As a Canadian, here's how Trump's comments about Canada being the 51st state play: *crickets*. You guys are a population giant compared to us, we are inundated with your politics and pop culture but have managed to remain a distinct culture and independent country for hundred of years. Hey - Taylor Swift even ended the Eras Tour on Canadian soil! I think we'll be fine. But... if any of your blue states want join to us as provinces, we'd welcome you into our health care system!

Personal comment of Laura Botten: Yeah! Taylor at first snubbed Canada, then added Toronto, and then Vancouver! We're great and everyone just wants to be us ;) As the other reply says: the state that got away, that's actually literally how we were created. The British went "home" if the Americans promised to leave us alone. The Americans have been wanting our land since the beginning, but we hang onto the fact that we burnt the White House last time they tried it :D because we're never giving in! I've researched a lot of Canadian history and it never goes well for Americans who try to crush us.

@@TWE_2000 Personal comment of Laura Botten: The more I find out about the circumstances that lead to Trump, the more I see where the differences are. They are subtle, but they're there. Like the concept of Executive Orders and Commander in Chief. Even how we react to the "51st state" comment shows our cultural differences toward patriotism.
@TWE_2000
@TWE_2000 Ай бұрын
@@sunshineinn-office179 Subtlety kinda implies it's not THAT distinct. Realistically I think Canadian culture could be described as a couple subgroups of a broader North American culture, plus Quebec; hence the "ehhhh...." Also, didn't your prime minister unconstitutionally (according to Canadian courts) use the Emergencies Act to freeze hundreds of protestors' and gofundme supporters' bank accounts? I think Canadians are a little more familiar with the concepts of Commander in Chief and Executive Orders than you might give them credit for. Especially since in practice, that commander in chief is occasionally just the US president, at least in regards to NORAD and Canadian air space.

Canada has mixed reviews on Trump. Trudeau has dealt with him before, quite successfully. Its bizarre that Trump can flex, taunt, and ridicule Canada, but he can't enter Canada because of his criminal record. Brian Tyler Cohen gave a pretty accurate account of the Canadian POV, yesterday.

@@brianr6651technically he is still inadmissible. However because of his impending position he *may* be granted entry. Hey, I‘m German and always appreciate your analysis especially on the middle east! I just wanted to mention that saying the CDU is Merkels party, and not far right has become somewhat misleading over the past year or so. Merkel was always among the most moderate people in the CDU and actually actively pushed Merz out of the party. It‘s still unclear how this will go until febuary, but I think it would be good to have that in mind.

The treatment of the Kurds is one of the most shameful aspect of this entire saga. They have their own issues, but we completely abandoned them to fend off the ISIS resurgence. They are overseeing THOUSANDS of ISIS prisoners and camps of the families of “former” ISIS members. With little assistance from foreign allies who largely pulled out of Syria after the great ISIS threat was stamped out. I’m not sure what platform it was on (probably 60 minutes or frontline), but I watched a fascinating special on the Kurdish forces currently dealing with the aftermath of the collapse of ISIS.

He's got a great point when discussing what the U.S. should do with HTS and the designation. Lift the sanctions for a trial period of 90 days or so and then see how they are getting along in regards to inclusivity and overall governance. If they are dealing with problems of their own making like oppression of minorities, arbitrary arrest and justice, freeing ISIS terrorists, and fighting with their neighbors they can be told that they have not abided by our agreement so therefore we will slap the sanctions back on and refuse to recognize you as the legitimate government. Who knows, maybe we could've avoided what ended up happening in Afghanistan if we had been tougher and uncompromising with our stance and position on important reasons. If we are both conciliatory and tough in dealing with HTS I think everything might work out alright. We can only hope. Joel

On the whole, I think we might be more upset that Soto went to the Mets instead of the Jays. Trudeau has his own politics to worry about, and I don't know that he's in a very secure position. So, not going to meet with Trump also had some consequences for him.
