Full discussion: “Understanding How the Mind Works: The Neuroscience of Perception, Behavior, and Creativity” goo.gl/8M0JxQ by Claudia Feitosa-Santana. Video description: It’s scary to realize that our senses cannot interpret reality. The world is an illusion. Illusion is: deception of the senses, changing the actual appearance for a fake one. Ebbinghaus Illusion: even though the central circles are the same, we cannot interpret reality and we see the two circles as different. So: we perceive differences where they do not exist! Another example: If you are seeing me on your mobile screen, my head has 1 inch in size. If you are watching me on a giant TV screen, my head will appear to you as having about 25 inches. But you still perceive my head as having the size of yours. So: we do not perceive differences where they exist! This mechanism exists to bring stability to our lives. So the world is not only an illusion but also a necessary illusion. It happens all the time! We all create a world in common and that’s the reason we probably create together this so-called illusion that we perceive as reality, when in fact that reality is just a point of view - shared by all of us, but there are other perceptions that are modified by our experience. So, my reality depends on my experience and your reality depends on yours. The price of things: two individuals working downtown need to take the subway on a daily basis. One makes a $10,000 a year and the other makes $100,000 a year. Any change in price will be perceived by the one making $10,000 10 times more than the other. We see as we think, and we think through comparisons. Our reality is always relative. We believe that what we see is what it is, but is only a point of view - sometimes shared by many and sometimes shared by only a few or none. And what do we need to do? We need to learn each other’s experiences so that we can understand each other’s reality, and without this effort there is little possibility of mutual understanding.
