There are opposite examples of this happening throughout Murray’s scores, especially for regenerations. For Day of the Doctor, when The War Doctor regenerates they use the track ‘The Sad Man With A Box’ from the Series 5 Soundtrack. However, for Day of the Doctor, the choir & percussion is removed from the mix (& it also obviously omits the ‘I Am The Doctor’ motif at the end). And again for Twice Upon a Time, for Twelve’s regeneration they use The Shepherds Boy but the track is shortened & the guitar is removed for the first half. We will probably get the TUAT Mix of Shepherds Boy on the Series 10 soundtrack, but I doubt we’ll be seeing the TDOTD Mix of The Sad Man With A Box any time soon…

@Jackardy I just read the description. Fascinating! I have another example that you may or may not be familiar with. I don't know just how different the entire episode's sound mix is, as I haven't combed through it, but the standalone 3D Blu-Ray release (you don't need 3D capable player or TV as there's a 2D option) of Dark Water and Death in Heaven feature at least two different versions of scores compared to the broadcast versions. The first hasn't been released on the soundtrack either way, but it's when the Doctor links Clara to the TARDIS telepathic circuit and is telling her to think of Danny and where he might be. Normally, the music cuts out when the TARDIS starts to take off, and the Doctor says "the TARDIS thinks he's somewhere" in silence. In the standalone Blu-Ray version, it's an extended version of the track that plays right until it cuts to the next scene. The second is actually Freefall. I'm looking at the time stamp on Spotify, so it might vary slightly, but from 1:12 - 1:24, the mix in the standalone Blu-Ray has an extra instrument or something, and it's very noticeable. I actually first noticed this when I went to see Dark Water and Death in Heaven in theaters. They randomly released it in theaters like a year or so after it had aired, but I thought why not. Noticed the soundtrack and thought that was kind of interesting. Then, not too long after, I noticed that they released the standalone Blu-Ray for those two episodes. Had a hunch that it might be the same mix as the theatrical release, and I was right. If you haven't got the Blu-Ray, definitely check it out! Haven't been able to find that mix anywhere else. This makes me want to start coming through episodes and all their various releases to see if there are any other differences, but that's going to take so long, lol.

It's fascinating to discover that the score is different in this episode, broadcast-wise and home release as well. They must have done more tampering with the DVD/Blu-ray release than I realised. I was well aware already that they changed the end credits (for some reason) and changed them back to the style of Series 1-3 as opposed to the Series 4 style they were on original broadcast (on all five specials) but I didn't realise there were any other changes beyond that so thanks for pointing them out.

This is amazing! I love the music in this episode, particularly the section played when the doctor confronts and defeats miss hartigan in the hot air balloon! This is such a clear and beautiful version! 😊😊

Thanks! I wonder why they change the soundtrack and little things between the original and released versions of episodes. I guess they just can "finish" them more as they wanted, maybe.
@Jackardy Жыл бұрын
Possibly but I think the broadcast version is easily the superior version of the episode and the home release version seems less finished as certain lines of dialogue are missing.

@@Jackardy Is there a comprehensive list of all the changes that were made between versions? This seems like the kind of info only obsessive fans would care about so I assume someone's made it.

pretty sure the version we got in the OST is what was actually used in the Planet of the Dead near the end of the episode where the Doctor is reunited with the Tardis

Don't suppose you have a 5.1 copy of this episode that had the version of 'The Greats of Past Time' but with choir over the top of it?
@Jackardy Жыл бұрын
I wish I did. I've been searching for a 5.1 version for years but I don't think one publicly exists.
