Two additions that I can suggest: 1. Voice controls, that would just be awesome and straight out of Harry Potter 2. What if they put a light on the board instead of a beep. @grammarnazi74286 жыл бұрын
- board knocks its own pieces over - pieces are small - pieces move too slow - no storage - beep noise - gee whiz, with all that technology and pricing, you might as well add a built in chess clock - could use some other additions, such as voice operated moves (ex: say PAWN TO E4) /or beeping ability in every piece (in case you drop a piece and need to find it) - not convenient for travel - and other issues that I'm sure you could think of
@spykidcgaming79485 жыл бұрын
After just looking at their site I thought of the idea of voice control, and so I emailed them about it and they said it was in the pipeline but wasn't likely to be out soon as they wanted to perfect the current features. Which is fair enough. After watching a few videos I instantly noticed the whizzing sound and the beeping which has obviously been previously mentioned, and then later there is the trouble of the knocking over of other pieces. The concept is amazing but they, of course, have flaws. It would be great to see those fixed, and maybe a bit of a price reduction, then I would be more than happy to purchase this incredible board.

If so, how many? 3) Is there a way to present the machine with a chess problem and have the machine decide what move to make? 4) Am I correct that the real chess playing is being done by the app in your smartphone? If you upgrade to a new smartphone (perhaps with more memory and/or better processing speeds), will there be any problem switching the chessboard to work with the new smartphone? 5) Is it likely that improvements will be made to the chess playing app in the future, so that people will be able to download the new app and use it with the SquareOff chessboard they already own?

Fidelity had a similar board(s) under the Phantom Chess or Chester with the model 6126 being the pinnacle as it would talk to you and even heckle you at times. One thing though they did better than what I see here is that when castling or moving backboard pieces the unit was smart enough to move pieces out of the way to allow the piece to move through, the board here relies on the gap between the pieces which cannot be trusted as shown.

It's interesting that the Excalibur Mirage had an LCD chess clock. It moved the pieces out of the way before moving a knight. I know that Square Off has a more expensive board where it moves the captured pieces, like the Mirage. The Square Off uses a rubber belt to move the magnet around under the board. The Mirage was all metal gears. The only thing that was bad about the Mirage way was that it used a rubber band for one of the parts and that's what failed in mine. Edit, update: I opened my Mirage open and found that it used rubber bands with gear teeth, like the Square Off, for the motors. But the part that moves the magnet are all metal.

Following research I was amazed to discover that in 1983 Milton Bradley made Grandmaster Chess which works in exactly the same way as this modern day Square Off! What I noticed with the vintage version from 1983 is that it moves the pieces much much quicker around the board... and has a clever system of moving to one side slightly a piece that's in the way of a move, then cleverly puts it back! I think Square Off could achieve both of these features through software updates. Search out Milton Bradley Grandmaster here on KZbin and see how similar these devices are. Also it's a shame Square Off don't keep a regular news update on their website about what they are doing regarding improvements and software/firmware updates! I will probably buy this chess set as it's the only one on the market that moves pieces!

Absolutely amazing! If the company ever wants to add some things... - Voice control! It'd not only be insanely cool to be able to call out your moves while lounging like a king, but also help those without hands/fine motor control to be able to play chess - Modifiable: if you could allow programmers to mess around with the code easily, I bet a small modding community could be formed around the base mechanism, such as interchangeable board tops, pieces, allowing different set-ups, etc. and could add things such as voice control or music (perhaps even interactive music that changes with the game), or a light system hanging above that displays possible moves on the board (and if a piece falls down displays where it's supposed to go, etc.) - Sell a bigger set, or bigger pieces, the nice thicc tournament bois; we're already spending hundreds, what's a couple hundred more for better pieces? - Connection with other devices (Alexa, Siri, etc.) - Allow us to spectate games - If possible, connect to the database of all major tournament games (or store in memory) such that we can ask it to set up "Kasparov vs. Deep Blue, Game 2"; additionally allow it to "spectate" a game, updating whenever you play a move so when you get back home it's set-up on where you left off - If not already implemented, chess clock needs to be integrated. Possibly even have a built-in clock that can pop out as well, or just play the clock . Additionally or in place of, allow two phones to connect such that each player can use their device as a clock. - If not already implemented, allow the player to setup any position to play from - If possible, a self-righting procedure (if it can recognize a piece falling over and "grab" it while it's down, it could perhaps drag it to a corner of the board that angles outwards with a magnet to "catch" the bottom then retracts to right the piece?) - Possibly, make pieces conductive such that it senses when touched, if you really want to enforce the touch-move rule (a bit much tho) - Allow pieces to retract into the board on the side or otherwise automatically store themselves - Sell an optional case-table: a protective carrying case that stores the board and pieces securely for travel, but can also lay down legs (and possibly even two optional simple seats that extend out) and uncover the top to serve as a table for the board, making it go from "not very portable" to "super portable, ez setup" Of course, the primary focus needs to be on making it quieter (the beep definitely has to go), making it faster (it'd be impossible for a blitz rn), and maybe even adding multiple "hands", if possible, to allow faster transitions and a hand to micro-touch (move pieces to the center of their square), etc. Just the thoughts of a chess pleb. It's super cool, I'll keep my eye on it and may even buy it soon XD

This board is not good for a lot of reasons: 1) The pieces like you notice sometimes fall during the movement. 2) The move must be done with a pression on the square 3) The relevation of the movement is not fast 3) Pieces are too small 4) There is no possibility to conect to a pc and use an hardware outside the board! 5) Pieces and board are not very beauty. 6) you can't remove the beep. 7) Is not possible to upgrade the hardware or the pieces and you can't interact without the app. I have the Mephisto Bavaria and is superfast and with no defects but unfortunately was very expensive and they dismessed the improving of the board. Also the DGT can't compare with the Bavaria in terms of use and analisys! They should modify completely the project and sell it to a price that would be 10 times the actual but it will be difficult to earn in this way! Okay so Square off has 4 boards now. This one and 2 others that have auto piece movement, then the roll out PRO that does not have auto piece moves. However I'm in a discussion with them currently because their site claims this one, the GK, is tournament sized and shows the dimensions as 24x20, this may be true including the parking spaces but a chess player needs the size of the game squares not the table it sits on, the NEO, and the SWAP are all the exact same game board size but claim to be not tournament size and their dimensions are 14x14 for the NEO & 19x15 for SWAP. Then the roll out board, the PRO is actually tournament size and says so with a size of 20x18 (close to tourney size anyway). I'm hoping they correct this misleading info
@m0rdresh2 жыл бұрын
They seem to have corrected that, as I recently looked up the Grand Kingdom Set on their website and it clearly shows not being tournament size. I don't think we are going to see a self-moving board in that size, probably would be impracticable/economical due to the robotic arm and magnet requirement to move that size and weight around.

400 $? I don't think that's a lot. What about these absurdly overpriced DGT-Boards? You don't even get a somewhat decent DGT board for 400 dollars and the pieces are not moving by technology. In comparison to DGT boards, this board is rather underpriced, a downright bargain! It's about time the price policy of DGT is coming back down to earth. We need more competition!

I agree. I don't get the remarks about the price. The DGT Centaur for example costs just as much as the Grand Kingdom Set. Not that I want to compare as I like both, but the cost for the Square Off seems on par with what they offer.

Do you need the app to setup every game? Or once you configured a level and a color you can start a game without it?
@GMHuschenbeth6 жыл бұрын
Not quite sure what you mean. You need to start each game through the app.

Probably good at least for practice, with the ai, but you could probably just use an app.

My board is way slower than yours but my board doesnt knock peices over tho probaly cuz i've had mine for 8 months and essentially it gets boring after time and i bellive you had a very nice review! you dressed up nicely, and just something you could maybe make a video about you have already probaly but i'm rated arround 1500 and it's kind of hard to get out because there is so many openings and new end games you will have to learn not to get a worse position and it gets harder to improve i bellive

I bought this game 7 months ago and it's been in the Box sealed just the way I got it and and only because buzz the roommates that I had in the house at the time where I was living baby I didn't trust at the had their issues well now I'm alone in a new apartment And I'm able to play the game and in 1990 I did have a game like this but it had regulation size pieces and as high as it would go as level 3 Well that got boring after a while so I sold it but I knew it was a good idea if they stuck with it and perfected it it would happen and then I caught this on the website so naturally I bought it and my price was just under 500 but you're right it does drag ponds across-the-board and the the computer actually getting messed up Because it loses track of the pieces where they were I have to end the game and start all over in any case I've always loved the game just I'm originally from England so where I was born during the war right after the end of the war and All the war brides and their babies came over here and the Queen Mary and that was our 1st trip our 1st trip but I've been back in port to Britain to see my grandparents and of course all my cousins and my uncles were all chess players and we played and we played personally I loved the game love the game I really do and and when I came back to the States the States in I joined the chess club where I was working but I heard about this check at this just club at Kodak where they had a player from overseas I'm not gonna say where but I considered him a big challenge and I wanted to beat him beat him so are you studied and I studied and I studied for 3 months and I had a headache And my rating at the time was a little over 1800 just like bills and he helped he helped me as a second you know and then I called on one night and I said bill I should bill I think I'm ready I'm in fact I know I'm ready let's go we went to the club the game lasted about 2 and 3/4 hours and I beand I Beta He made a ridiculous a ridiculous move because I had mate and just won he made that move and then I just went down and mate mate bill and I were both shocked what was he thinking But I'm very happy to have this just it's just bored I really am and I know I can overcome the beast's falling over and dragging them across-the-board But thank you for your video Michael!
