@Christopher McMillan The movie didn't do well because people were still so hung up on the feel and experience of Dawn of the Dead and its massive success - they wanted more of the same from Day of the Dead, but it's a different movie entirely, and far more oppressive in tone. The movie makes you think and audiences weren't expecting such a cerebral zombie after Dawn of the Dead. Add on top of that the fact that the marketing for the film was just awful... the people running promotion didn't know how to sell this movie to audiences or critics. They also had their budget cut to a third of what they requested for the film, and the movie was a limited release, as well as having a mature rating. It was a total mess. Thankfully they recovered their losses when the movie came to VHS and the movie found a much larger audience there.

@@unknowntm3856 I think you’re right there mate. George treated the actors like people rather than horses. He gave them quite a bit of freedom in their acting which allowed those scenes to be a lot better. Some of this they talk themselves down, I consider Day to be the second best film after Dawn. There is no way it is not a masterpiece, and also Joe Pilato plays Rhodes so well, I never once thought it was unrealistic. Also the score is a work of art. I hate to think these people don't really think that there's people out there who consider it the highest form of art. I had no idea some Romero fans of the day werent impressed, I saw this in the 90s, 2 days after Dawn, and was absolutely blown away. Also I think Savini would make a great Rhodes, and also that the film it is is probably better than the film that was planned, as Romero even said. The end confused me but I would never boo :-) Great docu thanks very much. Amazing!

Because up until then one of the stories my mom would always tell me, was the original Night of the Living Dead! So i was ecstatic to find out that there were sequels! And Day has been my favorite ever since. And i always took the ending to mean that most of the movie was her reliving things that actually happened in her dreams, with more than a bit of nightmare logic thrown in.

Day was my introduction to the Living Dead Trilogy. I never bothered to watch Romero's films growing up because I had some sort of preconceived notion about them. Just watched Day and the rest a month ago. It does everything I love with horror. Small cast, small set, unbeatable odds, and the creature serves as a piece to really highlight the drama between the humans. Takes me back to Alien and The Thing. This is without a doubt the best of the Living Dead Trilogy.

It's been awhile since I read that 'Dead Reckoning' script (this was before 'Land Of The Dead' was even in production, maybe during?) and I seem to remember one of the story's biggest flaws was having way too many characters. I also wasn't crazy about the "remote-controlled undead special forces" bit either, but that's just me. I dug the "class war" aspect--which they ended up exploring in 'Land'--but I preferred the way the Kaufman character (or whatever his name was in the script) went out in the script (devoured alive after attempting to seek refuge inside a tanning bed) rather than his demise in the film (an explosion).

Was the "vocal chord stretch" really not intentional from the FX dept? Holy shit. That was like the most profoundly disturbing part about that entire sequence. It has stuck with me forever. On a related note: it's funny how the head removal is so much so the entire focal point of that scene that you almost don't even notice that the rest of the zombies are just essentially giving him a light body massage elsewhere.

I hope to one day get the opportunity to helm a DAY OF THE DEAD remake, once all the smoke dies down from the over saturation of zombie like films comes and goes. It would be amazing to take the original script and play with everything. I can't help imagine what this film would have been, and I can only imagine it would have been amazing.

by far my favorite undead movie. have dr tongue tattooed on my thigh. it had a much darker tone then dawn, which is what i feel makes this movie better. if the undead roamed the earth, its gonna be dark and feeling hopelessness. if i could meet all the actors, id shake their hands and tell them they were part of a true masterpiece

After watching most of George A. Romero's works, and reading the initial prototype film script for his interpretation of the first Resident Evil, I wish he got to direct the Resident Evil film series. It would have been both truer to the video game source material and added to the worldbuilding of the series. It would have allowed him to expand further upon the ideas unique to the Resident Evil franchise as well allow him to continue expanding on the philosophy and ideas that his Living Dead trilogy began and which Resident Evil picked up, as the creators of Resident Evil admit that they were strongly inspired by George A. Romero's works. Wes Anderson's RE films are a mess in terms of vision. They lack a cohesive message and direction, and feel extremely derivative, more like a series of action vignettes inspired by so many other different films than one whole and continuous progression, like Romero's works.

Holy fuckin shit! What did I just see?! Seven years ago I wrote my bachelor's Film Studies thesis on this masterpiece and there was so little to find on this film anywhere... and a documentary of this sort... I honestly didn't even dare to dream of! This was absolutely fantastic! I first saw Day of the Dead when I was 14, it was my Dad's favorite zombie film, hell, maybe even horror film alltogether, a buddy of mine and I got to meet Joe Pilato at a horror convention in our early 20s, this film means the world to me! Take it from a hardcore Romero fan and fan of the series, it is the best! Perfect from beginning to end! God bless Romero, God bless Pilato, R.I.P., brothers, you are dearly missed.

Honestly I've read the Day of the Dead script, the unfilmed version. I don't much care for it. I much prefer the film we got. It's fantastic. I'm not always on the same page as Romero politically, but I think Day of the Dead is probably the best of the zombie movies. At least, to me. It's the one I love the most. It's from my favorite decade, it's got a great soundtrack, it's got great zombies by Tom Savini, a great performance by Joe Pilato... and how can you not love BUB?

This movie has aged so well and John Harrison's score is brilliant. It really takes me back to my late adolescence I'm the late 1980s and early 1990s. I saw a clip of this on some news presentation about gore in movies and it scared the hell out of me. Zombies always bugged me in a way nothing else in horror could. I couldn't even look at the box when I went to the video store, but eventually I worked up the courage (with some help from my friends) to rent it. I still own a VHS copy.

As a kid this was my first movie zombie experience after seeing Thriller maybe a year or two before. Freaked and shocked me at the time. When 28 Days Later and Resident Evil came out it didn't have the same impact.

An absolute masterpiece on every level and one of THE most underrated movies ever made. A tour de force in make up and practical effects on par with 'The Thing'. My favorite will always be 'Dawn of..' for sentimental reasons and how much that movie impacted me when i first saw it aged 14 years old. It remains my favorite movie. But HANDS DOWN 'Day of..' is the better crafted movie on every level. The first three movies in Romero's zombie trilogy and untouchable in my opinion. Romero is a master visionary and director. Always makes me laugh that all of his contemporaries like Scorcese, Spielberg, Friedkin etc all loved and respected him so much but the scumbag suits in Hollywood always saw him as a pariah. Goes to show that no amount of money can ever kill true creativity, and George kept his integrity by refusing to play the Hollywood game. RIP GEORGE A. ROMERO and thank you for bringing the dead to life.

Ya know, as far as the acting in Return goes, I felt it was top-notch. Especially the attic scene, where the old dude is contemplating shooting the girl in the head as her boyfriend tries to bust through the attic door. I realize the movie was kinda campy, but still a great performance.

Critics don't know shit. They only know how to praise what is the popular flavour of the week, or the studios that pay them. How can art be "judged" by one time watching or by comparing to what you wanted it to be? Film critics are bullshit and Day of the Dead is maybe the greatest Romero's film.
