People amaze me why they don't learn from the pass,good luck during a big Earthquake and or Tsunami,you will never see me living on a beach like that. And the tall buildings on the shore will go down,because the sand under them will turn into quicksand during a Earthquake. Sounds like a Disneyland commercial for the simply minded, and or arrogant.

@TheRightThinker ur right about everything but you r forgetting one major thing: Dubai is a city/state. It doesn't matter if Dubai is in debt as long as Abu Dhabi has there back. And also not 'all' of the water comes from desalination plants, there are some water reseviours (mind my spelling) around the whole country and thats how the people there were surviving before the economic boom (and even though desalination is expensive, it is not as negative as you portray it).

I have to say that Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum must be among the greatest leaders to exist in the Islamic world. His majesty is one exceptionally talented leader to terraform a baron landscape into a mega-metropolis! The Islamic world should be proud of Sheik Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum for exceptional urban craftsmanship! I'll even say that his majesty is my favorite Middle Eastern leader.

A very nice computer rendered video, but the truth is that only one island has a permanent structure and the rest remain empty and unwanted. To make matters worse, Dubai's Palm projects have changed the offshore currents to the point that the water between the World islands has sat dormant and gone bad.
@fruchtfleisch13 жыл бұрын

@soori2013 жыл бұрын
For those saying "ZOMG what if a tsunami comes"... Without risk you cannot succeed. Did the USA stop building after they were hit by the hurricanes? Did Japan stop simply evacuate after the earthquakes? Obviously people have to take in the natural factors but that wouldn't stop them from achieving 'the best'. Furthermore, UAE is really far from any fault lines so its highly unlikely that an earthquake thats big enough to cause a tsunami will reach it. Thank you.

The "ringleaders" were imprisoned. I try a different question: does Sohinal regret coming? All the men look down, awkwardly. "How can we think about that? We are trapped. If we start to think about regrets..." He lets the sentence trail off. Eventually, another worker breaks the silence by adding: "I miss my country, my family and my land. We can grow food in Bangladesh. Here, nothing grows. Just oil and buildings."

@soori20 desalination is more expensive than oil if the same quantity is being produced. However, the UAE (mainly Abu Dhabi) is selling a shit load of oil compared to the production of water and therefore, this won't necessarily be impossible to sustain.
@TheLonePantheist12 жыл бұрын
Actually, Dubai's economy is booming, and Dubai gets most of its money from Tourism and real estate. It is similar to what we Americans did with Las Vegas, a land with absolutely nothing, yet we made it into a tourist hotspot where water and food can be imported from all over the world with revenues from the tourism, it is the same with Dubai. The days of the middle east being solely dependent on oil is coming (SLOWLY)to an end.

@spandexballet I'm sure NY, LA and Chicago has more to offer then skyscrapers. Dubai does not. That was my point, which apparently you didn't get. I got no beef with skyscrapers. The reason for building skyscrapers is quite apparent. But that's not the case in Dubai. There they build them to impress, and in reality they have no function but to draw attantion and tourists.

"As of 2010, only a single island has any building on it, which is a show home - all the other projects having been cancelled or delayed due to the 2008 financial crisis.[2] While the developer and Dubai government deny it, a participant in a related law suit has alleged that the islands are also sinking back into the sea.[2]"

Sounds like a scary place to live Sahinal Monir wrote ""To get you here, they tell you Dubai is heaven. Then you get here and realize it is hell. As soon as he arrived at Dubai airport, his passport was taken from him by his construction company. He has not seen it since." "If you don't like it, the company told him, go home. "But how can I go home? You have my passport, and I have no money for the ticket," he said. "Well, then you'd better get to work," they replied.

I wanted to understand how the government of Dubai will react, so I decided to look at how it has dealt with an environmental problem that already exists - the pollution of its beaches. an American, working at one of the big hotels - had written in a lot of online forums arguing that it was bad and getting worse, so I called her to arrange a meeting

@PrincessAlleyne There are really two things wrong with this. 1. The serious human rights issues and mistreatment of foreign workers 2. The vast investment in real estate and construction where there is no demand for it. Dubai is a city of only 2 million people. It cannot support a skyline like that of NY or Chicago. It might have looked good at first, but when the bubble burst, you sort of realize that investing your wealth in cardboard houses and empty steel frames isn't a good idea.
