Nicely done Mike and well described. I like the look of the new max4. I have the previous incarnation the max3 and am well pleased with it, but the max4 seems to be that bit better. A definite must for a bit of money saving in the long run.

Very impressive, Mike. It certainly looks like a well put together piece of equipment. And the product from your tool demonstration looks very good. It is a bit pricey at over $700 USD. Thank you for sharing. Have a great day and stay safe.🙂🙂

Thank you for the demo Mike. I've got a standard Woodcut Bowlsaver with 2 blades and have used it a few times and am currently making a laser guide for it. The method of cutting the bowls seemed strange to me, but I can see that this is the way Woodcut show in their instructions, but it is different to my instructions. You showed removing bowls from the centre to the outside. With this method, you end up with no immediate way of attaching them for further turning and they have a fairly round bottom to them. The original instructions showed cutting the bowls from outside to the centre. This method means you have a flat solid surface in which you can form a mortise or tenon (before cutting) to reverse the bowl after its removal so you can form another mortise or tenon on the bottom. With the method you demonstrated, how would you attach the bowl for further work? e.g. pressure plate or Cole jaws to form an attachment point on the bowl bottom? It can be done, but isn't the original method method better?

Nice video Mike, as you say timber is expensive coring makes sense especially as fun as they are to cut bowls over 10" are hard to sell so the 10" core can pay for the blank and you get the fun of turning a 16" bowl which will be pure profit once you find someone with a house big enough for it. Been using woodcut for years and while expensive to buy they pay for themselves over and over again.

I did see one video where the turner was using the McNaughton system. He laid out the cores he was going to take, and then he put lines on the outside of the bowl as well. Seemed like a good idea to me, especially when you are learning. For me, I don't take that smallest core. I had too many that I never got around to turning.... The laser light is an excellent addition.

Mike... Thanks for the great demo. I just got my new toy for Christmas. I have one question. Can you change the profile of the bowls that are cut out or are all of the cored bowls always the same profile which appears to be pretty much a half circle? Thanks - Vern
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt 16 күн бұрын
Thanks Vern ... the shape is virtually the same each time, however a shallower cut set up changes it a bit. Hope this helps. Cheers. Mike

Nice tool. Couple of questions. You now have 5 bowls. How would you mount those bowls to finish the with like sanding. Secondly, how would you go about trimming the bowls after it dried? No tenon or recess on them. How will you get a tenon or recess on those bowls?
@dougbennett1275
@dougbennett1275 Жыл бұрын
That's the point I made. Woodcut have changed the order of cutting bowls to smallest to largest and that method doesn't allow any mortise or tenon to be formed.
@MikeWaldt

Good vid. What kind of cutter and is it replaceable? Thanks, Lee
@woodcuttoolsnz
@woodcuttoolsnz Жыл бұрын
Hi Lee Thanks for your question. The cutter is Stellite and I will post the story behind this very carefully chosen material for our Bowlsaver cutters. Yes, the Stellite tip can be replaced, however it would take a lot of cored bowls before this would be required. STELLITE CUTTERS: While bowl coring the cutter will probably need to withstand shocks caused by knots and defects in the wood. To minimise sanding the turner will also want to produce an excellent finish off the tool. Given the wide range of cutter options available, including Carbide, Woodcut Tools researched what cutters worked well in sawmill operations. We established that Stellite was commonly used for saw tipped bandsaws and recognised for the unique ability to withstand shocks from knots, stones and nails in the wood. Proven on hard and soft woods also delivering an excellent wood finish and experience a long operational life with great wear resistance. The Stellite cutter can be hollow ground. Each Bowlsaver blade includes a Stellite cutter. Do not hesitate to contact us support@woodcut-tools.com, should you have any further questions.

Do you have to hold the blade down? or is that just the comfortable spot for your left hand? Two cuts and already needing re sharpened? is there a Carbide option for the cutter?
@MikeWaldt
@MikeWaldt Жыл бұрын
I like to hold the blade, just lightly, to reduce the chance of judder. As I explained you don't need to actually sharpening just raise the burr with a diamond hone. Cheers. Mike.
