I've been using Opera for years (since the high 3.9x version at least), but I can't use it as my everything browser, since there are some videos that are not able to be viewed using it. I end up using four browsers for different things, but I still use Opera for most of my research and saved links. I use Chrome for KZbin, Firefox for Social Media and Brave for a few other utilities and downloading some stuff.

Ancient weights would be very interesting. There are examples of stones, with the handle held by the "Bird Headed" figures on Mesopotamia carving. Often referred to as a "Purse". There is a lady on KZbin who has a video yet I believe there might be more widespread reference to these measures.

I love learning about those, but it's also great to hear about the ancient late Neolithic and Bronze Age cultures that came before these and gave birth to them. Things like videos on currency, weights and measures, and other mundane things that were a part of their lives help paint a picture of the entire culture and the people that make it up, not just their most famous members. So yes please, do the weights and measures.

well, until he started trying to make connections between bronze age commodities and the metric system, that was plain silly. also, the leaping to the assumption that groups of 5's and 10's being common suggesting a decimal system is technically even more suggestive of a 5 based system but is not really definitive of any system at all. the rest is pretty good.

Bronze Age weights? Yes please! Surely, those 'ribs' are just un-formed versions of the circlets? And therefore, if they weigh the same as a circlet, they were just the same value (???) I also know that 'manillas' definitely WERE used as currency in west Africa until fairly recently (websearch "manillas as currency"). These manillas (from the Portugese word for 'bangle') were essentially identical in form to the circlets in the video. So yes, I would definitely support the idea that these bronze age objects were used as currency, due to the fact that similar forms were in use as exactly that for centuries, until fairly recently.

To my knowledge, early money and ingots are somewhat interchangeable. Early money systems were tied to the value of the metal they were made out of, English pennies for instance were made of pure silver and a pound (lb) of silver was a pound (£) of pennies. The minoans, Sumerians and Egyptians all traded in copper ingots, so my guess is that these items served a similar function of being a useful tradable commodity, but much more transportable than a bar or sheet of metal.

Mark 1.15 15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel. 2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. Hebrews 11:6 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Jesus

I actually thought about this not too long ago; what was the very first day ever of money? I imagined a few thousand years ago someone in Europe saying 'I'll trade you your chicken for this nice flat piece of copper that I just hammered out. Maybe I'll make more and make them nice and round...', something like that, lol.

A lot of my knowledge has come from your excellent videos, always well researched and gripping to watch. I cannot imagine how much time and effort go into these beautiful and informative productions. Good video. I've studied the history of money for about 15 years. As you mention, the ingots and rings DO fit the characteristics of money. But they would typically fall under the category of an exchangeable commodity or proto-money. The first form of proto-money likely predates written history. But items like Cowrie Shells have been found in archaeological sites in Africa and Asia dating back as far as 120,000 years ago. The key difference between money and proto-money is (generally) the presence of standardized systems and centralized institutions, particularly a government or similar authority.
@DanDavisHistory
@DanDavisHistory 10 күн бұрын
Yeah Unetice researchers like Harald Meller believe these were state level or proto state level societies with central control over people and the copper supply - the forms and the special metal content (giving an obvious silvery colour) - being their version of a stamp of issuing central authority. Everyone would have understood where they came from.

@@DanDavisHistory Hmm, very interesting. Yeah, maybe. Money as a concept is fascinating; I mean I obviously think so. Money is something everyone wants. But few are able to define why money is valuable beyond the circular logic: "money is valuable because you can buy things with it...and you can buy things with money because it's valuable."

What a great video. Specially the end, where you comment how this system was stopped being used simultaneously in various locations and its connection with old weight systems. Also, how the weight systems could be linked to the current universal system.

The Hoops are clasps for closing a sleeve or cuff. The Rib Ingots are bits for a herd animal: like deer or goats, as to be harnessed. The Small spirals were the currency: and you would cut a spiral. Grains were also common, and as you know larger ingots were available in the south. Beads obviously held a value: and thus the spirals would be included in such arrangements. Yet the barter system was still in greater formulation, and currency was more of a ledger of stuff owed by or to a house of trade.

@@DanDavisHistory The bits for a horse are still brass today. A deer pulling a pulka would require a metal bit to prevent them biting through. Oxen, Deer, or even goats would use the Rib ingots, and allow for the pulling of the head in a direction with reigns. The Rings have Eyelets to allow them to be cinched closed, and secured. As teams of deer would be used at times: they would be traded with or without the animals. Some of the Ribs still have teeth marks in them. A common practice was to remove two of the animals teeth to place the bit through. Check for animal skulls with missing teeth, or the common wear pattern of such a bit and tack.

@williamcourtland5945
@williamcourtland5945 10 күн бұрын
@@johnhunt2390 Bits were often secured with hoops or rings used to hold the straps of the bridle. The reigns attach to the head and the rings, providing a direct control of the animal. The Bent heads of the rods are rational to fit through these rings and provide a stable connection which was then locked with another thong of leather and the reign head. The rings of a reign would be heavier than the closing hoops for the cuffs of a sleeve.
