Today we revisit a brand that has achieved an impressive amount of horological marvels in a short period of time. Hailing from the heartland of Swiss watchmakers, Frederique Constant has managed to offer some of the most compelling, classy, tastefully designed, and affordable luxury timepieces, compared to their contemporaries. How have they done this? And what is the secret to their success? Today we answer these questions with a look at a new version for 2022 of their Highlife Perpetual Calendar watch (ref. FC-775BL4NH6B). In this review, I analyze this watch's design, influences, positives and negatives, and how it typifies everything this brand is capable of. I also explore Frederique Constant's short but fascinating history of innovation, and the price point of its Highlife Perpetual Calendar, as it's currently the most affordable Swiss automatic perpetual calendar you can buy new on the market today.

I love the idea of perpetual calendar watches and I want one. However, the realization that the watch will keep track of my remaining days on earth and remind me of that every time I glance at it kind of freaks me out. At 56 years old, this would start to become an issue. Or perhaps I should get one and truly embrace the Momento Mori ethos. I am torn. Thanks for the review. --Michael

I agree, I have been obsessed with this recently. I love the idea of foresight a analogue clock gives and with having the month and date is even better. Forward thinking. As most of these watches are way out of my budget. I was thinking of either getting a digital watch and getting a calendar face and also maybe building some sort off app to express the idea for my phone desktop

perhaps look at the watch think about how another person created this amazing timepiece that can transcend a normal persons life and know that while you will eventually pass on and no longer need it, the watch can keep on ticking so long as somebody else takes it up and wears it as well. perhaps your son, or a nephew or anybody you find fitting to carry on such a beautifully built piece of machinery that can carry on long past most of us will. remembering we will all die shouldnt cause us to forget that many will outlive us and carry on as if we were never even here. passing on a nice timepiece like this can let somebody remember us a little better for a while though, and i dont find that sad or gloom at all. quite the opposite. part of why i think spending so much on a watch is worth it. the opportunity to pass it on to a loved one who can then remember you every day or for special occasions or whatever the case may be.

I feel like "younger" brands like this are instrumental for the future of our hobby. They are 100% traditional watchmakers, however they tend to be much more daring, whilst keeping the traditional designs and characteristics we love. And Frederique Constat are definitely no exception. Great video as always.

I must say: FC was almost *entirely* off my radar until watching this. Quite well-done all around, and the way it hugs the wrist…can't say I'm that big on perp-cals (other than my Casio Edifice, but that's a whole 'nother ball of wax), but this is solidly good, especially at the asking price, which those who don't "get" mech perpetuals won't fully understand. Thanks again for spotlighting this, and hats off to FC for recognizing your astute take on horological matters.

I've kept an eye on FC for a while now, and despite they are rarely mentioned, I do find it odd because they really have a lot of proper qualities you won't find by many others in the same price range. And ever since I discovered them, I kinda looked at them as the Patek alternative for us mortals. And on paper you get pretty much the same, with a long, respective history as well. Worst thing is, I've heard people calling the Highlife series an overpriced Nautilus homage, and frankly I find such statements as just pure snobbery, and to call this an homage there is a lot of other quality Swiss brands to throw under that same bus, none of which deserves it. FC is definitely on my list over watches I want to own, and the worldtimer is the one which had me drooling the most since it's release. The perpetual calendar is also nice, but I feel they need to just tweak and refine it just a tad before I would consider one. However, put next to a Royal Oak PC this is practically a steal, regardless of the superior refinement and artisan craftmanship that goes through and through on the Royal Oak. And the fact that FC seem to be very open to expose themselves among reviewers like yourself shows they got nothing to hide in regards to quality and finishing. Is it worth the bucks? In my opinion it absolutely is. Thanks for another good video, TGV! Good health to you and Hugo.

Nice-looking watch and a great review. Very fair and honest. Personally, I would not buy a perp calendar watch--because I have a sneaking suspicion that it would be in the "shop" getting serviced very frequently. Unfortunately, there's no J.D. Enjoyable! All these pieces in harmony. I looked Tissot and Certina moonphase until I stumbled upon another family member of the highlife series called Heart Beat (FC-310N4NH6B). + Looked other Frederique's and been looking before. There was a decent discount as well, but I didn't want to rush. It's great to see it in person before ordering online. But it looks stunning and elegant. The only downside with these Highlife watches is that they glow in the dark. I'm not a big fan of that, but I believe I can get used to it. The Highlife is youthful, but the FC-710MC4H4 seems like a timeless piece, love the Roman numerals.
@dnbrg74
@dnbrg74 2 жыл бұрын
Hi TGV. I get it now. I understand moon phase. You had me at the intro with the visual and the music. I looked up that part by Ian Post as well. I never really thought I wanted or needed moon phase, but I was being too practical, and also dismissive of it being merely a disc with stars and a moon printed on it. It has a usefulness, sure, but I think it is far overshadowed by the romanticism. That is what I get out of it. I’m keen to get one in my hands now and have an up close look and feel. And in terms of FC as a brand, I kind of dismissed it being part of Citizen group. Not being snobby, Seiko and Citizen are my jam, but I wrongfully assumed FC being relatively young, weren’t the real deal. I learned a lot about the brand in this video, and I humbly admit I may have been wrong - worthy of consideration. Gratefully more open minded on two fronts here. Thanks & kind regards, Dean.

Great timing as I'm really considering putting on my list the FC Worldtimer Highlife... me too ! I had some concerns about the 41 mm diameter for my small wrist but it seems to be OK. That blue colour might not be the perfect match for Marc 😅 but I like it: nice blue and under the radar. 👌 This case design with integrated bracelet is nice and clean and with the additional strap it's not a problem at all. Maybe with their more classic designs they should go smaller. I've also heard that there were some concerns about customer service. 😬 Bottom line this Highlife collection looks like a good value for money... and this Worldtimer is playing footsie with me. 😎

I've owned the 3 hand Highlife COSC for a couple of years now. At £1200-something I too was also disappointed with the bracelet pin/collar. The lack of half links is also a gripe, as I'm right between links at the moment. Consequently it is mostly on the rubber strap at the moment, which fortunately is really nice and suits the watch. On the rubber it can be worn with just about anything north of your jimmy-jams. Only other thing of note is the case and bracelet centres are real scratch magnets. It's a keeper, and has a permanent place in the watch box - right up until (if) they put the 40hz monolithic movement in a production Highlife, and then I'd trade up. They apparently did a one-off for a charity auction, so it can be done.

I bought one F.C. for my son, it looked nice for awhile, but the black finish started to wear off, and that was the beginning of the end. It started coming off at an alarming rate until it was unwearable. It now resides in his junk pile of watches. I also have a question, didn't they used to give these as prizes on game shows. Maybe I'm thinking of Lucian Piccard?

FC make good watches. It's a snobbery I don't fully understand that makes channels laud Baltic and denigrate FC. I'm hoping it's a brand lifecycle thing and that in a another 50 years they get a more lofty appreciation they deserve but for now it helps keep the prices and second hand prices definitely in check. The concept is ingenious & they are very brave to offer a perpetual calendar in this price range, my concern with so many offerings is mechanical accuracy limitations. Even a movement running close to flat (+\- 1sec) is still 5 or 6 minutes off by a years end. I’m not going to wear a watch that’s 6 minutes off, which means I have to re-set the time which means The perpetual calendar is unfortunately, kind of pointless-

Another great video. Appreciate everything you do for the hobby and the wide array of brands you cover. I have watched so many of your videos and just enjoy the honesty and professionalism. If you had to choose between this Perpetual and the MontBlanc what would you chose? Both “affordable” relatively speaking Perpetual Calendars.

Thank you for your great review and great production. I would have loved to hear about the watches power reserve (how long) and if it is actually a candidate for a watch winder or is it easy enough to set with all the pushers. Greetings to Hugo who I would have also sent away so he can not mess with this timepieces. This video also put FC on the map for me. I just didn't pay attention to them before.

Very nice watch TGV. You're right it doesn't look like a 40.8 mm diameter. The dial colour really pops out. Also love the calming background music. However, I need to digress for a minute of your time ( pun intended ). Have you reviewed the Vacheron 222 yet, and I'd love to hear your opinion of it. I personally love it, I just don't have the $62,500 to procure one. I do intend on getting the Tissot PRX in 36mm. As always kind regards from Australia, Rikki.

Wow it is a really cool watch! It seems like the shape of a milgaus ? But bigger and with a perpetual callendar! Love the history the way you tell us about FC!

Good review, but i didn't hear the most important of this watch: Accuracy! For i believe this is the first and most important on a time keeping machine.

Great video and content! Have been seriously considering an Oris Artelier Complication which is similar in appearance to this particular FC. Also, wanting a Mido GMT automatic in the same price range. Having trouble deciding on which one. At some point though I can certainly see owning a FC.

They have the same perpetual calendar watch in their Slimline collection for a third of the price of this Highlife version. It even has the exact same movement as this one. Get the Slimline version and spend the money you saved on their worldtimer watch.

Hi TGV A perceptual calendar must be the genuine nerdy watch enthusiast piece. And very expensive as they are so complicated to develop and manufacture. With that in mind this is almost a bargain. And pure class too😊 Keep up the good work👍
