That's not brakes that's the wheel flanges rubbing on the rails that train was west bound up hill east bound is down hill

I can remember seeing the 1361 on display in the early 80's. I always enjoyed spending time there

Civil Engineers thought it through in a simple form, MILW did this tactic in Washington State.

The grade gets steeper after the curve and reaches the summit around the tunnels.
