1 in 20 people have a problem with hoarding - this extreme compulsion to stockpile items or not throw things away can have a severe impact on your wellbeing.
Our dedicated team are here to dig people out from being trapped in their own homes.
In this episode: Susan’s hoard fills her whole house and has made her virtually homeless. Brian from Cardiff has dedicated his life to hoarding and his daughter Heather is sick of it. And Jake is lucky to be alive after inadvertently turning his home into a fire hazard...

Hoarding is a severe mental illness. People have suffered incredible trauma and loss. I grew up with this. Never had a space of my own no bedroom until I unburied a space for myself. Could never have friends over too ashamed. I remember maggots on the dishes. As a grown woman I’ve cleared out so many rooms so many times only for them to go right back to being hoarded. I live with chronic anxiety and depression. Live minimalistic to the point of not being able to keep anything I bring home because it’s like ptsd to keep it. It’s an awful upbringing there’s no room for you to develop an identity of your own. Therapy made all the difference for me, I’ve forgiven but I’ll never forget that anxiety and depression will never leave me, all I can do is manage.

The saving grace , if any,, Is that the dog almost certainly died of carbon monoxide long, long before the fire ever reached him. One of my adult male cousins silently suffered chronic deep depression for many years and lived with his elderly widowed mother. Daniel set their home on fire and went to bed one afternoon. He was ordained as an minister in middle age. He preached at many small town, to many small congregations who could not afford to even share the cost of a half time pastor. So his only income was “good will offerings” which did little more than pay for his gasoline. He devoted a huge amount of hours weekly to those congregations, preparing sermons, visiting the sick, etc as rural pastors do. He desperately wanted to be called to a home church as at least a half time pastor. It wasn’t to be. He died of smoke exposure, and the fire never reached him before it was extinguished. We were told that it appeared that he had peacefully gone to sleep. His mother was in her 90s recovering from a slip and fall in a nursing home at the time. Although she was still of sound mind, she would not have been physically able to live at home for many years without Daniel’s help, and they were good companions, supporting each other And enjoying life, all in all, living with each other. His mother survived him for quite a long time, but never left the nursing home to live. Rest in Peace, Daniel and Aunt Delores

Those ladies are heaven sent angels. I started cleaning a hoarder's home. We didn't make it too the floors even. There were needles, things that held poop and pee. My dad and I started to become ill. And had to stop. The house still stands. People live there, just thinking about it makes me feel sick.

Hoarding is a mental issue and as an outsider, it’s easy to express disgust or concern. I can only imagine how stressful it was for the daughter who is a victim of his dad’s hoarding and the mental toll it has had on her. And Susan, I’m glad that she finally came around and sought professional help to clean her house. RIP to her. it’s not easy, but my wish is for hoarders to have been given help and support earlier.

I once tried cleaning up a Hoarder's appartement. It was tiny (ca. 12 squaremeters). The rubbish was gone by this point but I just felt overwhelmed, there was so much damage done by the roaches and the neglect.... (roach shit basically covered everything and went 2 mt up all the walls). And the electricity was shut off, so no hot water from the boiler. It's a neverending hell of fillth. It takes at least 5 liters of water, changed at least 3 times, and a barrage of cleaning supplies and sponges to just clean 1 squaremeter of this mess. It's just unimaginable for the mainstream people. It's insanity, hell.

Japanes has a massive issue with old houses being abandoned because the family do not want to take them on or are uable to pay back tax after a person dies and the population is falling in numbers. Meanwhile the Japanese continue to build and want new houses in part due to earth quake concerns of houses not being stable afterwards for sure and some Japanese houses are defintely hoarded. They are often clean but packed to the gunnels.

I’m sure he loves his dog but he should not have any pets if he cannot care for them responsibly. The dog he has now should not be chained up all the time.
