This video left me completely exhausted and probably wasn't the best of ideas especially for a relatively small subscriber milestone but whatever here it is, the longest video I've ever done (I had no idea it was going to be this long when I went into it but here we are). Regular reviews coming soon, and thanks for 3000 subscribers again!

Totally agree with your assessment of Ishkur's Guide, aside from being a bit dated, the author just can't resist opining on absolutely everything. Is there a more modern analogue to it anywhere?

Jessica Walrus Jessica Walrus Yeah! I totally agree. I think the very IDM:ish vibe of it is very encapsulating and surprisingly titillating thanks to Björks amazing vocals.

Also, if I had to respond to the questions I asked. 1. It would be Bubble Machine Remastered, Marble Jar Remastered, Inside The Mainframe, Dark Clouds Remastered, If Tomorrow is a Ball...., and finally, Spiral Out of Control. 2. lowercase music is basically ambient music, except the ambience is extremely isolated sounds of the world (Watchmojo explains this well on their Top 10 Weirdest Music Genres). I don't mind it tbh. 3. Even if I don't follow LP, this was a huge shock for me. He had just posted a couple of days earlier and looked really happy. 4. Sunset Lover by Petit Biscuit. This is a freaking amazing ambient-downtempo-trance track which shows how much potential Petit Biscuit has.

The Wonky Angle Actually you should definitely check out Thriftworks (Pearly Whites and Juanito's Patience for example) and Vanilla (albums Soft Focus or Origin). The first one is very different to describe, and the latter one is my favorite chill hop producer, definitely great.

Ever listened to Haywyre? He's a pretty damn good producer and his jazz-inspired electro is out of this world, IMO. _Two Fold Pt. 1_ was my favourite release from Monstercat for a long while, and _Two Fold Pt. 2_ was even better. Congrats on 3K, by the way! Came here from a year end pop list, stayed for the electronic reviews. Looking forward to more good stuff in the future ^_^

awesome vid, glad i got my question answered (: I have to say about the jazz part. I think In A Silent Way is my favorite miles davis record. It's just so smooth and mellow, I'd go as far as calling it ambient jazz fusion

I know it's a bit expensive, but I'd strongly recommend investing in a decent hardware synth and/or sampler and/or drum machine. Making music on a computer is one thing, but when you have an instrument in your hands, with all the knobs and parameters to tweak right there in front of you, learning sound design is muuuuch more intuitive and less daunting/intimidating, as well as much more fun and immersive. There are some great synth videos and tutorials from channels such as Loopop, BoBeats, Red Means Recording, Cuckoo, and Oscillator Sink, among many, many others. Eventually you may find yourself expanding your setup to have a variety of gear all synced in time with a master sequencer or two, making entire songs without a computer to be seen. Depends on how much it resonates with you though, using instruments to record into a DAW on a computer is another great use of hardware. My recommendation: Get a Korg Minilogue xd. Best bang-for-buck polyphonic (plays up to 4 notes at once with their own modulators and filters) and perhaps one of the best beginner synths in existence (primarily because almost all the parameters are on the front panel, with mild menu diving only needed for some more specific, settings-based, and technical features). I started with the original Minilogue which is less versatile overall and more retro/niche-sounding, but still a great one and I may not have progressed in my music-making as much as I have to the point of going professional soon without it. As for a sampler or drum machine, I'd suggest a Roland SP-404 (one of the newer models especially), or an Elektron Model:Samples, or if you are on a tight budget and just want something simple to go with your synth and help you learn, a Volca Sample would be another good choice. Circuit Rhythm would also be an effective choice, although more expensive than the Volcas. Or, if you want the cheapest groovebox on the market that acts as an all-in-one portable music-making machine, get a Novation Circuit Tracks, which has 2 internal synth tracks, 2 external MIDI tracks (to sequence other gear such as synths and drum machines), and 4 sample tracks along with a very smooth and intuitive workflow that keeps you inspired and doesn't get in your way. Roland's MC-101 is also a notable example of a cheap groovebox, though it's very different from the Circuit. I once had less than 24 hours to come up with a live set for a friend's birthday party, and managed to set up projects on my Circuit (original with much weaker specs, not the newer Tracks or Rhythm) for 3 8-minute songs performed live using only the Circuit. It went surprisingly well and people I show genuinely enjoy what I came up with, despite some mistakes here and there, and less-than-ideal recording method. If nothing else, I hope this inspires you to consider looking into the hardware world. Many people find it liberating compared to using computers to make music with software. I personally use both for different reasons and have a sort of hybrid studio with both hardware instruments and tons of software I've been collecting. Anyway, from one artist to another, and one music lover to another, much love and best wishes. P.S. I recommend watching Psycho-Pass. Cool Orwellian-esque sci-fi anime series, pretty short too. Also check out Mum (with an accent over the u) if you haven't already. Their first two albums, Yesterday Was Dramatic, Today Is Ok, and Finally We Are No One are really cool.

Hi. I just recently got into your channel by review of David Guetta's "Nothing but the Beat". I found my old copy of this record in my closet. Back when I was 10 i was intorduced to main Edm by my brother who used to be a DJ. After that I got into more old n'stuff, and when i revisited "Nothing but the Beat" I got few cringes. Then i found your review, started to watch your other reviews and found few artist i started go dig in. Thanks. I got one question. What do you think of Gorillaz? Its such a big name in electronic, especialy now, after theirs new "controversial" release called Humanz. I think it would be awesome topic for Discography review. Greetings and thanks. Awesome channel!

Great video. I'm wondering how you differentiate between albums/artists that use quite a bit of electronic elements from more pure electronic acts. Is it where they focus their sound? Like Little Dragon, Gorillaz or FKA Twigs for example.
@TheWonkyAngle
@TheWonkyAngle 7 жыл бұрын
basically that, yeah. I typically use iTunes categorization as a guide for that, for instance they have Gorillaz marked as "Alternative" but then you got other bands on the fringe of the genre like LCD Soundsystem and iTunes marks them as electronic

Dunno why I just thought about this but you really should listen to Radiohead's discography. Besides Kid A, I would recommend OK Computer, In Rainbows, The Bends (maybe, if you like 90s alternative), and Amnesiac.

I´ll put one question here... if you would have time to answer... but would you maybe talk a bit about Jam & Spoon album Triptomatic Fairytales 3003? Still one of my favorites... really sad, that Mark Spoon passed away in 2006 and that it ended being their final album... but I thought Jam & Spoon were always great at making good melodies and creating a lot of atmosphere.

Why only limit your channel to electronic music? Why not spread out and do odd reviews from time to time?
@TheWonkyAngle
@TheWonkyAngle 6 жыл бұрын
because I feel not enough people care about the genre or give it the coverage it deserves, and it's not remotely as limiting as it appears if there is a non-electronic release that I think is particularly worthy of note I may cover it, like last year I did a mini-review of Steven Wilson's To The Bone, but most of what I listen to is electronic and it's by far the genre I feel like I have the most authority to speak on
