Ah, this video brings to mind one of the most interesting experiences of my year-long ramble of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. When I boarded a bus in Patras that was bound for Athens, I made sure the conductor saw that my ticket had me getting off in Corinth. I must have been the only passenger getting off there, and he seemed to have forgotten about me. I was beginning to wonder why I'd not reached Corinth, when the conductor came up to me, gesturing for my ticket. When he saw the destination, he yelled at the driver, who whipped into the parking lot of a small supermarket. The conductor shoved me out and I had to run alongside the bus to get it to stop again, so I could get my pack from underneath. "Where was I?," I wondered. Seeing a bridge, I walked out on it and discovered it spanned what this video is about, the Corinth Canal. I'd been dumped off at the only recognizable place on my entire trip. At least I wasn't lost. It was late at night, but I was prepared for anything. I walked up a side road a couple of hundred yards, found a field, and set up my tent. The next day dawned raining, so I stayed in the tent reading all day. The next day I hitched back to Corinth to see the ancient city.

As he mentioned, we Greeks wanted this canal for a long time. But since we knew it was an enormous task, we invented Diolkos (portage machine) instead. A kind of rails for ships to be moved over land. I'm talking about 600 BCE. The Diolkos combined the two principles of the railway and the overland transport of ships, on a scale that remained unique in antiquity. The Roman Emperor Nero tried again, way later, after Rome conquered Greece.

A pity it does not mention the "Diolkos", a specially made stone covered trackway, where the ancient Greeks would drag the ships and pass them to the other side. A small part of it has been discovered and excavated.

Panama canal (66, 8 km) Suez canal (Egypt) (150 km) Avrasya canal, Istambul (34, 4 km) ??? Does anyone else knows any other canal across the globe (with wide 30m top and altitude near 90m). However, I am not quite sure, which the policy of each shipping company (when the deal with local laws in countries where there is such small canals to cross!) I don't wish for my self, to be in captain position when needs to cross some canal 30 meters wide (150 metre/length & 80 altitude cruise ship). Worry about his credit card or dept card!
