The most important thing about high-speed rail is the efficiency of short-distance travel. I can visit a city 200 kilometers away in just one hour. This distance is not suitable for flying. It is as ambitious as the US Interstate System, and fits the Chinese national character of national infrastructure for national benefit. Significantly, it is all electric, so China's massive renewables push makes the long term operation a little cheaper and greener every year. By 2030, almost ALL Chinese transportation will be electric, powered by renewables. Aside, it is a little surprising that Australia doesn't run a HSR line down the western coast, powered by solar and wind, as the national benefit would be enormous.

450 kmh is a key benchmark for rail. Half the speed of intercontinental airliners, and also the max service speed of the German Transrapid EMS Maglev built in China more than 2O years ago. Due to the short route (31 km), it is restricted to 431kmh). In Australia we should build EMS Maglev with 450 kmh top service speed. The system is far cheaper than the Japanese EDS Maglev. Many reasons to limit ground travel speed to 450 kmh which I won't go into here. Maglev needs less maintenance, costs less than conventional HS trains - in part because it rides on a continuous viaduct which means it can be in the air clear of the ground level disruptions which make HS conventional train systems very expensive.

Conventional HS trains are much more expensive than maglev because of the many moving/rotating/frictional and wearing components that require regular maintenance and replacement.

The Oz govt decided not to build it stating that it could afford to build it but taxpayers will hv to support it for the next 30 years. Probably not enough passenger traffic to pay for the operational expenses (OPEX).

Shanghai Maglev Train (also called Shanghai Transrapid) is the first Maglev line in China and the first and the fastest operational commercial Maglev Train in the world, which represents the high technology, wisdom, creativity of human being. Started from 2006, Shanghai Maglev Train runs between Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) and Longyang Road in downtown Shanghai. With a top speed of 431 km/h, it shortens the 30 km (18.6 mi) journey to only 8 minutes, offering great convenience and special Maglev Train experience for transferring between downtown Shanghai and Pudong International Airport.

Furthermore, as science can make it speedier with time, making it affordable to travel greater distances in the same amount of time, travel by plane for the Chinese will be left only for intercontinental trip. Worth to mention that China seeks integration with neighboring countries via high speed trains.

I took an hour bus in China cost $5USD for 35 miles. For a hundred mile, first class high speed train is $4.25 USD. For second class is half of the price. I don’t know why China uses the term first class, second class. It is kind of discrimination. It can use color code like red, blue, yellow instead 😂😫

I drive a tiny, reliable ICE car (Holden Spark) and will replace it with a small electric car with some ground clearance for forest roads. Only need about 300km range but 400 would be better and it needs the reverse flow capability to power my tiny house in emergencies and when going camping. Have 6.6kWh solar panels but no home battery yet. For me a car needs to be basic, getting me from A to B, with some carry space with backseats folded or removed, not to show off power or speed or luxury and complicated tech. I love China, such progress. Amazing what can be done with a government that cares for its people.

China apparently has now leap frogged Japan and Europe in developing and adopting indigenous Maglev trains, beating all previous records of speed (talking 650km/hr ?). Interestingly, China has built a high speed line in Indonesia too, a populous country with a high demand and growing middle class. High Speed network is capital intensive and the financial model must be worked out extremely carefully considering both tangible/direct and intangible/indirect benefits. Running costs could also be quite high since ensuring high safety standards in both maintenance and operation is critical. IMHO these high speed trains are economically viable if it is driven by green energy. Perhaps demands at least 80-90% patronage. Further, the fares could be just as high as airfares just to break even. Unless the travel is subsidised by the Government, it could be out of reach of many.
@SteveIceT0118 күн бұрын
And the goverment should not treat it to have a breakeven at shortterm. This is a longterm project. This is build for the people not for profit. Profit will come later when this is fully adopted. The plan is also to have a buzzing small and medium size businesses at and around the (train) stations. That's why you will see in Asia that there is/are malls at or near the bigger stations. This concept is now also in Indonesia with their high speed rail.

To achieve that high speed they had to reduce the train weight significantly: instead of the 8 articulated carriages in the middle (push pulled by 2 power cars) they reduce it to only 3. They substituted the powered wheels with larger ones so with the same rotation speed the distance per rotation is increased and finally the drastically increased the voltage on the catenary to give extra powers to the train motors. And at last: the train did not have a lot of pessengers: only a dozen of so engineers and press people. Now I want to see the same speed with a full train with 8 articulated carriages carrying 500 passengers inside the train....I am sure the speed will be drastically reduced.

Not yet built, expected completion 2027. China has the first commercial meglev in Shanghai operating in 2021, at 268 mph. "China is developing magnetic levitation (maglev) trains that could revolutionize transportation by connecting cities and villages with speeds of up to 4,000 kilometers per hour (kph). The trains would fly through tubes instead of rolling on railways, and could reduce travel time and improve environmental safety. In February 2024, China's maglev train traveled stably through a 2-kilometer low-vacuum tube at a speed faster than its previous record of 623 kph. T-Flight The T-Flight maglev train was built by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Corporation (CASIC). CASIC built a 1.2-mile track in a low-pressure vacuum tube to test the train. Track In the second phase of testing, CASIC plans to extend the track to 37 miles and allow the train to reach 621 mph." (Google AI)

@@KimLee-n4c Sure but will cost a lot more and takes much longer. The Japanese are having problems with their hsr project in India. Way behind schedule. The French will be expensive and it's no guarantee they can complete it within budget and time agreed. Just check up their on going Hinkley nuclear power plant project in the UK. They are looking at a 14 year delay in completion and will ultimately cost twice the original contract of £18 billion. Much wiser and safer bet to hire the Chinese instead. Even if it's an unappealing proposition to many. But it is what it is. They are the best hsr builders, value for money can buy. They have already completed both the Laos and Indonesian hsr projects recently . Now they are collaborating with Thailand and in talks with Vietnam to connect their rail network in the north to China. You may have also read recently about the signing ceremony in Kyrgyzstan where China will undertake to build a railway line connecting their north western city of Kashgar to neighbor Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan. Project to start next year. There's is an old Chinese saying : If you want to be rich, first build roads. Tell your politicians to forget about that mega expensive Ankus nuclear subs and invest your money instead on upgrading your rail network. At least along your east coast region. Its utterly nonsensical to think China will come down under to invade and take over the country. Just stay in your corner and not venture far from your backyard. They are your largest trading partner which you are very dependent on. They need your natural resources and they are good paymasters. The biggest threat to your national security comes from within and from illegal migrant boats coming in from Indonesia. Nuclear subs won't be useful or help to deal with these threats.
