The world's largest indoor waterpark

tomscott.com - / tomscott - The biggest uninterrupted indoor space on the planet, Tropical Islands Resort ( www.tropical-i... ), sits on an old airfield in Germany. How on earth could anyone afford to build something that big... and then use it as a waterpark? Well, the story's a bit more complicated than that.
(And full disclosure: this isn't a sponsored video, no money's changed hands, but Tropical Islands were happy to let me in free and give me a ride up on their balloon. I'm grateful to all the team there for a fantastic day!)

A few years ago a German horror-movie shot some scenes there. They used (too much) movie-blood without permission, and dyed part of the sand red. They had to bring in several dump-trucks full of special sand to replace it, which is one of the most expensive production-mishaps in German movie history.

***** I have been there too, but it's not really that great of an amusement park... sure there are some slides, but you have to pay extra for them, they are not part of the entry ticket price. (5€ extra for the 4 slides). If you're planning on just chilling by the 'ocean' like you would on a real tropical island, then this is the right choice for you. I went with a couple of friends looking for great fun, but we were severely disappointed by the boring atmosphere in there...

When you're standing on the ground the roof is actually so far away that you get aerial perspective effects when looking at it, meaning that it appears more desaturated and blue than it actually is due to the amount of air you're looking through. It's the same effect with mountains in the distance.

Gabby Avery you'd have to remove all the plants, alto they get uv light, watering them would be a challenge, if not a downright waste given the circumstances, you'd also have to empty all the pools because standing water and all that nonsense, i agree that as a giant fairly enclosed space it would have uses in that scenario, but your little paradise at worlds end it would be not. I saw a documentary about it. Alone the amount of effort they put into the gardening is already insane as these are true tropical plants that require a true tropical environment to grow (temperature, air humanity, amount of sun every day), that's why they try to simulate such an environment as closely as possible. They even simulate true rain as it's not enough to just water them from below.

If you want to go there, here are a few things to acknowledge: - There are constantly 26°C+ and the air is very wet so (for me) its hard to sleep in there and if you manage to fall asleep be aware of the flamingos screaming at 4am... - There are GIANT bugs... EVERYWHERE besides in the water - The fastest water slide actually hurts to use cause it speeds you up to about 70 km/h (don't quote me on that number but you get very fast) - You lose track of how much money you spent very easily because you get a bracelet with an id chip for scanning that you did something you have to pay for and you pay at the end... - I didn't understand how breakfast worked i think you have to pay and then you get knife and fork etc but i didn't actually do it that way I just ate without a knife :)

German guy here. I've been in this waterpark a few years back. Back then, the waterpark itself was already finshed, but the "green area" (in one corner there's pretty much only few animals + trees and other plants as you could see) only was a small path back then with few trees and palms left and right. The biggest problem with this water park is that it's pretty expensive. I went there with my class in our "last" year (10th grade secondary school), so my parents had to make up for it, but it's really not recommandable if you're not a) pretty wealthy or b) in desparation for some "tropical" (= warm humid air) feeling. So it's never worth going there in summer, only in winter if you really need to but even then normal indoor water parks (there are plenty of them in Germany) are a much better choice, because they are quite a lot bigger (in terms of attractions, pools and their variety), cheaper. But being inside there is pretty impressive. And the sight when you're on top of the biggest water slide gives a nice overview. :)

The German government should have saved the Cargolifter airship project. The idea was fantastic. FoodOnCrack Airships are very comfortable to travel on, therefore the purpose of airships wouldn't be transport mostly, but aerial tourism: having the luxury to look down x) An airship could be filled with loads of interesting features. I was there as a physics student when the company still wanted to build their zeppelin. Looking from the top down to ground the people seemed to be as small as ants. Ant they had weather there and fog and rain. A shame I did not visit it again since it is the tropical islands. Especially because I only live about 200km away from it.

If you want to visit an airship hangar currently in use, you should contact the company 'Hybrid Air Vehicles', based in the Cardington Hangars in Bedford. The Hangar is not quite as huge as this one, but seeing an airship is quite amazing.

a friend of mine whose dad was a lawyer celebrated her birthday there every year. which wasn't a stupid idea as us kids (we were like kindergarden to primary school age) would be taken care of by staff and her dad had an afternoon off. this is one of those places that if you live nearby, which i used to when i was younger, you don't go there because of all the tourists flocking in from mostly other parts of germany and poland, yet it's probably one of the main providers of work in the area. i don't know how it looks nowadays but within the last few years they added a whole outdoor camping area as well as other stuff.

They should genetically engineer trees that can get all the energy they need from wavelengths outside of UV, and then replace the windows with UV opaque glass (which already exists). It would be the only place in the world where you can spend a full sunny day at the beach, and not have to put on sunscreen.

danielcw Yeah, I'm actually old enough to remember all the hoo-hah around the Cargolifter project back in the late 90s. At the time, it was all glossy brochures and expensive computer animation and lots of hype-y press releases and had the distinct odour of a scam. I don't think that a cargo-carrying airship would be a viable business model. Freight don't care how it gets there. On the other hand, passengers would be prepared to pay a premium for travelling in style.
