You're right. We cant fully rely on government. Fortunately, many people including students from my university decide to take part to clean the river. We all realize that we have to take action. Now the condition of Citarum is better but still need so much more treatments to be a real clean river. Sad to know the fact that this kind of pollution is exist in my country and endangers the health of people who live near the river. Hopefully it will be clean and beautiful river soon.

In the Philippines, when the government started to clean the Bay, River, and sea shore then all the people follows and have the guts to fight those factories and people who's polluting the water. Now, those factories had their own waste treatment because if not, they'll be closed. It's more about enforcing the law whoever the big boss is. I spent 3 months in Indonesia, small towns/villages. The destruction of this country is massive. Deforestation, pollution. People burning garbage everywhere, throwing garbage in the rivers and the ocean. Entire beaches loaded with garbage. It's very sad that this is happening to such a beautiful country. I found corruption to be rampant, if you have money you can get/have anything. I believe there are a few factors that have led to this self destruction, the people either don't care or they don't know any better. The government officials are all about personal monetary gain. Change can only come from within the country. I'm Canadian, after being in Indonesia I gained a greater appreciation for everything I hold dear. I saw a documentary on Canada spending millions to salvage a chemical tanker truck that fell off a barge into deep water. Reminded me yet again that only white countries care about their environments. Those and developed Asian countries like Japan and Korea. All other countries have a SERIOUS problem with people dumping their trash where they stand. Indonesia and all African countries are the worst. Simply no care for their environments at all. The problem is their plastic trash washes into their rivers and into the world's oceans, so these idiots pollute everyone's environment, not just their own. It is true that rich countries sometimes dump their trash in poor countries, but the trash-throwing mentality of African and Indonesian people is a much bigger problem.

@@melxo19 I currently live in the UK and the water in my particular area is also relatively clean. I drink tap water and use a filter. However I'm well aware that the filtration process will not remove all of the microplastics before they reach my tap. Even the water filters that I use won't remove all of them. Microplastics can be found in a lot of bottled beverages too, including bottled water. Fortunately the amounts of microplastics are relatively low at the moment, but I'm worried because of the increase of plastic use. It is said that by 2050 that the total weight of plastic in the world's ocean will weight more than total weight of fish. Plastic is a major environmental concern which may also become a health risk at some point. It's in our air, in our land and in our water. It's terrible!

Even foreigners are concerned but the Indonesia's government don't. Even the shame they get barely moved them. It's hard to change things like this, especially like this case. This is also the reason why many Indonesian who has a better rationality move to other country. We are losing smart people lol but not all of them. Some are still coming back because they love Indonesia. And hopefully for those who comes back and for those who cares can change the condition of Indonesia in the future (from Indonesia's citizen with love)

By foreigners I mean the reporter/journalist in this video. He tried to convinced the minister of environment and also concerned with the toddler. But the government here? Nope. We have just elected new governor. I hope things will get better and the rise of welfare state spread evenly in every region. So for those who lives in slums near that river can get a better life..

@putrip.76096 жыл бұрын
bishplis hmm actually I think in Indonesia the main problem is not about taxes. But the corruption. And the worst region, the most corrupted is West Java. Which is where this river is located. So yeah, not all taxes money goes to public goods. Plus company such as textile factory like in this video could bribe the ministry of environment. The problem is more than not paying that much taxes.. but the moral damage..

I just can't understand why people live this way. I'm not talking about poverty. Living in filth has nothing to do with poverty. They say the government is corrupt and probably is I don't know but all the river problems are not all factory waste. People needs to be responsible and start picking up the filth they are throwing in the river. The kids see their parents doing this so it must be ok. And around it goes. No one wants to take responsibility. Lets Blame it on any one but me is the mentality. Don't wait for someone else, start by doing some yourself. then maybe just maybe the government will start helping. It doesn't do any good for them to help if the people doesn't change too.
@ashleypowers41776 жыл бұрын
I wondered about rainwater catchment system. A basic one isn't hard to make. I also wonder about just letting themselves live in trash. The problem of people who live in third world countries is that they don't have the imagination that people in first world have to make them the first world. All that trash, make into a resource. I see these pictures and I see so many things to use. It's imagination. A lot of these shows about poverty are a result of a people who still THINK like our ancestors a 100,000 years age. I don't blame them, but I wish people from the west would stop ACTING like their culture thinking is in anyway useful.

Watch it again and tell me they are not fighting. There are people, knowing they will lose their jobs or put to prison stand up and fight. And still you sit and accuse them for not acting. Stop doing this as a mentality thing. Factories polluting the river and a government neglecting their own bills - this is the real problem and a great cause for concern. So get of your high horse and stop facing the truth. We are talking heavy metals in the water - you cannot boil it away. It's stemming from the factories and monitoring is done.

UW, Thank you for making this documentary and releasing this to the world. In 2018 Indonesian government has finally taken steps towards the river cleansing. It is still too early to say that the river is clean, or whether the steps would be implemented consistently. Nevertheless, without this kind of journalism I don’t think the necessary change would even be considered. Plus the fact that the government in 2018 wouldn’t be the same government during the documentary was being recorded/made. Sorry for any grammatical error and typos, Indonesian here. 😊 Just wanna say that there are problems here, as much as (or potentially more than) other parts of he world. Yet, the only way to solve them is by having hope and making small changes towards the better whenever you can. Hate speech, calling names, or cyber bullying a country or its system or even its people may make one feel better, but does nothing towards the problems. Be brave, be kind. Keep up the good work of journalism!! 😊

I just feel so bad for them. I would bottle up some water containers and offer the people who are doing nothing to drink what they drink. If the government is getting money or some kind of payments vote him out until you get someone who WILL help out all the community’s. Find out the brand name of these greedy absurd people who would rather throw money to the government to keep them from doing anything to save their own children of there dirty community’s Name and shame them. This is where we can help you buy not buying their products They don’t care about young kids, babies and the mothers who need to feed their babies. I wish I had the money to lead the way.
