He was what was called, in those days (the 1960's), "Beatniks". They were into folk music and might best be understood as the precursor of the hippies of the 1970's.

Yes. Dobie and Maynard were based from Archie and Jughead, and later, Shaggy was based from Maynard/Beatniks and Scooby-Doo was a term used by the Beats in the 40s and 50s that was the equivalent of 'cool'.
@jeffburns421919 күн бұрын
@@chrisreese7142 The Dobie Gillis television show was based on a series of Dobie Gillis short stories beginning in 1945 and written by Max Shulman as well as on a 1953 movie adaption of the Dobie Gillis stories called “The Affairs of Dobie Gillis”.

Pretty much everything about Maynard was actual. Those were the precise type of beards Beatniks wore, so too the clothing, the aversion to work, the interest in jazz, and playing the bongoes. Doom was also a big subject for the Beats.

This is such an interesting piece of culture, far more informative of the larger culture's fascination with a fictional, stylized stereotype of 'beatniks,' than of the actual Beat generation. Those commenting thinking that Maynard is an accurate representation of anything 'Beat' are way off the mark. The Beatnik stereotype was a fiction.
@iboarshock70598 жыл бұрын
+Phorestpsy As is the 'hippie' stereotype of counter-culture from a few years later.
@TheUSSHouston7 жыл бұрын
In 20 years people will claim Hippies never really existed. Beatnik, a term combining Beat (music) and nik (a play on the Russian suffix nik meaning a thing or person associated) was used to describe musicians, artist, poets and writers who lived mostly in California and New York and were generally unemployed. Many were college students. Goatees, sunglasses and bongos were a common theme. Allen Ginsberg, an anti-capitalist and Buddhist, was one of the most famous of the Beatniks. Saying the Beat stereotype was a fiction is a lot like saying not all Goths dress in Black. The character of Maynard actually made beatniks likeable to many who saw them as a lazy lower class.

mitchell colen - The beats did not have beards, as a rule, although some may have. They were individuals with individual preferences, like everyone else. Krebs is not at all representative of the beat generation. They were intellectuals, for the most part. I suppose he was a wannabe beat. Addendum: I just noticed that Geoffrey Nunberg describes Krebs as a “beatnik wannabe” in his book, “Going Nucular.” There is a section on the word “like” in that book.
