama, but with a running time of just 2 hours this shortened and changed story-line may not please those who are familiar with the novel.

Quite wonderful - the decor, the costumes - all comparable to the beauty of the dialogue, and the performances are immaculate, particularly that of Alan Badel as Count Fosco. I would love though to have seen the wedding ceremony between Walter and Laura! The ending was, I am pleased to say, as all great dramas should be - an emotional tearjerker!

I finished reading the book this week and this excellent production was very faithful to Collins' story. The acting by a British cast, the sets and costumes, were outstanding (unlike many "diverse" modern productions). Thanks.

I think, nut don't quote me, that in the book the brotherhood caught up with Fosco before he could do any more mischief - but it does leave it hanging a bit in the end here, doesn't it? Great adaptation, though.

Fosco is described as gracefully obese in the novel, and I think Fosco in this adaptation has a voice that sounds like graceful obesity!

Why don't you try the 1948 movie version with Eleanor Parker, Alexis Smith, Sydney Greenstreet, John Abbott and Agnes Moorhead. Not exactly the same adaptation, but extremely fascinating as well. It's on DVD now.
@kirsteni.russell59037 жыл бұрын
Sidney Greenstreet is an impressive Fosco, but Hollywood took such liberties with the story that I find that relatively short adaptation harder to sit through! But then, I only recently read the book and saw this mini-series, which captures so much of what I read. The 1948 version will be more fun for me after I haven't been immersed in the novel or the mini-series in quite a while.

Jul Dal Yes, it was faithful to the book to the end. The only genuine Victorian lady I have ever seen in any adaptation. All the others seemed unable to fully adapt to the earlier woman as written. They cannot shed the 20th century, at least a little of it.

Fosco ends up on a slab in the mortuary, with a knife wound under his heart, presumably delivered by the "brother" who followed his coach, when he left.
@stanochocki89847 жыл бұрын
Interesting, but over-blown. Either as a novel or as an adaptation. So Pesca is an Anarchist? LOL...all of this melodrama, would have been cut short if dear, precious Laura had more wits about herself and her choice in Men. Like a Greek Tragedy, she is the catalyst that causes much pain to others. Sad, so preventively-- sad.
@OFWarhhbTN6 жыл бұрын
stan ochocki you can’t shed the 20th century. This is an almost perfect adaptation of the book; the attitudes and decisions were motivated differently then.
