Watching this series has done a coupla things for me. Brought back those headaches of dealing with the exact "challenges" you're encountering that caused me to STOP working on my '93 ZJ outta frustration, and NOW I'm excited all over again to finish my lift!!! Poor ZJ, waiting all those years for me to get 'er dun!!! I was gonna go your exact route-the front spring swap to the rear and the Rough Country 4" front springs and other bits. I even bought and installed adjustable control arms AND track bars. Now I'm thinkin' (a very dangerous problem!) of long arms!! Thanks for reinvigorating me!!!

the price on amazon changes because when you add a good deal to your cart, the seller that had the good deal sold out and amazon automatically changes your shopping cart to the next seller. but sometimes if you wait a few days the price goes back to what it was when the seller (with a good deal) gets them back in stock

Don't fear the ratchet strap technique, just don't do it like Matt did! =D When I installed 2.25'' coil spring spacers on my 98 ZJ, I used two ratchet straps in tandem in an opposed fashion. The straps stayed on their respective side and did not cross (horizontally) from one side to the other. I did a single wrap around the bar of the coil itself at both ends of the strap before placing the hooks at opposite ends(lengthwise) of the spring, leaving the ratchets at about midway. The straps would not move at all under load, the wrap would simply tighten around the bar at either end. This was a solid technique as the stored energy could not be released by the spring as the two strap system was redundant and nearly immovable on the coil itself. I look forward to more of these videos, as I have a ZJ and I wont have to constantly modify some of your XJ info for my rig! =) I am a novice DIY jeep wrencher (mine only) so use my advice at your own risk. I have watched tons of BleepinJeep videos and have had great results following your crew's instructables and thank you all greatly!

with stock/clevite arm bushings, the easiest way to get front springs out is to unbolt the sway bar, unbolt the top or bottom of the shock, loosen (not necessary to remove) the axle side of the trackbar and all control arm bolts. then jack up the passenger side first and remove the driver side spring then jack up the driver side and remove the passenger side spring. the rear is the same except you jack up the driver's side first and go from there. I did this to remove 4 inch springs on my tj. you were correct in that the bushings are binding. if you have Johnny joints, duroflex, or heim joints you don't have to loosen the arm bolts. hope this helps!

I think it's fair that you charge your craiglist price for whatever you have in the garage if it is jeep parts, otherwise I suppose that you could use some pretty fancy stuff that may be around your workshop. As per getting the taller front springs in.... loosen the pivot points at the control arms, where all the bushings are.. both sides... the chassis side, and the axle side... the axle will drop way down, and you can simply just slide the front springs on the upper mounting horns/bump/snubber mounts... You may need to go a couple extra notches higher on the jack stands, as well as the shocks being disconnected either top or bottom... worked for me, any how... Just keep an eye on the pitman arm tie-rod end/draglink end.. or just to be simple, pop it out of the pitman arm... as the limit of down travel is much more then the pivot angle that the drag link can go, like wise with the track bar, on the chassis (unified body member).. no need to remove any of the hardware of the control arms,, just loosen them a turn or two. then you only need to keep an eye on the brake lines from being over extended, or remove the calipers, and hang'em on some "S-Hook" on the access hole for the upper control arm chassis side, oval hole.... reassembly... get one shock attached at a time, then you can let the axle hang on the shocks, until you finish the rest of the re-assembly... my 2 cents

I don't know well this would work on a ZJ, but you can get basically new stock JK shocks for all 4 corners for $50 on ebay. They're good on XJs with 3-4 inches of lift. A bit stiff but I bet they'd be great on a ZJ if they're long enough
@adammorin814

As for the bumper we always used to just pull the fender liner out and use a Dremel and trim off some of the bumper and that would usually give you all the room you need it there. As for room needed by the door, I suppose you could take a grinder or Sawzall or what have you and start hacking into the fender and side skirt but I would try to avoid the side skirt at all costs is right underneath it is the actual body. Whatever you do just started spraying the hell out of the bottom of that thing with bed liner or underbody coating whichever 10 is cheaper cuz it's the same shit, because it sounds like you're going to be doing some serious stuff with this. And thank you so so so very much for the shock mount relocation idea! I don't know why I didn't think of that sooner! I am buying some decent Factory replacement shocks at the auto parts store online with a discount code and putting those on with the 2 inch lift that I have instead of The aftermarket shocks they sell that are worse than the factory ones! If at all possible I try to retain Factory ride quality or close to it. as for the front control arms I was thinking about possibly cutting them and Welding in some square steel to give them the correct length so the axle will be pointing the correct direction again. if you read any of these comments let me know what you think of my thesis here, thank you and keep up the good and cheap work! God bless take care and support the Second Amendment!

The troubles with the spring.... I can relate SO MUCH. If that was me though I wouldn't have the second jack and would have to run to a store for the XX time to get another part to complete the job. The problems with removal of the rear track bar also along with the head aches I get with my 98 zj inline-6. $$ -- Next, Lockers! and Pinion angles set to match the big increase in lift. Lockers because with the AWD the limited slip differentials likely not maintained well. If at the least might check the clutch pack on the limited slips diffs.

I'm worried about the rear track. I would get that fixed first. I won't matter how cheap it is, if it doesn't go strait. Also this is the cheap jeep. I think we should able to add money to a pool per-month. Some amount that people could save each month. Do a poll on your site asking how much could you actually spend, and do it each month so it's a little more realistic for how people budget for mods.

I've heard that on WJ's the rear sway-bar helps cut down on death wobble. I was watching a build of one and they upgraded the rear sway-bar to a thicker one and it eliminated the death wobble. Not sure what would happen if you got rid of it completely. Generally it's control arms and track bars that induce death wobble, but I don't know, that's what the people doing the build said.

It's easier to hold the shock nut with vise grips and block it from moving while twisting the top of the shock underneath. It's better than dicking around with the master cylinder if you don't need to. Just make sure the shock cover isn't disintegrated like those rear ones.

for the front springs: put a block of wood under the floor jack and lift it as high as it can go, then maybe lift it more if needed with the other floor jack and more wood. then, jack stands and wood. completely drop the front axle, mount springs, and lower the car as needed. really dangerous, but it could work.

We've been using ratchet straps to secure compressed coils springs for years. (Jack up the corner and compress the spring, secure it with a couple ratchet straps, then lower the corner. Spring falls out.) Works fine if you're doing a budget boost (coil spacers) since you're putting the compressed coil back in. I wouldn't try to remove those ratchet straps from the compressed spring outside the vehicle. So for all of you guys saying how dangerous it is...just chill. If you're going to stand on your soapbox and wax rhetoric about this, can we safely assume you don't do ANYTHING AT ALL REMOTELY DANGEROUS?

For the track bar, I have redrilled the mounting hole on the axle. Not ideal but this is a cheap Jeep. We usually drilled over 3/4 inch for a 3 inch lift. This was on the front of an xj. Also I think you don't get the same lift off the front springs if the zj is a 4.0l. Looking forward to seeing how this survives off road. These are getting cheaper than xi's here in the Northwest.

Love the Vid Matt. Def can't wait to see more. There is a vacuum box behind that front bumper on the drivers side that will need to be moved to give more clearance. They make a stock skid plates for the radiator, transfer case, and I believe the gas tank. You might find some at the junkyard for cheap. That's cheap insurance so you don't ruin anything. The 5.2 rear seal is a shitty one. You'll need to take the stud for the starter out to get the oil pan off which can be a pain. If you need anything, just ask. Thanks!

lockers and tires would go a long way for the next upgrade. Lots of take off wheels/tires from newer jeeps on craigslist although the wheels are 5x5 instead of 5x4.5 like the zj a set of adapters isn't a terrible idea to get some backspacing. I routinely see JK rubicon wheels/tires set of 4 or 5 even for like $500. that's a 32" ish inch bfg km2 tire and a nice 17" aluminum wheel. Not sure what the budget looks like but a set of adapters may be $65 or so. For lockers, lunchboxes would be nice and quick at about $250 each and no cost to re-set gears, or you can lincoln/miller/harborfrieght lock them for dirt cheap. A V8 ZJ on 32ish inch tires locked front and rear will be pretty capable, weld in so 2x3" box where the rocker guards are and beat the crap out of it.

I'm enjoying the video, especially how you keep in the 'whoops' moments so the rest of can learn from a mistake. If you need a spring compressor check out Advanced Auto (If they are in your area) they have a free tool loaner program (you pay a deposit for the tool and get it back when you return the tool) that should help with the budget.

I just extended my front track bar in my MJ with some 1" sched40 pipe. You could maybe do something similar with that rear track bar to keep the axle centered?

Oh, and I just put those RE 5.5"Coils in my MJ last week, they are pretty stout, so a spring compressor is a must!

when I did my lift I didn't need a spring compressor. I used my buddy's lift

Are you planning to do any work to the fuel system? Like drop the tank to clean it and change the sock filter? I want to cut an access panel in my 98 zj for convenience to do this without dropping the tank should the pump quit on the trail. Should be a very cheap bit of preventative maintenance.

I feel your pain. I did 2.5" budget boost on my orvis with proper spring compressors and holy shit was that a huge pain in the ass!!

weld the rear diff, ita a requirement on a cheap wheeler. and i think part of my budget would be going towards finding a way to extend those links, poly bushings from tmr and 2x2 1/4" wall square tubing even. no point in all that lift when it moves the tire so close to the rockers that you still cant go to a bigger tire

Far as I'm concerned, if the shocks were laying around the garage whether or not you're asking money on craigslist for them you should not charge those to the budget. You aren't going to charge for consumables or misc. materials used from your garage are you? Either way I like how you're keeping it honest.

+DERICK CLUTE I get what you're saying but suppose I had a 14 bolt and a Dana 60 and a hemi and An atlas and some 43" stickies laying around on the floor and I install those and then told everybody you could build the same jeep for $1500.

I was going to post something similar to Derick. Shocks are significantly different then a 14bolt... I'm not really a 4x4 guy (why do I watch your channel? ;-) I would be if there was a good place to go wheeling around here anymore, what was here 10-20years ago is all gone and private now with construction/development, and I've built plenty of stuff like that... 4x4 guys tend to build more of their own stuff than "racecar" guys so I tend to watch 4x4 stuff), but even I have a stack of shocks in the corner of the garage. Even if that wasn't the case you could have moved the top bracket or extended the bottom for free (maybe some steel scrap and welding wire). You're already on a really tight budget, I didn't see the original pole but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of people that voted for a $3K budget figured that it was $3K worth of mods to it, not including the jeep (I'm betting a lot of the people that wanted this already have the jeep/were given one from parents...). I really don't think that anyone will look at you funny for using a set of shocks that if you (or I) wasn't a hoarder would have been trash a while ago. The place where I would buy the argument the other way is that you and I have the ability to fabricate parts that a lot of your audience probably doesn't so we'd save money there that they couldn't.

Oh, and still not really a 4x4 guy ;-) but I do have a dana 60, a beefy trans/transfer case and no 43's but I do have some 36" Nittos in the basement... I wouldn't consider those fair game... Well maybe the nittos, I've put those on Craigs list a few times for really cheap and never got any bites at all.

It's a jeep, you know. Everything you'll want or need to get at is under, wrapped around, behind, or covered by parts you'll most likely never need to touch otherwise. Goooooooo Chrysler engineers!!!!!!!!! >.>

If you remove all your shocks and track bar and everything off of the front axle the actual will drop far enough for you to pop the spring out without a compressor
