We spent the day with Tom Savini, the legendary horror special effects master and makeup artist. He gives us a personal behind-the-scenes tour of his school the TOM SAVINI’S SPECIAL MAKEUP EFFECTS PROGRAM, and then takes us deep into his home to see his personal collection of HORROR MOVIE memorabilia and to share stories.
Tom Savini is an American actor, stunt performer, film director, and prosthetic makeup artist. He is known for his makeup and special effects work on many films directed by George A. Romero, including Martin, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Creepshow and Monkey Shines; he also created the special effects and makeup for many cult classics like Friday the 13th (parts I and IV), Maniac, The Burning, The Prowler and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2.
www.savini.com
Tom Savini's Special Make-Up Effects Program is a 16-month academic program at the Douglas Education Center in Monessen, Pennsylvania, outside of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The program awards an associate degree in Specialized Business. The program began in 2000.

He does look great for 72...BTW one of the many proven secrets to slowing down aging is to always be a kid at heart and have a passion for what you do, because most (not all) people hate their jobs and at 52 they look 72.

@@hunterbrigham2900 Probably different environments. In this video he's at his school and then his home. Places he visits often/lives are bound to make him more relaxed. A place like comicon can be stressful. Not every fan is gonna be respectful and calm. Some will be erratic, embarrassing, or downright rude. On top of it just being an exhausting event, I can understand someone getting a bit nasty. Not saying he was in the right but it's understandable and could be an outlier and not his actual personality.

Gotta say, I was blown away by this episode with the Great Savini! I've been a fan of his since i was 12 years old. He frightened the hell out of me with Dawn of the Dead and continues to do so now. I'm 52 btw. Thanks so much for putting this special episode together Grimm. Keep up the stellar work!

As a minimalist, I just want to run from all the "stuff" in Tom Savini's house. I appreciate the love for their craft and profession and the need to save all the props but, you need a fair amount of real estate to store everything.

It's so sad Hollywood going so hard on CGI instead of Prosthetics and latex. It just seems more realistic and looks better.
@Syklonus
@Syklonus 5 жыл бұрын
You only see the bad CGI and assume it's all like that. There is so much CGI in the industry that goes completely unnoticed, and it's an invaluable asset to directors, so it's foolish to make sweeping generalisations like that. It's a tool like anything else, and a tool in the wrong hands will make terrible results, just as a tool in the right hands will make wonderful results. There's been plenty of awful practical FX and makeup over the years, so don't make out that it's some sort of infallible medium that never goes wrong or is always superior to CGI.
@MrUseless247
@MrUseless247 5 жыл бұрын
@@Syklonus I kinda agree with you, but in Today's Hollywood CGI seems to be the go to "tool" studios prefer using even if they can't afford it. So we end up with cartoon-ish effects in a movie or show that doesn't require it. I'd rather see bad practical effects than bad CGI. Even when a studio has the budget for decent effects (practical or CGI) it seems they lean more on bad CGI. For example: The Thing 2011.

About twenty five years ago, I was so interested in FX makeup I tracked down Tom Savini's phone number and called his studio to inquire about how to get into it. I don't think he had a school back then and he was so kind to take time out of his busy schedule to speak to some dumb confused twenty something about possibly completely changing his life. He spoke to me for at least half an hour and helped me realize that as much as I loved FX makeup, I probably didn't love it enough to make a life out of it. I will always appreciate the man's kindness and patience for a fan.

Sadly, he is known for doing a lot of gory horror stuff which certainly isn't for everyones taste. Take Day of the Dead for instance, its a very good film (I've had to watch it more than once to appreciate), & the special effects are simply incredible, but the amount of gore in it is really difficult to watch, which turned off a lot of people at the time. He should at least get a lifetime achievement award though.

This is amazing. My dad introduced me to horror through the movie The Man of a 1000 Faces when I was very young. It has been my obsession ever since. I have become a reclusive person in my adult life. Thank you so much Michael and Jessica for taking me on your adventures through this channel. It has brought me more joy than I thought possible.

Back in 2008 I was one of the first students in Tom's film program. Back then it was called "The Tom Savini's Digital Film Program." I lived in the Dust Till Dawn dorm. It was an experience I will never forget. I remember we were allowed to shoot our short films around the town without getting any hassle from the locals. At night where the school was located (Monessen) it felt like being in the movie Silent Hill because it was a bit scary to venture out, but it was still great to be around some very talented people at the school. I really do miss that place. Thanks for sharing and bringing back some good memories. :)

The webbed face hugger in Tom's movie room is the "Queen Facehugger" used in Alien 3. Unfortunately the scene never made it into the movie but you can see it in the deleted scenes in the Alien Quadrilogy dvd special features release. The idea was to have Ripley impregnated with a queen it would need an Queen Facehugger. But there couldn't have been many of those made so I wonder if Tom's prop was screen used?! Great video and thanks for posting. What a lovely guy.
