The interesting thing about veteran automobiles is the designers/engineers were willing to try anything they thought would give them an edge in durability and power

Amazing cars. The general Public know very little about the dawn of the industry.

Another tire problem was horseshoe nails that were everywhere on the so-called roads. They even made devices to try to scrape the nails off before they fully punctured the tire. The early engine oils were not that great so running fresh oil all the time and letting the old oil relieve itself:-) probably kept a lot of those cars running to this day.

Good point. That's something we don't really think about.

We're 9 minutes in before we get to see one of the cars up close. I recommend having more of your dialog while we're looking at the cars.

Isn't the reason tires became black was the addition of carbon black to the rubber to increase durability/longevity of the rubber?

The way I heard it was that they added the lampblack to the white rubber tires because they quickly became unsightly, and that it was a happy accident that it made the last much longer. That could just be a story, but it’s the one I’ve heard.

perhaps, but major racing didn't really begin in earnest till about 1903 on the continuous use venues, like the milwalki mile and the hoosier mile in 1903 with the first 60 mph run and what inspired there the guys that eventually built the indy motor speedway, but yes its was the openwheel runn abouts and coups like these that were the first race cars running on horsetracks, though as you state they had been running races point to point in europe, however much of this in here is news to me from my internet searches tell me differant things, example the first production gas car in the usa I read was out of kokomo indiana from elwood hayes. and was told the first auto race in the usa was at knoxvill between two cars at the track there, where I read that I am not sure but read that somewhere last year.

If I don't go to your exhibition , I will miss seeing some of the most storied automobiles ever made. I live in northern New Mexico but I've got to see those pioneer racers.
