As we stand on the precipice of Opening Day, many of us are probably thinking back to this time last year, when baseball fans didn't know when - or even if - the sport they loved would return.
While that time was worrying, it was not the first time baseball had been put on hold. During the 1994 season, in response to attempts by the MLB owners to, among other things, institute a salary cap, the MLB Players Association called for a stoppage in play.
Find out the story of the lead-up to the decision, the potential records lost as a result, and the woman who came in at the last second to save it all.

Wow, major props to the Orioles for refusing to go ahead with the replacement players to protect Cal Ripken’s consecutive game streak. That’s a class act move right there. The cinematography on this video is really incredible. Good work here Baseball Historian!

That streak was such a huge deal here. And speaking of cinematography, take a look at the broadcast of the record breaking game. The crowd shots are great. The broadcast team barely say a word and just let the pictures do the talking.

I'm old...the '94 strike broke me. I was so mad at baseball, I didn't watch for 15 years. There were so many incredible things going on that year we all got cheated out of. Hell, even the Kansas City Royals were in first place when the plug got pulled! Learned more from this video than I expected to. 10/10 Always recommend.

I was 13 when the strike happened. I didn’t watch baseball until 2005. I missed the entire steroid era. I love baseball. It’s the best game ever, but that strike was one of the worst things to happen to me. I stopped playing ball because of it.

@@caseysmith7283 Man....same... exactly. The strike happened right after my 14th birthday. I gave up playing, stopped reading the box scores, going to games, all of it. I finally got sucked back in for good when the Royals got good again (briefly). Their back to back postseason runs reminded me how much I love that game. But...that strike made me kick baseball out of my life for almost 2 whole decades. It still makes me kinda sad. 🤷‍♂️

@@matthewgodsey4268 Can I ask for your point of view on the strike? Your opinion seems to be common among fans during that time. I don't really know much about it. I'm a little younger than you and don't remember much of the details. I do remember that my dad and grandpa were mad and stopped watching and going to games for years afterwards. Just curious about the point of view of someone who lived through it.

@@caseysmith7283 Can I ask you about your thoughts on the strike? As someone who lived through it, I'm curious what your point of view is on it. I'm a little younger than you, I was only 7 at the time. I do remember that a lot of people felt like you and attendance was hurt for years afterwards.

@@artvandelay1099 at the time it very much felt like the players were being greedy. I was young and stupid then. I don’t really remember my thoughts on it with much clarity. I do know it hurt the reputation of the game. I was not “angry” per se. I was a teenager who knew that the sport he grew up with and loved wasn’t being played because people were fighting over money. As a grown ass man I understand exactly where the players were coming from, but as a kid I didn’t understand and I stopped watching until I happened to turn on the Tiger game on opening day 2005 when Dimitri Young hit 3 homers off the Royals

I was in HS when the strike happened. I remember lamenting that Donnie Baseball wasn't going to have a shot at the title that year. At the time, I was unaware of Sotomayor. I learned of her when she was nominated for the SCOTUS. As a fellow Puerto Rican from the Bronx, I was thrilled. I was even more giddy when she threw out a first pitch to Posada. Go check out her memoir.

BH, I’ve grown to loathe pro sports over the last few years. You have been rekindling my love of my favorite sport ever. I may never have the same love for it as I did growing up in San Francisco but you have reminded me of what Terrence Mann said in Field of Dreams; it reminds us of all that was once good. And it could be again.

I remember when this happened, I started watching baseball as an 11 year old halfway through the 1990 season. I remember just being so disappointed there'd be no baseball the whole summer, and really just assumed that stuff like that must happen all the time, but thankfully it doesn't.

SPARKY ANDERSON LABOUR MAN Everyone always wanna talk about player greed and never the greed of a plutocracy of owners who have care nothing for the game or the fans, regularly gut a team to deliberately lose and waive a player as soon as they start to earn any real cash only to sign them days later for minimum wage.

Predictions of this season. Well as a tiger fan I predict that I'll be depressed all season. I predict that it'll be Detroit worst season ever, and I predict that the baseball gods will not fire the worst general manager in the history of baseball, Al Avilia, because the baseball gods are pissed at me and want me to find enlightenment through suffering. Oh and I predict that the NL West will have bought and paid for a championship. Just don't know how to divide the trophy 3 ways.
