That was one of the most gripping things about Howards' work. The Hyborian Age was entirely plausible. It made you wonder if he was Imagining his work, or channeling a forgotten History.

I read somewhere the setting for Conan's stories was supposed to be in a forgotten Ice Age, but Robert didn't have the resources at the time to study the era enough to make it plausible, so he settled on a kind of high middle ages instead, but I still think it worked.

I can't remember where I read this, but I originally heard Howard's three "states" of culture were described as Barbarism, Civilization, and Decadence. In cultures in the Barbarism stage, life can be nasty, brutish, and short, but its members also tend to be the most vigorous and daring. Cultures in the Decadence stage may have the most luxury and stability, but tend to slide ever deeper into stagnant, arrogant, apathy- until they become easy pickings for someone (like say, a Barbarian) who doesn't care about their "rules" and is strong enough to get away with it. Civilization is the most desirable state, where plenty of the old Barbarian energy remains, but it is now governed by reason and morality. The problem with Civilization is that can never seem to escape the trend of "Strong men create good times, good times create weak men" and it eventually slides into Decadence. Civilization defeats Barbarism, Barbarism defeats Decadence, Decadence defeats Civilization. Conan, as a super-barbarian wandering an utterly decadent Hyborian world, is basically a human "rock", while everyone around him is "scissors".

@conanthebarbarianofficial Ай бұрын
This is definitely the core of Howard's philosophy! He definitely loved playing with the idea that societies become too decadent then need some barbarians to bring things back down to what he believes the way things should be. His famous quote says it best “Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph.” - Robert E. Howard

@conanthebarbarianofficial I greatly respect Mr Howard, but I MUST disagree. It is by keeping Animal-Man and Thinking-Man in balance, within every human being, every society, that we can have the greatest collective achievements. The hyper-barbarians are unique, solitary creatures, Nietzschean OverMen. It is a good path for individual superior men, but not achievable or practical for most. For the majority, you need good values to take root, in order to extend the lifespan of Civilization, keep Decadence at bay for as long as possible, and prevent Barbarism from ruining too much, when its turn comes.

Just found this channel a few days ago, and immediately subscribed. I've been a Conan / REH fan since discovering the Savage Sword mag growing up in the 70's. Glad you mentioned the "possible Americas to the West". I have long wanted an author to have Conan set sail and accidentally wind up on the Eastern coast of the NA continent. What magnificent tales shall be told there...

Back in the 90s, after reading Conan of the Isles, I wondered the same thing. As nothing was written, I did my own research and wrote down an outline of possible events. Enjoy 😉 Of The Western Continent The Western Continent during the time of Conan is an ancient version of what we now know of as the Canada and North and South America. A lesser Cataclysm is still to come, that will turn the giant land mass into what we see today. During Conan's time, the Bering Strait is a large patch of mountains connecting the Hyborian Continent with the Western Continent. There is also a large patch of land at the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean Sea, connecting the North and Southern lands. In the Southern part of the Western Continent, the Olmec Empire was in its early stages. They were slowly expanding. They conquered, enslaved and absorbed the savage tribes that surrounded their kingdom. To the far North, a last remnant of the ancient Serpent Empire was still in hiding. Preparing to conquer humanity and reclaim the world for their dark gods. Farther North, the Tol and Az-Tekah tribes had just made their way over the Bering Strait mountain range. They had escaped a Nameless Horror from the far Western land. Both people were wandering tribes. They warred with each other at times as they went South searching for a place to settle. After a few adventures, the former King Conan reaches the Western Continent. He comes in contact with the Az-Tekah people. He gets mixed up in their wars with the Tol tribes and Olmec Empire. The wars take him North where he learns of a weapon held by the Serpent-men, that can be used against them and their dark gods. I should also mention, that the Serpent Empire is connected to the same leftover Serpent-men we see in Howard's The Valley of the Lost.

Howard states in one of his letters that he imagines after Conan is bored of being King, he sets sail to the west to adventure in what would be the "American" continent. What I love about Robert E Howard's prose and world building is that his Hyborean Age is a lost antiquity. Not a generic European medieval fantasy world. It is a world of African, Persian and even Chinese type nations. Whay is more, the histories of each fictional nation is complex.

It's even more amazing when you consider that Howard had no formal training as a writer, nor did he have easy access to information. He grew up and lived in a small Texas town and had to make do with whatever local books he could get his hands on. Much of his knowledge came from pulp fiction magazines of the era.

Most just write it off to a few sentences, and then go on to Conan. Howard's works are ALL interlinked in one way or another. They remind me a bit of Michael Moorcock's "Eternal Champion Cycle" in that, often veiled, he someti,es implied that his Heros were the same soul, reincarnated in times of need (or that might just be my imagination). Great video, and I hope to see many more from you.

The second cataclysm sounds like the younger dryas theory. While Howard took inspiration from ancient stories of such events happening in so many different cultures, it makes me wonder if it was just inspiration or something deeper. Like a DNA memory of what happened (if it did) and that's why he was able to craft such a detailed world. Same with Tolkien. Food for thought.

Yep, the Younger Dryas had been discovered in the early 1900s and almost immediately there were people (especially in occult and esoteric circles) speculating about lost civilizations during the warm interglacial between the end of the last real ice age and the brief freeze of the Younger Dryas. Howard likely got the idea from one of these sources.

The Lumurians actually came from the sea? Like in a potential Lovecraftian Deep Ones connection? Did I miss that detail in the Hyborian Age? I wonder how Asain readers feel about that ancestry, even with generations of integrating with human main-landers. Good summery, though there's much room to expand this further with Ape men and Serpent men and national parallels. Speaking of the last; pretty sure Aquilonia is centered more around France then Britian. Britain is more around Cimmeria and the Pictish Wilds, though much of that floods away to make them isles.
@conanthebarbarianofficial
@conanthebarbarianofficial Ай бұрын
Yes exactly! The Howard was very likely playing with that very idea from Lovecraft. You point out a very valid and difficult thing that sometimes comes up with writers from that era, that they were playing sometimes make some... problematic connections with race. But its better to acknowledge it and recognize it for what it is than sweep it under the rug. And you're right that Aquilonia has a lot of French influence. In our discussions with Jeff he kind of mentioned that it's supposed to be a "generic medieval western europe" feel.

The Lemurians evolving from fish men is not from the Hyborian Age. It comes from the Bran Mak Morn story "Men of the Shadows." And yes, unfortunately Howard was a product of his time and he was heavily influenced by the (now-discredited) racialist anthropology of his day. This colored his thinking even when it came to fictional "races" like the Lemurians.

@@AnAgeUndreamedOf Ahh, and I have read that one, but I forgot that detail. Interesting there's important details like that covered by a historian character in singular stories, but not in the Hyborian essay he wrote to keep track of things. Maybe that's a detail he forgot he had included before, or the historian (shaman?) was incorrect, or the essay just isn't all inclusive - after all it says nothing about the Serpent men either, and that's pretty important history, but something he keeps in the shadows, even to himself perhaps, and just writes on a whim - we don't even hear anything about Kull's crusade to purge them in the later stories. As for casual racism, yeah no doubt it flavored him with stereotypes, but at least, from what I've read he seems make all ethnicities have the capacity to be horrible or good. I don't think I'd mind being _distantly_ related to fishy fish people, we all come from fish originally after all. I have more Lovecraft to read before my final word on that matter though.🧟🧜‍♂

We hope to do another podcast episode with Jeff Shanks about this but there are many clues in Howard's other works that point toward what the Lemurians were like. Fear not however, much of it is worthy of solo lore videos in the future!

It comes from the Bran Mak Morn story "Men of the Shadows": “Far to the west, across the roaming waves, lay the vast, dim land of Lemuria. And anon came fleets of canoes bearing strange raiders, the half-human Men of the Sea. Perhaps from some strange sea-monster had those sprung, for they were scaly like unto a shark and they could swim for hours under the water." This was early on though. By the time of Kull they pretty much looked fully human except for large eyes and a small protuberance in their forehead.

I was looking for a video like this a week ago, somehow I didn't see it till now. But I did find a guy who thought that the Conan stories were real, and that art deco buildings and star shaped forts were from a "lost civilization" prior to our. Thanks for not being a nut job.

I think Robert E Howard’s place in Texas, on the edge of wildernesses but within a new civilisation establishing itself in a wild land must have given him immense inspiration, but only interpreted by his visionary soul! Thrilling video! Perhaps you could do some biographies of the major and minor characters!

Even if i know almost all of them, I would like another video on each hyborian realm/region. Howard work always feel so fresh in is simplicity, yet diversified. Much better than the more pulp overexaggeration of Clark Ashton Smith and the likes.

whenever I read Conan it strike as showing a possible past which is entirely possible to have happened and the fact that Robert was thinking of making Conan fictional history at first, is a missed opportunity in my opinion.

Ok, you got me! I have Liked and Subscribed! I've been a total nerd about R.E. Howard since the late 70s, and I'm not sure I agree with everything presented here, but I love it anyway. Future videos? One of my favourite Conan stories involved his interaction with the Aesir and the Vanir, and it's not too difficult to figure out who those people were. 🙂

One thing that influenced Robert E Howard's writing of Conan- The city of Rome had become decadent. More power was held in Constantinople, the Eastern Roman capitol. The people of Italy became dependent on the French(Franks) for trade. The Barbarian German tribes(Goths) ran Rome's military. About 450 AD Attila the Hun threatened Rome but was paid off in gold. In 476 AD Rome was sacked and overthrown by the Barbarian Goths. The year 500 AD was the lowest point of the Iron age of Darkness.

What reading order should I go with?
@AnAgeUndreamedOf
@AnAgeUndreamedOf Ай бұрын
Howard wrote the stories out of chronological order, so it's really okay to start anywhere. But personally I prefer to read them in the order they were written, which is how they are in the 3 volume Del Rey set. But if you just to jump in and get a feel for it, I recommend starting with "Tower of the Elephant"
