The current Downhill Mountain Bike World Champion, Loic Bruni, is interviewing the rider of his choice at each World Cup DH round in 2019 for his Outspoken series with Vital MTB. Episode two features the Greatest Of All Time, Greg Minnaar. Following a horrific start to the season in Maribor, where Greg failed to qualify for race day (a career first), he sits down with Loic to discuss all aspects of mountain bike racing. Career longevity, bike tech like 29ers in downhill, being on the Santa Cruz Syndicate with Steve Peat, Nathan Rennie and Josh Bryceland, the boredom of training and even the art of crying are touched on. When the person conducting the interview knows the elite-level stresses and struggles as well as the subject, incredible insight is the result.

Loic I have to complain to your management. Your too nice 👍🏻😆 in a nice way of course. X games mentality I call it. They congratulate each other when they win. They know each other is not the enemy it’s the discipline they are in. It’s the track. The jump. The rock garden. Etc. being a prick to your team mates and other athletes will not help you. There’s a bit of a wall here between these two. You can feel it.

3:15 Watch the difference between these two generations. Bruni asking this question already shows it but even more so when he doesn't really seem to understand what Greg is explaining. A decade and longer ago there was much less ego. Less rivalry. Riders were honestly excited about another rider's performances. Nowadays it feels like it's much more individually, egocentric based. Trying to sell themselves like soda brands. Who has more followers? Who can get the most views on yt? Liked it better before

Man those interviews are awesome. And I start to feel old, I still remember the times when Minaar bombed the dual with a orange, or the Honda Team. Cant believe he still going and so cool. I want to be like him when I am 37. And.. Am I correct in that Minaar was once called "fresh prince of air" back in the Honda days?

Interviews between two athletes are just better than with a journalist that dreamt of riding WC or whatever. The questions are very different. Another good example of this is the interview of Cerdic Gracia with the WRC driver Kris Meeke: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eH6ldpyVlsSVnsU

Greg - don't fall into the trap of believing what Red Bull say about what looks good on camera and don't underestimate the audience. Slow awkward tech if explained well can look incredible and it makes the difference between the riders obvious to see. Nobody wants to watch Leogang Motorway in full unless different styles are on show. Educate the audience instead of playing down to what you think they want to see (speed, jumps, etc) I think you'll be surprised.

TBH Specialized Gravity is a bit like Loic's team. Won't be surprinsing to see Finn left it in few years, as the same thing happened with Loris in the past. It's difficult to live in Loic's shadow I guess.
