The Leubing tumulus was excavated in 1877 by Friedrich Klopfleisch and documented in an exemplary manner for the time. To this day, it is one of the most important graves of the early Bronze Age. Inside the grave mound, a man lying on his back was discovered with rich grave goods. What objects were given to the dead man in the grave? What special features do they have and what do they indicate?
Museum director Harald Meller answers these and other questions in this episode of "Museum exklusiv". As part of a short guided tour, this archaeological highlight is illustrated by the exhibits of the state exhibition "The World of the Nebra Sky Disc - New Horizons" on display at the State Museum of Prehistory in Halle (Saale), Germany.
From June 4th, 2021 to January 9th, 2022, the State Museum of Prehistory Halle (Saale) will show the major state exhibition "The World of the Nebra Sky Disc - New Horizons". We present the research results about the Sky Disc from the past 20 years in a unique combination of natural sciences, archaeology, social theory, and art. New finds and findings from Saxony-Anhalt are supplemented by high-ranking objects, some of which have never been shown in Germany before, from over 50 lenders from 14 countries, and staged in a tried and tested exclusive design. These include, for example, the Mold Gold Cape (Wales), the Golden Hat of Schifferstadt, and rich grave finds from Mycenae. The objects span a period of 1,400 years of human history and illustrate the wealth and diversity of an era that is closer to us today than we previously suspected. The state exhibition is under the patronage of the Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and was created in cooperation with the British Museum, London.
With the series "Museum exklusiv" we invite you on a tour of the State Museum, present archaeological finds of worldwide significance, tell stories about the lives of our ancestors and take a look behind the scenes of the spectacular stagings of the exhibition. Come along!
