The World Has a Receipt Problem

The receipts you take home from the store - or stuff in your bag, or lose in your car -- employ a printing method that’s been around since the 1970s. Thermal printing involves heat-sensitive inks called leuco dyes that show up when they react with an acid developer embedded in the paper.
Not only do these inks fade easily, but receipts that use them aren’t recyclable, and could even be dangerous to your health.
Taking a cue from a failed experiment, scientists are developing a new kind of receipt paper that will use the same thermal printers without leuco dyes. Instead of acid developers, this paper is coated in reflective microspheres that collapse under heat, allowing regular ink underneath to show through.

This definitely seems like an unnecessary solution to a bigger problem. We should be trying to get digital receipts as the standard not green washing a wasteful practice.

Interesting. Why wouldn’t everyone go for digital receipts instead, without upgrading any of their equipment?

Because it's way more convienent to to just have physcial receips, if digital receipt was a thing how would people receve it, or/and why would they keep it? It would just be stored on their phone or device and you would get so many receips just piling up.

I tiled out receipts and made paper tubes which I will use to make coasters

Wait how hot a car does it take to erase receipts I somehow cared enough to need printed rather than captured on CashApp or Robinhood or maybe PayPal? Just Cali. sun ☀️? But I get a plastiPaper that recycles, ♻️ really? (That is, no estrogenic plastic thermal papers that don't recycle.)
