A young woman’s skin blisters and burns if she is exposed to only a few minutes of daylight. Lizzie Tenney suffers from the rare, and extreme, skin disorder Xeroderma Pigmentosum. With there only being around 300 diagnosed cases in the United States - it makes Lizzie one in a million. Xeroderma Pigmentosum commonly known as XP, is a rare degenerative disease, causing the skin to be unable to repair its own DNA once exposed - and damaged by - the sunlight’s harmful ultraviolet (or UV) rays, even resulting in skin cancer, neurological problems and developmental delays. In Lizzie’s case she has had skin cancer surgery 43 times. The 22-year-old, from Highland, Utah, has to use a specially-designed metre that measures the level of UV rays and tells her when it is safe to go outside.

I think she should consider becoming nocturnal. I've heard about other people with skin conditions that makes their skin super sensitive to the sun's rays, and they live their daily lives during the night instead of the day. That way they can go outside and enjoy nature without being covered up, and I believe there's even some communities that plan trips to places that are usually closed at night, for people with those conditions (museums, amusement parks, shopping malls, etc.)

i have photosensitivity and i have to always wear heavy sunscreens, reflective clothes, sombreros, and long sleeves every time i go out. also, im not allowed to have sun exposure for more than 30 mins esp at high noon. this film has helped me appreciate my differences. glad that shes fighting when im not.

The title is like a sequel to the video that was in everyone’s recommends a couple years ago “girl allergic to sunlight.” Weird conditions like these suck. I’m basically allergic to the cold so when I get cold I get really itchy and whether I itch or not, i get red bumps all over my body. It’s called cold urticaria and it can be really dangerous sometimes. Apparently some people can go into anaphylactic shock. Mine is really bad but that’s never happened to me before thank the gods. But it does stop me from swimming in a cold spring and being in the cold for too long because it gets embarrassing because people are like “are you alright what are those” and “are you contagious?” I have anxiety so I *really* don’t want people looking at me. I was at the beach the other day and the water was cold and I had to get out with my legs, arms and neck covered in the hive things and walk back up to my spot. Lol sorry for long story!

I was diagnosed with polymorphic light eruption 3 years ago & I no longer go out in the summer because of it. The UVA & UVB rays from the sun when they hit my skin, seem to have a ‘chemical’ reaction with my skin, making it blister & burn (this also happens through car windscreens etc). I’ve been fine up until this point in my life, it could be that due to genetic chronic health conditions that I was diagnosed with it made me more susceptible. I can’t imagine going through what this young lady goes through, hers is far more frightening & debilitating but I love her attitude towards it. And the way she encourages & loves her niece is absolutely heartwarming! Much love to both of you! X

I understand what you're saying, but that's why she wears the clothes she does and has the UV meter, the UV exposure is so low that it shouldn't pose any hazard to her if she's wearing her clothing properly. Personally I would rather take the risk (but be extremely careful) than let it make me a prisoner in my own home for the rest of my life. I'm sure they have discussed the risks with the doctor and have undertaken all necessary precautions so that she is not in danger. I doubt her decision to go outside was made lightly. I imagine the skin cancer she has had were a result of her sun exposure as a child before she was diagnosed.

As a mother I would never allow there to be a chance of something happening, There are alternatives that could be used like indoor swimming, playing outside at dusk. She is still getting these burns even with the clothes that they think are working. Think of the time it takes to have these surgery's and the risk of not surviving one of the possible burns because she wanted to go to the park in the middle of the day. If she is still getting cancer than the precautions they are using are not working.

I know Lizzie. She takes all the necessary precautions while still living the life the best she can, and she does this amazingly well. She is extremely safe. She wouldn't have had all these surgeries if doctors had recognized it in the first 12 years of her life. Thankfully her niece was able to learn about it earlier and will avoid a lot of that.

This lady is in my group on facebook for Russian Tortoises! She did a live stream one time of her taking her tortoise outside to get some sun. She talked a little bit about what the plastic covering was for. So nice of her to take her tortoise outside even though she struggles with this condition. Beautiful soul 💕
