Honestly when Clu-2 asked if he was to create the perfect system, Flynn shouldn't have answered affirmatively and awkwardly. He should have told him that the plan is changing. Be firm and stand your ground. You're the user, they're the program. Of course Clu-2 would have an issue with it, but it probably would have turned out much better this way.

I was shoked that Flynn couldn't design another CLU2 to fight for him, and keep creating better n better things to fight for him. Sure, that CLU couldn't conceive of what Flynn could. Or even his Son could even help to use up-to-date ideas from the 21st century

Tron Legacy was incredible. Quite fascinating to which we all try within deciphering its hidden imperious meaning. "The grid of Time takes all, though the mind will always wander amongst impressive valuable memories." Absolutely mental to how relevant Tron is in our modern messed up world today.
@visionary4787Ай бұрын
Tron is a fascinating tapestry of technology, philosophy, and storytelling that transcends mere entertainment. The evolution from the original 1982 film to the expansive universe we see today is nothing short of remarkable. It’s not just about light cycles and digital battles; it’s a profound commentary on creation, identity, and the consequences of unchecked ambition. Dr. Walter Gibbs’ quote about computers and programs thinking while people stop resonates deeply in our current AI-driven world. The isos, as a new life form, challenge our understanding of existence and freedom. Tron isn’t just a nostalgic trip; it’s a mirror reflecting our own digital age dilemmas.
@larrystouder-studenmund6489Күн бұрын
I'd agree, the concepts do seem to have taken on a timeless quality that I'm not sure could have been anticipated when the first movie was made, but aligns so well with so many of the issues we see arising today from our increasingly technological-focused world.

Grace Hopper invented the term "computer bug" when she literally found a moth jamming up the physical tubes and stuff of a NASA/DARPA computer project. EVERYTHING in Tron is a very nerdy reference. I've been learning computer science and it gets funnier and funnier every time I watch because I get more and more references. It's great. Anyway I enjoyed this thank you for posting it, you have great goofy energy and that's very pleasant. Too many super serious explainers of fun things like this. Thanks for keeping it light and silly.

It appears your “learning” is a bit off, starting with the fact DARPA didn’t exist at the claimed time of Hopper, 1947 (it was created in 1958). Do a little more digging into the “facts” you’re presented. Edison referred to a “bug” as far back as 1878, but that doesn’t fit your narrative, does it. 3 decades in tech, do better. Oh, NASA didn’t exist in 1947 either, its forerunner, NACA, did but it was aviation focused.

I remember taking my good friend, martial artist, and associate (R.I.P.) to see "Tron Legacy" in 3D. I thought it was a blast, and it fit well enough with the original's story and setup (loose as it had to be) to make it really fun. Seeing Boxleitner return was great, Olivia Wilde is wonderful as always (even though her character WAS merely posed as eye candy), and Bridges was clearly able to apply everything he'd learned as an actor over the decades beyond his initial appearance as "Flynn". And, as always, the graphical work pushed industry standards once again. Great stuff given the year. On that note, I didn't know about all the other projects (Evolution, Next Day, Uprising, etc.). No idea what those are like, of course.

Tidbit about Group 7 access. In Unix there are bits used to control access in Octal. Read Write and Execute usually. With an Octal bit 7 would be 111 for Read, Write, and Execute commands. Someone on the staff likely knew their Unix permissions and assumed that Group 7 access would be a pretty high access level. In reality it was likely a RACF profile simply called Group 7. I'd wager a guess as, going back to Unix Permissions, Group 7 was likely an aggregate of Business Line, Tester, Developer bits being all on. So someone who was Business Line and Developer but not tester might be a Group 5 user. Or a Business Line + Tester but not developer might be a Group 6 user. With Business Line being just Group 4.

Hot take incoming... The one offputting thing about Tron Legacy that made me not enjoy it completely was that I was expecting any Users to be more powerful than they actually were, Jedi like levels. They showed Kevin Flynn do a few manipulative things to the virtual world he was in, but that was just it, just minor stuff. Users create, they have that power, and they had THE creator of that specific virtual world there in the virtual world, and he really didn't do much. Was a bit of a disappointment for me.

In the original Tron the computer world was NOT called "the grid". It was instead referred to, repeatedly, as "the system". "The grid" was shorthand for _the game grid,_ a subsection of the system where rebellious programs were sent to play video games. The sequel screwed up this nomenclature, retconning "the grid" to refer to everything inside the computer.

His fixation on Rome is pretty common and often clouds people's view of history. One of the reasons it's hard to pin down the fall of Rome is because it had a bunch of ups and downs with huge changes. Kinda like how you have the old Monarch England, then have the colonial England which controlled much of the sea and had territories all over the world, then you have the modern England which is more a democracy with Monarch being more of figure heads. All 3 are still England but the ups and downs of each are a product of their times both in tech but also in global trade and diplomacy. Rome is the same as it had phases of expansion and decline. There was even a point where it split in two. So people will point to some decline that happen centuries before the final fall as a tipping point that lead to the inevitable decline. But it isn't really accurate as it's a bit like finding a body that had terminal cancer that was shot and then hit by a car. And you go people arguing the cancer or the shot made the person to weak to avoid the car and would have kill the person eventual without the car while others insist it was clearly the car that ultimately did them in. All 3 would have lead to death and it's just a matter of nitpicking. The problem with Rome fixation is it clouds history to the point that in the public consciousness there is the "Dark Ages" which isn't a real period in actual History circles. It was a term created by an author who romanticized Rome and when it fell considered it "Dark Ages" and people have built up this myth that technology and science regressed during this time which is not true. Progress marched onward during this period but because of the author's view he pretty much classified the period between Rome's fall and Renaissance which began to take a lot of inspiration from Rome as the "Dark Ages". Every time I hear in stories people talking about "Dark Ages" setting back our progress I gotta roll my eyes at the continue perpetuation of this myth.

Okay, but is Tron 2.0 canon? It's nice to see someone trying to pull all the pieces together and smooth out the rough patches, because as a kid raised on the original movie growing into an adult that had high hopes for the franchises continuation the Legacy movie was a bumpy ride of mixed feelings. The Revolution series did a lot to help repair the uneven feeling, but being shut down early and having no other movie announcement until recently really shook my faith in seeing any further developments or clarifications for the story going forward.

I think it is interesting that the movie took in Jeff Bridges "Buddhistly bent beliefs" and made Kevin and Clu form a sort of Yin Yang. An out of balance one. While Kevin is very adaptable and open minded, he is shown to be too passive and reactive. While Clu is rigid and unflinching, he is also very driven and proactive. And their shared fate is very reminiscent of another movie. The Dark Crystal. There, the Mystics and Skesis, shown in the end to be two parts of a whole, also are antagonistic until they come together at the end into a sort of ascension. Such an underappreciated movie.
